A bit off topic, I compiled a list of many French prog acts (about 360-370) many of them not on PA), and I think I will start devoting myself to unravelling that scene which was apparentely huge with many obscure bands, many of whom might fit in this thread.

Have a good everyone,

Assaf

Tongue I definitely know how you are feeling on this one.

They are definitely three essentials from Zeuhl. I know there is a nice double disc of two Vortex albums which is well worth hunting down. I plan on do this myself once I start working again and have some sort of income. It is on one of the big vendors so it should not be too hard to track down, and for a reasonable price. Now here comes the warning, Verto is going to be a b*****d to find, this has not been release on CD as far as I know. If it has someone please tell me. So be prepared to do some searching.

Assaf, that sounds like one hell of a task, but also a lot of fun. Please keep us uptodate on how this is going. As I know I for one would be very interested in what you dig up, no matter which genre we are talking about.

Anyway, talk to you guys later, got to go for now.

Shouldn't be too hard to find on vinyl. Didn't pay too much for my copy as I remember. If I only knew how to transfer vinyl to digital there would be a copy winging its way across the Pacific as we speak

DÜN

SOLEIL ATREIDES presents...

"Eros"

1976 saw the birth of the band VEGETALINE BOUFIOL in Nantes (western France). Around guitar player François TEILLARD were Laurent BERTAUD on drums, Jacques BRETONNIERE on piano, Michel BLANCART on bass and Pascal VANDENBULCKE on flute who, at the time, was completing his studies at the regional academy of music.

In 1978 the band changed its name to become KAN-DAAR. They then set to play covers of the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA along with the first compositions of the band. KAN-DAAR's influences were the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA of course, but also ZAPPA and first and foremost MAGMA which was like a beacon crystallising the longings and ravings of the group. Laurent was also a great HENRY COW fan and soon managed to convey his passion to the rest of the band.

Philippe PORTEJOIE then joined on sax, along with Thierry TRANCHANT who took Michel's place on bass. The band gave a few concerts around Nantes. Jean GEERAERTS took over from François on guitar while Bruno SABATHE replaced Jacques on piano.

The new band then decided to change its name again to DUNE which soon would be altered to a definitive DÜN. At the time Jean and Pascal were immersed in the world of Frank HERBERT's novel and from this world also arose such number titles as " ARRAKIS " and " L'EPICE " , which had been composed at the time of KAN-DAAR. The band, now stable, gave around 40 concerts between 1978 and 1981, all in the Nantes area. Their fame never stretched beyond the limits of the region and attendance to concerts (generally organised by the band) was anything from 5 to 300 people.

DÜN opened for MAGMA in Douarnenez before appearing at the Carquefou festival in 1979 alongside rock bands such as TELEPHONE or LITTLE BOB STORY, but also bands closer to their musical approach such as ART ZOYD and ETRON FOU LELOUBLAN. DÜN and ETRON FOU LELOUBLAN later remained in touch and developed close ties and for a while there was even talk of DÜN joining ROCK IN OPPOSITION, the collective launched by HENRY COW. That never happened, due to neglect and laziness.

In 1980, Philippe (sax) left while Alain TERMOL joined on percussion. There were more local concerts until 1981 when it was decided that it was time to record an LP. DÜN was recommended Etienne CONOD's SUNRISE recording studio in Kirchberg, Switzerland, by UNIVERS ZERO who had recorded 2 LPs there : " HERESIE " in 1979 and " CEUX DU DEHORS " in 1980. The recording of the LP was totally financed by the band and so was the pressing. There was never any time spent looking for a record company. Recording went on smoothly in excellent conditions and 1,000 copies of the LP " EROS " were made available around summer 1981. The band sold the record after gigs without looking for a national or even regional distribution.

On stage, Pascal played a totally new and original instrument, the gruyèrophone, also known as swisscheesophone, which he used to describe to the audience as "a wind instrument belonging to the hunting horn family, with a tuba mouthpiece and a square-shaped bell into which small bits of swiss cheese are introduced. The technique is not unlike that of the bagpipe. When the player is tired of blowing the instrument, the small holes in the swiss cheese then burst, taking over from the performer and allowing him to catch his breath".

In 1982, DÜN's line-up changed once more. Alain TERMOL left and so did Thierry who was replaced on bass by Christian MEILLER. Christian DUPONT joined on sax. The musical colour then changed, moving closer to jazz than the previous band had and opening a large space for improvisation, contrasting with the very written approach of former days. This line-up lasted for about a year and gave a few concerts before the 1983 split.

