I have Joji Hirota's "The Gate". Quite good, having elements of symphonic classical, ancient Japanese drumming and modern electronic music. Released by PG's Real World label!

- Boredoms (would have to one of my favourite bands at the moment) - Acid Mothers Temple - OOIOO - Haino Keiji - Ruins - Brast Burn - karuna khyal - Wha-ha-ha - Ground Zero (alongside many other Otomo Yoshihide projects) - Taj Mahal Travellers - Sanhedolin - Korekyojinn - Lacrymosa
I'm sure there are many more by they are some I have been interested in.
Also this is probably a good place to ask. Does anybody know anything about the band EPIDEMIC CAUSE? All I know is they are a Japanese trio focusing in the realms of avant-garde. |
never too late.....
Adam, did you finally get some info on Epidemic Cause?

I just bought "Phase Transition" by Japanese band Quaser.
This band was unknown to me before, and I'm not disappointed by this
purchase. Symphonic borderline Jazz-rock/Fusion. Quite interesting
stuff with KC influences but no copy. They sing in Japanese, and
although it's not too bad for my ears, probably they could do
better without vocals. After three listenings I'd give it 3.5
upto 4 stars.

cool... 'foreign' prog should be in it's native language hahahha. Sounds like something I'd like.
Great thread. Looking to get into Japanese prog. Have heard many great things about it.

The Japanese band I've been most impressed with is The Black Mages. For those not aware, they're a prog-metal outfit led by keyboardist Nobuo Uematsu (best known as the composer for the Final Fantasy video game series' music). Sure enough, they play metal covers of Final Fantasy songs. I'm a big fan of the music from Final Fantasy, but by no means is it required to appreciate their stuff. Soaring, very keyboard driven instrumental prog-metal, really good stuff.
I've also heard a bit from Japanese prog/avant-garde black metal band Sigh, who sound like they're from a different planet than the rest of the music world.

There was an edition of a well-known underground magazine over here that was all about Boredoms music, art, and related projects. Their cd's and vinyl alone covered 20 pages...! (Studio Voice...beautiful magazine...)
Have you got the 1st edition box of "VisionCreationNewsun" ? It's really fun...!
