Do You think Captain Beefheart is considered proto-prog?
I don't think he is. I admire Beefheart and his work with the Magic Band and working with Zappa, but for me he's not Proto-Prog Rock. Is Beefheart proto-prog? |

He isn't. He's RIO/Avant-Prog on this site: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1471

Whatever you call him, he's definitely unique. No one's ever really been on the same page (although I suppose U.S. Maple came close....).

I think RIO/Avant is a very good classification of him. |

When Chris Cutler set up Recommended Records (whose catalogue pretty much defines RIO, given that it was originally set up to distribute the bands who appeared at the RIO festival) he included a 'cultural heritage' section, albums which he and his fellow musicians considered to be seminal influences. These included Zappa's first two, Magma and Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off Baby. In fact, with the possible exception of Faust (reissued by Recommended in the early 8os), it's difficult to think of anyone who's had a bigger influence on avant prog.
So the answer is: yes he is.

No offense to CB fans, but I personally find his music shallow and maybe a little TOO RIO. I only have Trout Mask Replica though so maybe I havn't heard the right stuff...it just comes across as random and schizophrenic, as opposed to something more nuanced ala Zappa.
Zappa, Henry Cow and Fred Frith, Univers Zero, Art Bears, Zorn, etc... do RIO right. |
