I love Maudlin of the Well,who I think were one of the most original bands in music,not just progressive metal.
I would still recommend My Fruit Psychobells,it was the first thing I heard from them and it definitely hooked me.While not quite as good as Bath and Leaving Your Body Map,it is still a very good album,especially for a debut. |

Has Maudlin as much metal as Kayo dot? (And of course that is sarcasm), cause I just cant see the point of having Kayo Dot in prog metal.
And, is Maudlin as ....ehmmm how to put it, "anti-song" as Kayo Dot, or is it more coherent and structural? And of course, this is not a bad thing and I mean it with respect, dont get offended you Kayo Dot fans |

MoW has more metal in their sound than Kayo Dot.And while the song structures of MoW are not exactly conventional,they are not as "free-wheeling" as Kayo Dot's tunes. |

Bought it.
 The mp3's I have are of terrible quality.
In Kayo Dot's website it says to send 10$ to Toby Driver and it appears he lives right next to my brother, so I guess that in my next visit to Boston, I could "pop in" and buy My Fruit.....

I absolutely love MotW, actually they've just stopped growing on me and I've realized the full greatness. Amazing band.
 BTW, I have a question. What's up with the two tracks in the end of Bath with horrible sound quality? Is that the "bonus"?(I bought the same thing Mike linked to on ebay)  |

Yep, Maudlin have a bunch of early demos that they've recorded which are widely unavailable. Toby responded to constant demand from their fanbase for the opportunity to hear them by including what he considered the only remotely worthwhile bits from the demos as bonus tracks on Bath and Leaving Your Body Map's reissued versions. Anyway, Maudlin of the Well are prog-metal's undeniable pinnacle. Kayo Dot is fantastic as well but can't quite reach the same heights as Bath and Leaving Your Body Map. It makes me endlessly happy to see that these guys can now generate get a two page "appreciation" thread, I remember when I first added them to the site virtually nobody had heard of them. |

It was with your strong approval and support of them Bryan that helped grow interest (certainly interested me). Now I think Bath and Leaving Your Body Map (which may be one of my favorite Prog Metal albums ever) are splendid (doesn't even begin to describe it really) albums.
 That and Kayo Dot's rise up on this site might have also been a contributor.

Bryan, pal, I was just getting ready to email you to thank you for the day you first mentioned MotW to me nearly 2 years ago. But then I saw you posted here so I figured thanking you here was as good a place as any. This band has truly changed my life and my appreciation for music. I adore them. And I'm glad that this thread has gotten to two pages! I wasn't sure it would even get past the first when I created it. It's great to know that MotW is as beloved to others as they are to me. |

A fabulous band.
I discovered them on BNR a few years ago and the praises BNR (another Bryan) gives them persuaded me to get it. I was upset when I heard they split, but then came the announcement that Kayo Dot, a new group would be their new incarnation.
And the rest is history...

I have actually ben listening to Maudling of the Well since 2002. I remember ordering Bath and Leaving your Body Map from darksymphonies.com, and they came in about 2 days. Bath is definitely in my top 5 albums of all time, they manage to do so much more than Dream Theater or Symphony X, or any other prog metal I have ever heard. I also had the pleasure of seeing Kayo Dot in a very small club last year in Washington. The stage was not big enough to hold all of the band members; I ended up standing right behind Toby. Although they only played 3 songs, it was a great show, and was actually written up in the Washington Post that weekend! It was hard to tell if the reviewer had a favorable opinion of the show, he was more interested in discussing the avant garde aspect of the music.

Fantastic, refreshing band. The only weak spots are the soloing and singing, but i don't mind the singing, it adds a charm/character and fits with the theme of the music. The soloing i'm not so keen on, but it's no big deal. The rest of the music makes up for it.
I see most people prefer Bath over Leaving Your Body Map. I'm the other way round. Bath is still fantastic though. Besides, i kind of think of them as a double album, since they were written/recorded at the same time and LYBM is a continuation of Bath. |
