Both my parents love him and through them I got acquainted with his music which I learned to love and appreciate. I love his deep, sometimes mumbling narrative voice.
A short trivial story:
I need to ask my mother more details of this, cause there are some loose ends to it, but this is basically what happened. My mom worked in the Israeli embassy in Paris in the 70's. When the October 73' war started, Serge came clandestinely to the embassy and he was received by my mother (the embassy was closed) and talked to her about how much he is worried about this war and he fears for Israel's existence. And he said he felt he had to do something, even is it a small thing, for Israel. So he said he decided to give a donation to Israel and he apparentely gave a large sum of money to the embassy to pass on to Israel (I don't know exactly where) and he wished for it to remain an anonymus donation. When I first heard this, I was surprised, because he never expressed anything to do with his jewish side and especially was not an outsopken defender of Israel.

Quoting myself from donkeys back (the depths one is willing to plummet heh)! Reason is I just got my hands on the always excellent Soleil Zeuhl's reissue of Eskaton 'Fiction' and it has another four tracks from 'Icare', three of which are in the four minute bracket and the other in standard issue 9 minute Eskaton length. Coupled with the other 9 minute track on 4 Visions I'm making this a shade over 35 minutes. Oh yeah! Oh an' ignore my 3 star rating. It's solid gold. Edited by Yukorin - October 31 2006 at 05:46 |

Nothing trivial here avers! Always love hearing stories like this. My ex (who is a few noodles short of a ramen) based her whole position on Middle East conflicts around the fact Serge has a Jewish background |

I have seen this French piece pop up quite regularly on the ol' Zeuhl lists. So I though a little information was needed.
Nyl - Nyl (1975) "Unhappyly it has very little available information on the Nyl, not only in the Internet, but even though in encarte of the COMPACT DISC that compels its legacy (edited for the parisiense stamp Legend Music). Under the auspices of the guitarist Michel Peteau and the baterista Stéphane Rossini, responsible for the majority of the compositions, the band initiated its activities in 1973, participating, as well as as much other formations of underground French then, the MJC (Les Maisons DES Jeunes et of la Culture) and of the autogestionários festivals. In 1975, they had recorded its only record, the Nyl homonym, that stock exchange operator Janick Top (Magma, Heldon) in three bands counts on the participation of célebre, and of the saxofonista Patrice “Free” Quentin (Crium Delirium). Acting in a similar line to the Crium Delirium (despite without the circus lisergia of the band of the Magal brothers), the alternating Nyl between long improvisations in compass of space rock (Nyl - in three versions in the COMPACT DISC -, Alex); inspiration ballads psych folk (with prominence for the gorgeous Ailes d' Or, beyond Abery); exercises free (Jaguar I and II); e good acid rocks (Nyarlathotep - excellent -, Dromadaire Bleu, Dervishes, Ibha) packed by one interplay of strident guitars, low pulsante and vigorous battery. The quality of writing it's not worth a while, over all in last the six bands, registered to the living creature, that suffer with an excess of acute frequencies (thing that particularly annoys me, I confess, over all pq I do not see necessity in “swelling” the content of an album with frankly precarious registers, “to perhaps justify” the duration longest of the digital format…); not obstante, one is about an interesting record, to trustworth register one of the periods most creative of the history of the Gallic rock." The Unameables is quality Faaip. Worth tracking down on vinyl as it has a gorgeous textured gatefold sleeve with a truly enormous Magma symbol inside. Expect the usual printed on receipt paper reissue cd from Musea |

Yeah was talking about Evohe, bit of a typo there. I'm starting to realise what you are talking about, in regard to the holy grail. The track on that unrelease Zeuhl compilation was gold. But as always I will keep on looking. I will let everyone know if I find anything. |

Hey, I've got that album by Nyl or Nil. Mandakeroot's review is pretty accurate in his descriptions.
By the way, which is the correct name ?

I'm pretty sure it is Nyl, even taking into account the NIL on the front cover. All the searches I have done come up with the 'y'. But Nil does entail and nice French Symphonic band.

My bleedin' upgraded Commodore 64 computer is on a right go-slow tonight. She's even managed to initiate the dreaded AppleMac 'spinning-rainbow-of-death' for a record five-plus minutes. Hey Steve Jobs! Guess what I'm buying next. Always thought it was 'Nyl' myself. Presume it was a zeuhl typo by the reissuerz |
