Gramophone? Isn't that a turntable?  Very neat looking device! I like to listen vinyls more than CD's.
I always thought that "gramphones" are like this, used for playing clay discs:

A turntable - yes, of course. I used the word "gramophone" 'cos we call it in Poland that way. And I thought that a turntable was only a part of the device - the plate you put vinyls on...

Well, Tuzvihar, perhaps now you can explain to the younger progheads why some older are talking about 'side-long tracks' and 'side four of The Wall/The Lamb .. 
By the way, last year I bought a new grammophone (after 5 years without) in order to play my vinyl singles by The Sweet, Slade, Mud, Alice Cooper, Status Quo  |

Actually only little handwork is needed. But there's not much prog on clay discs, but some nice classical music luckilly!
Tuzvihar: Have you started to buy vinyls already, or did you have a collection before you got the turntable? Prog vinyls are just great!

That's a DJ turntable. However, I'm not sure about the exact
differences between a DJ turntable and a normal hi-fi turntable. DJ
turntables might be just as good for listening to records... And many
of them look better than hi-fi turntables aswell, especially the
Stanton ones.

DJ turntables have controls like variable speed (other than the obvious 33, 45 and possibly 78), as well as stuff so you can slip the disc around without it breaking. That adds to the cost, so if you spend the same amount on a DJ turntable as a hi-fi one ie will likelily be worse.

They also have very robust cartridges and stylii which allow you to spin the disc backwards without breaking the pickup. Very hardwearing but with an inevitable reduction in quality, albeit a small one.

The point is, DJ turntables often look better than hi-fi turntables, in my opinion.

^Looks good, but it's way out of my budget, and probably Tuzvihar's
aswell. And I still like the look of Stanton DJ turntables better. 
(Assuming we're talking looks now. I don't doubt the far superior sound of the VPI)

Today I got my mom to dig out the old record player. It isn't hi-fi or anything, but it's free so I'm not going to complain. I just need some nice speakers (I use headphones and my current speakers suck) and I should be set. They even have some good stuff on vinyl (Yes and PF mainly) and cleaning equipment. Here is a pic of the one they had (Sony PS-3300)
