Topic: Anderson & Wakeman in Southend 24/10/06 Posted: October 25 2006 at 07:20 |
These guys could have a career as a comedy duo should they ever tire of the music business (which seems unlikely now after nearly 40 years). They had the crowd in fits of laughter on more than one occasion, and Jon Anderson was unable to start one song for a while as he couldn’t stop laughing. Rick didn’t help matters by playing “The Teddy Bear’s Picnic”!
Rick started it all off with his comments on his bottle of water (“2 million years to create, best before end December 2006”) and throughout the evening proved to be excellent as a stand-up comedian, particularly with his Henry VIII routine.
Ah, but what about the music, I hear you ask? Despite the information on the Cliffs web site and the tickets, there was no backing band and no special guests, just Rick on the grand piano and Jon on acoustic guitar. The music was a mixture of new songs and old Yes classics. Some of the Yes songs worked surprisingly well “unplugged” – Wonderous Stories, Turn of The Century, South Side of the Sky, And You And I, Sweet Dreams, Give Love Each Day - although the reggae version of “Time and a Word” was not quite so successful. The highlight of the evening was a stunning version of “Awaken”. They both decided before the tour that they would attempt the most complex and unlikely song in the Yes canon, but it worked really well. We were then told about their gardening exploits (runner beans, parsnips and other more dubious plants) before an excellent new song unsurprisingly called “The Garden”.
After an interval for “tea and biscuits” (although Rick said the real reason was “prostate”) Jon did a solo spot on the piano, which mainly showed that some of Yes’ lyrics sound (even more) ridiculous in the wrong context (i.e. the opening to “The Revealing Science of God”). Rick’s solo spot got one of the biggest cheers of the night for “The Nursery Rhyme Concerto”. They ended the evening with a few more Yes classics including “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and “Roundabout”.
The whole evening was a very relaxed and informal affair (so relaxed that the guy next to us fell asleep in the second half!) in the company of two giants of prog music. I will admit to occasionally wishing that the rest of Yes would come bounding onto the stage but it was still a very enjoyable evening. What a shame there was an empty seat next to me!
NB – I did overhear the sound engineer saying he was recording all the shows, so there is a possibility of a live CD or DVD!

Sounds like it was a great show, Alan, and I'd have been intrigued to see the unplugged version of Awaken - IMO the best Yes epic, and what's more Rick Wakeman thinks so too! Oh well, I'll enjoy the DVD when/if it comes out.
Splendid review, sir .

Thanks Chris, it sounds like at least a CD could be in the pipeline. Hopefully they'll fit some of Rick's jokes on it as well.

Thank you GE.
I'll share one of Rick's jokes with you. He was talking about Henry VIII and his wives and how he (Rick) was now on his fourth. He told us that, believe it or not, he used to drink a lot back in the 1970s and was spending a lot of money on beer, so he agreed with his wife (of the time) that he would cut out the beer as he was in a bit of financial difficulty then. Anyway, he didn't touch a drop for 3 months, then one day he found a receipt in his wife's purse for £850 worth of make up. He said to her "this isn't fair, I have given up beer so it's only fair that you give up spending so much money on make up". His wife said "but darling, I have to have it, it makes me look beautiful for you". Rick said "but that's what the beer was for".
Boom boom.

Rick is a very funny man. Is it true he does stand up comedy?
Another Rick story: A couple weeks ago he was on XM radio, and he decided to share a story about him, and Cat Stevens. He starts off by saying about ten years ago Cat asked him if he could play some acoustic piano on one of his new songs. Rick agrees and adds a piano into, outro and bridge, the song is then named "Morning has Broken". A couple of months later the album comes out, and the song reaches the number 1 spot on the U.S. charts. Rick goes on and says something like "Thats great right...but I never got payed, or credited on the album," he then waits for an "Ahhhh" from the audience and says "that wasn't forced." After that Rick says that when it came time for Cat to go on tour, he gave him a visit. Rick tells Cat his problem, and Cat says somthing like "Oh, we'll have to do something about that." Cat then asks Rick if he could tell him how to play the piano on the song, and Rick responds by saying "I don't think I remember how to play that."

Another funny Rick story. He was in a restaurant when one of the waiters kept looking at him. He eventually came over and asked Rick if he would autograph some of his albums. Rick said yes, so the waiter rushed home and came back with a load of Richard Clayderman albums!

Nice review Chopper.
I would like to see this show. I hope that they will come here playing for us this side of the pond. I always likedRick Wakeman. When I was in Dover in june 2005 ( I was going on a cruise the next morning), I watched television and I saw Rick on a very special tv probram called " The grumpy old men". Two guys ( Rick and another one) were giving their opinions on several subjects related to modern life and society.
Rick was incredible. We had a good laugh just watching him giving his opinion on several things. He is funny, but also he is what we can called a "Grumpy Old Men". He fitted perfectly this description, but in another way, he seems adorable.
I would really like to see him play live someday ( I saw him with Yes only)

I'm not sure if he's done full blown stand up, but he used to be compere at Jongleur's comedy club in London and, as somebody else has pointed out, he's also made some excellent contributions to Grumpy Old Men (although I think Will Self and Arthur Smith are the best on that show).

Yeah I love 'Grumpy Old Men'. I'm only 18 but I agree with more or less everything they say on that. A worrying trait perhaps?
My favourite from Rick was 'anyone in a hood should be shot on sight. It's simple as that'.
I was going to go to the Cardiff one but the fact it was cancelled at one point turned me off.
Anyone hear the rumour Yes were supposedly touring with Asia next year? Not sure how true that one is...

I did advertise the ticket for sale, but I guess Argentina is a bit of a long way to come for a gig!

Unplugged music and relax concert in small venue seems to be very popular among those musicians. Steve Howe did the same with Martin Taylor; playing guitar in small theaters. I like it that way. It brings to the music another dimension. We can realise this way how much their music is good, even without the drum, bass and synthe etc...

Left it too late to get tickets for the gig nearest to me - High Wycombe, tonight, 31st Oct. And I missed your ad for a ticket at Southend damnit!!
Nice review, sounds a good show, if there's a CD released I'll go for it!
Hope they (meaning Yes) do tour next year, as rumoured.

By the way, has anyone watched the "behind the scenes" of the YesAcoustic DVD in which Rick narrates? Hilarious!
