Sorry if this poll is too stupid, but I have a friend who has a
terrarium with ants and he seriously argued that these twee, busy
insects have to be put into a fridge because if they are not, they lose
their copiousness.
As I heard that I was laughing about 10 minutes or something because this was simply one of the most stupid things I have ever heard. I simply can't believe it, but on the other hand I have never had any experiences with ants in my live, so who knows if he was still right (I hope someone who has a terrarium with ants either knows it)... So, what do you guys think? Do ants become more copious when you put them into a fridge for some time? By the way, my friend said that the vegetable cooler would be the best place to store the ants in the fridge... I think he is just off his rocker... And by the way, wouldn't that be cruelty to animals?! P.S.: Please don't ban me for this stupid poll... |

By copious do you mean they have sex more? Because I believe putting them in a fridge will make them frigid...

I believe they become more copious when you take them out of the
fridge, which of course requires putting them in the fridge so they can
be taken out, so the answer is YES, YES, YES!
(I know nothing about ants, nor have I ever heard the word 'copious'). |

After 11 months of reconsidering this question I've come to the conclusion that it depends on the temperature of the fridge and the species of the ants. (I still don't know what 'copious' means, though.)

No more so than using a magnifying glass on them.
Besides they are just insects and cruelty to insects is just fine. I'd like to destroy them all. Of course, then all plant life would die, followed by all animal life on the planet, but hey, it'd be worth it if I didn't have to deal with bugs.

Copious indicates a profoundly large number.
e.g. "I love prog for the copious number of notes in any given song, but much less for the copious number of hot girls who don't show up to prog concerts"

I'm starting to think that you may not be, in fact, a real doctor.

In that case I suppose the amount of ants inside the fridge increases and the amount of ants outside the fridge decreases. |

Unless, of course, the fridge is not on and it is very cold outside the fridge.

I want to revive this thread. Everyone, please share your experiences about putting ants in the fridge to make them more copious.

Well, of course they get more copious in the fridge, because in the cold they tend to snuggle a lot more and everybody knows where that leads to!
But I could be wrong of course! It sure isn't cruelty against animals to put them in the fridge, e.g. for turtles it is a great way to hibernate in a fridge. Just don't put them into the freezer! |

Insects metabolism slows down when their body temperature drops and they become inactive, so I can only assume that it is when you remove them from the fridge they get frisky and start increasing the size of the colony. This possibly mimics the winter/spring cycle within the terrarium and they get more numerous in readiness for the increased food supply in spring. But why would anyone want to purposefully increase the number of ants in this world?
Better to stop them breading than to invest in thousands of tiny ant-traps, which everyone knows are useless because the ant just chews it's leg off and escapes on the remaining five.

If you put them in the fridge first and then in the freezer, you'll get copious crunchy ants.