In 1984, Pascal VANDENBULCKE and Jean GEERAERTS started NEVROSE SPIRITUALS, a band playing latin jazz. They gave a few concerts before separating, Jean having decided to move to the USA in order to perfect his guitar playing at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Pascal went on playing jazz through the eighties and recorded a few albums with Jean-Luc CHEVALIER (ex-MAGMA), Marc ELLIARD and Popof CHEVALIER. Gilles MOINARD, soundman for DÜN, joined ETRON FOU in 1983 and remained with them until the last days of the band.

In 1992, a local initiative prompted several Nantes bands to reform : DÜN, but also rock groups such as TEQUILA and DANGER. They all performed for one concert at the Reze MJC in Nantes'suburbs. The band on this occasion was that of the LP, and this was the last time the name DÜN was used.

With the CD re-release have been added the first demo versions of "EROS" and " ARRAKIS" recorded in 1978 when the band was still known as DUNE and had Philippe PORTEJOIE on sax, an instrument which was absent on the Kirchberg record ing sessions. Also added is a demo of "BITONIO" recorded in 1979 in Bois Tharon. Those versions are respectively 3 and 2 years anterior to the LP and are significantly different from those which would be released later. At the end of the CD, an unreleased bonus track "ACOUSTIC FREMEN". This is a number which used to be played around the middle of gigs and acted as an acoustic break. The recording is from 1978 and features J. GEERAERTS, P. VANDENBULCKE and P. PORTEJOIE.

Pascal VANDENBULCKE
- Avec JL et J. CHEVALIER, M. ELIARD, CRYONIC 3013 (1985)
- " " " " " , CRYONIC 3035 (1987)
- Avec le groupe PULSE : Mosa•que , Auto-production CD (1996)
- " " " : Souffle d'Žbne, Label Ouest ND 215 (1998)
Jean GEERAERTS
- Transit zone, RPM 007 (1986)

Anyone heard their solo efforts?

ARCHAÏA

Biography

ARCHAÏA was formed during fall '76 by 2 musicians, both being fans of MAGMA : Pierrick LE BRAS and Michel MUNIER. They had played before with various rock bands but were disappointed by the lack of creativity. They were both looking for a band that will play something different, close to the path MAGMA had opened, but not similar.: Their aim was to play music with only percussions, no drums, and with full use of the guitar, something MAGMA never did.

Soon Philippe BERSAN joined on vocals and percussions. Trying to get the attention of a major company, they decided to record an LP. In august 1977, it was ready, waiting for a label. A friend, Dominique CALMEL, got them a deal with CHORAVOX, a small independant label that later appeared to be the reference label for military brass / bugle bands !!! Predictably, the LP sold very little (few hundreds), almost nothing by the label; sales being done by the band after the concerts.

The music is dark, propelled by M.MUNIER's pulsating bass and P. BERSAN's pagan vocals. Above is the vitriolic fuzz guitar of P.LE BRAS. All being together into very constructed tracks. Their roots grew in the J. TOP sound, not the C. VANDER one, and their own visions did the rest. Some compare their music to MAGMA circa UDU Wüdü , others to progressive bands like ARACHNOID, KING CRIMSON circa RED or HELDON circa Interface. In fact, ARCHAÏA was unique and is probably still today, 20 years later.

In 1978, ARCHAÏA toured, with drummer Patrick RENARD ( see tracks 10 and 11 of the CD ), but as no major company showed interest, the band was dissolved. Before that, during 1978, enough material was recorded for a potential second LP, this time with a drummer. Unfortunately in the early 80's Pierrick LE BRAS sold the tapes in a flea market and they have never surfaced since then. As the band did not keep any copies, they are probably lost forever.

Michel MUNIER, joined the more progressive band GRIME (CD reissue available on MUSEA, Michel plays on the bonus tracks) which had been formed by ex-ASIA MINOR musicians, before leaving the music scene.

Through the years, the reputation of the LP grew among amateurs of ZEUHL but also of AVANT-GARDE and ELECTRONICS. It even gained a legendary status. A reissue was long awaited. The LP was quoted by NURSE WITH WOUND on their 1979 list as one of their favourite recordings. This is a masterpiece of the French progressive / Avant-Garde scene. Nowdays at collectors fairs, the LP is changing hands for about 2000 FF ( over US $ 300 ).

