I believe the first few Chicaco albums were truly progressive. Which do you think is the most progressive?

Of what you have listed, Chicago III would be the most fitting of the "progressive rock" tag, with its jazz influences and instrumentals. However, don't overlook the first side (first 5 tracks) of Chicago VII. Very jazzy and progressive, though since the second side of the album is their typical (but excellent) pop, the entire album might not be more progressive than their earlier stuff. Having said all this, while Chicago is definitely one of my top 10 bands, it is not at all a progressive band, simply a band that had a few wonderful progressive moments, and made killer pop rock!

I didn't say they were a progressive band; they certainly aren't. They did, however, make progressive albums.

Glad to find another Chicago fan here!

Chicago's discography works in somewhat of a strange way. Over the years they slowly became more of a girly-pop sounding group, but there is one very odd exception. Check out Chicago Seven, this is the one I would have voted for. Though Chicago III, for progressive listeners is a great pick as well.

I'm kind of partial to Chicago II myself:

Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon, Memories of Love Suite, Fancy Colours, 25 or 6 to 4, Wake Up Sunshine, Where Do We Go From Here, Poem for the People.

Not prog (I suppose), but some pretty innovative stuff.

I think Seven is there with 1 to 3 too. And then the increasingly  rare track on later albums that suggested they might still have it if they pulled their fingers out - e.g. Street Player. BTW I said it before, some of the old qualities do get through the crowd pleasing showbiz and hamming on the recent DVD: Chicago & Earth Wind & Fire Live At The Greek Theatre.
