Topic: Is Emerson, Lake & Palmer boring? Posted: October 25 2006 at 09:56 |
Okay. I have discussed about this with few of my friends and now i ask your opinion.
What do i mean by "Boring"?
Is their instrumentation boring? You don't like how they play?
Is their sound boring, like if they mix their sound in an non-interresting fashion?
And the big one, are their compositions boring? With all the synths and almost no guitar at all?
So is their musiv boring to listen to?
I vote no. ELP does not play boring music.
(Sorry for using the whole long name, i think it sounds pretty good).

long classical-like songs (Karn Evil) may be boring to some, i admit, but not to me, as i am used to classical music and listen to it on regular basis.

Yes, boring to me. An over-rated band IMO.

ELP are not boring. They inspired so many italian prog bands during the seventies...how could I say their music is boring?
Cold and maybe too much formalistic sometimes, but never boring!

Seeing as I often mix the PA for an ELP tribute band I may be biassed. I'd say no, they are definitely not boring.

By the way. If you want to see Noddy's Puncture they are playing on Saturday night in Rochdale.

Yes, they inspired them to copy the keyboards sections / style, and keep it as a steady component. Say, even I can mimc those short keyboard prhases (¡tun, tun, tun, tun, tuntún!). Ater one hundreed spins, and after their failure at creating something beyond their own cliches, yes, they are boring indeed.

I didn't vote because sometimes ELP are boring, sometimes they aren't.
Strange how they've divided everyone else's opinion!

overall, no, but I do have a grundge against their sometime unciseled material and, in the 90s, against the pseudo-comeback, giving 5-6 live albums of the same material (and only two studio refreshments, the first being okay, but the second being a practical joke).

Oh yes, they are sooo boring.....zzzzzz......songs like: the barbarian, take a pebble, three fates, tarkus, endless enigma, toccata, karn evil 9....pffffff
One of the reasons I like them is the energy and power they have in their music(often a sort of metal-like approach to the music, which is kinda cool I think).
ELP isn't boring........dated perhaps, as a fan i'd say charming(except for that bloody Yamaha GX-1 keyboard ).
But their best compositions are total masterpieces in the progressive rock genre, imo.
(you have to remember that prog as a musical style(approach?) was still in 'embryo state' and ELP was one of the first bands to define that genre, so bravo ELP!)
It's just that ELP had to quit completely after the Works vol.1 album/tour imo(with that album and tour everything was said and done, musically speaking).
Now, neo-progressive that's boring
ps: oh yeah and Emerson, Lake & Palmer sounds pretty cool!

My comment on that was ironic
Take a pebble is one of the best things they've ever done(ever seen the live version from the 'masters from the vaults' dvd?, that's a wonderfull version ).

they are not boring at all.
in fact, I think they are underrated. (IMO Genesis is overrated), Brain Salad Surgery should be in the top ten albums.