Epos - Ilia

Comments:
Every once in a while, I come across a prog band that is so unique that when it comes time to review I get a bit nervous. This is the case with Epos from St. Petersburg. Ilia, recorded in 1988, is performed by 4 vocalists(2 female and 2 male), 2 violinists, a cello player, a bassist, synth player, and a drummer. The album consists of 4 long tracks that link together to form a continuous 35-minute epic. The 4 sections feature music influenced by traditional Russian folk music. The emphasis here is on vocals rather than on instruments. Vocal sections tend to be done solo(both female and male), accappella, and in unison(choir). When the female singer solos, I'm reminded of old Eastern European laments. The mood is sad, and dark. She is usually followed by a violin theme that reappears during the course of the album. The accappella sections are more influenced by the Russian church chanting tradition. Fortunately, those sections never come off as too religious. Some of the male vocals remind me of Magma. Of course, it's a known fact that Christian Vander borrowed heavily from Hungarian and Russian folk music, so Epos were probably influenced by traditional Russian folk rather than Zeuhl. Whether you will enjoy this album really depends on how much you like vocals, and European folk music(especially from Eastern and Northern Europe). Fans of Magma's Mekanïk Kommandöh will love Epos, but if you're not a fan of Magma, I recommend listening to this album a few times before rating it, because it is quite unique. The open-minded listener, though, will be rewarded.

Compositions: 10/10
Vocals(in Russian): 9/10
Recording Quality: 9/10

From the sounds of that review I'm wishing I had heard of this one. Zeuhl from Russia, now that is something that has gotten me intreged. I was actually in St Perterburg not long ago, and noticed there record stores were quite farmiliar with the old prog (though the language barrier was a little bit of a problem). Accidently walked out wtih 20 albums from one store. If only I had heard some word on the band a little earlier I would have seen what I could have dug up. Tell us if you find any samples in the near future. Also with the conncetions to the Russia Folk, I think this might to similar with the band Olivie Mess, they have some very interesting interludes of Folk sprikled through the Crimson-esque Zeuhl passages.

I know there was some interest in this album, so I just though some people might be interested. Paga's 1985 album is on ebay at the moment.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/RARE-Bernard-Paganotti-PAGA-Excellent-LP-ZEUHL_W0QQitemZ170041532015QQihZ007QQcategoryZ306QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

This is a little more information the seller had about the album:

Hard to find 1985 PAGA Bernard Paganoti produced by Cream Records in OUTSTANDING near mint condition...I found the following review on the internet:

In Magma terms, Bernard Paganotti is the quintessential Gorgo: "air" bassist. This, the debut album of what would become his band Paga, is full of Paganotti's smooth, upper-register bass playing. While the ideas contained in this album stem fundamentally from the jazzier side of zeuhl (a la Weidorje, and not surprisingly, given that both Paganotti and keyboardist Gauthier were members on that band's only album), Paganotti's bass playing is clearly the focus of everything, and his style ranges from funk to jazz to the ominous ostinatos distinctive to zeuhl. Indeed, his high tone and melodic playing remind more of Jaco Pastorius than, say, Jannik Top.

Combine Paganotti's accessible playing with a wide-open, jazzy piano style and accented English vocals (Paganotti himself sings, from what I can tell, rather horrific lyrics; for successive Paga albums Klaus Blasquiz would take over the vocal duties), and you might be afraid that this album could lean way too far towards lite-fusion or something. But this is no fuzak album: there's still enough fury in the rhythm section, enough of that oppressive repetition, and just enough of a touch of distorted guitar mixed in to always keep any listener on his toes. While "Talk Back" and "Show Town" sometimes veer uncomfortably close to cheesy smoothness, "Mitchinoku" (which has vocals, mercifully, not in English) is a killer, with electric guitar and trumpets accenting the insistent beat to great effect, and with Paganotti's bass taking on a dirtier, earthier tone.

The real epic is "Une Parcelle D'Urantia", though, which is one of the most engaging jazzy-zeuhl pieces I've yet heard. It starts with a relatively quiet bass ostinato overlaid by wordless female vocals, before the drums kick in and Paganotti starts wringing those earthy yet distinctively high notes out of his bass. A threatening piano motive eggs on the piece, and vocals and trumpet offer welcome embellishments, but throughout it's Paganotti's bass that pushes everything along, hammering out short melodies over and over before switching over to a new theme. Two-thirds of the way through, the drums become suddenly martial, and the piece gets all Present-like, somewhat more minimalistic, before marching to a dramatic conclusion returning to themes touched on earlier.

This album has obvious appeal to zeuhl-heads and fans of virtuosic, show-offy bassists. Paganotti's performance here is commanding, diverse, and fun, and the rest of his band are no slackers either. The album has its rough spots, its brushes with lite-fusion and its forgettable lyrics, but it's so much fun that none of its faults are fatal.

What's the name of your band Faaip? I hope you are applying extensive usage of the 'Heavy Metal Umlaut' or 'Rock Dots'
