I start the October additions with the last Harold Rubin album still missing on my site. From now on his entire, and of course outstanding output is available for the world to enjoy.

RUBIN, HAROLD ~ 2`S + A QUIET PLACE FOR MR. K.K.
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 2000 - 2001 Released: 2001
This album marked Harold Rubin return to active recording, after almost four years of silence. With the help of his old friend from Zaviot Mark Smulian, who owns a small recording studio (called Digihipi), Harold recorded a series of three independently produced albums between 2000 and 2002, of which this is the first one. These three albums portray his extraordinary talents and visionary music at its best and are a wonderful document of his career as well as the local improvised music scene in Israel. The album includes 14 compositions, which are divided into two separate parts. The first part (2's) is a series of duets with drummer Hagai Fershtman, where Harold plays clarinet and recites three of his superb poems, which are an integral part of the creation. The second part (A Quiet Place For Mr. K.K.) is a beautiful suite dedicated to King Kong and performed as a trio with bass player Eran Borovich. Please note that this suite gets another treatment on the third album in this
 series, this time as a solo piece. This is wonderful music, beyond description and beyond analysis - it should be heard and enjoyed and inspire.

The two new additions todday mark the start of two new series of recently released remasters.

First the last 4 Jethro Tull remasters of the Chrysalis albums from the 1990s.

Then the excellent 8 Peter Hammill remasters of the Charisma albums.

So here we go:

JETHRO TULL ~ A LITTLE LIGHT MUSIC
CHRYSALIS 370978 (Barcode: 094637097823) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1992 Released: 2006
A live album documenting JT's May 1992 European tour, including Israel. The band was a quartet at the time and included Ian Anderson, Martin Barre (guitar) and two ex-Fairport Convention members Dave Pegg (bass) and David Mattacks (drums). This superb line-up played a semi-acoustic set with great acoustic arrangements of old favorites, which were originally much rockier. The tour had a very special atmosphere, which is captured in all its splendor on this album, which was the first JT live recording in 14 years, since Bursting Out from 1978. The band might have been mellower a bit, but the music is as beautiful as ever and JT fans should enjoy this immensely.

HAMMILL, PETER ~ CHAMELEON IN THE SHADOW OF THE NIGHT
VIRGIN 370435 (Barcode: 094637043523) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1973 - 1978 Released: 2006
2nd album by VDGG leader, who maintained a remarkable solo career in parallel to his work with the band. Although accompanied by his VDGG mates, his solo albums were quite different in sound and atmosphere from the band's albums. Hammill is much more personal and expressive, with song lyrics being poetic and much more complex in nature. His vocal talents come to full exposure here and the atmosphere is passionate and bleak. The album is considered to be one of his strongest efforts and is often referred to as a concept album about old age, although formally never described as such. Definitely a must for all VDGG and Hammill fans.

Two more Peter Hammill remasters added today:

HAMMILL, PETER ~ THE SILENT CORNER AND THE EMPTY STAGE
VIRGIN 370511 (Barcode: 094637051122) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1973 - 1978 Released: 2006
3rd album by VDGG leader and one of his best early albums, where he eventually finds his identity away from his band, although the band members continue to accompany him here again. The complex and deeply poetic lyrics require attentive listening and firmly place Hammill in the creative avant-garde, far away from the trivial dribble so often used as lyrics by less ambitious artists. Hammill's vocal performances are electrifying and suit perfectly his convolute texts. Although often criticized a self-indulgent, this is timeless Art, worthy of repeated listening and admiration. A definite must to all VDGG and Hammill fans.

HAMMILL, PETER ~ NADIR`S BIG CHANCE
VIRGIN 370513 (Barcode: 094637051320) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006
5th album by VDGG leader, where he takes a bold move by dramatically changing his musical approach and trying to create a more straightforward rock music. Influenced by the early Punk movement, Hammill demonstrates a deliberate sloppy approach to the instrumentation, creating a noisy and jarring effect. He assumes the character of Rikki Nadir, a garage rocker, and treats the music and his vocals with vengeance, with the listener being unable to comprehend the lyrics properly. Although shocking at the time of its release, in retrospect the album shows simply another, more spontaneous side of Hammill's many talents and the album remains an important document of his career.

Yesterday we had to put our dog to sleep. He was with us for 17 years - a remarkable longevity for a dog - and of course was treated as a full member of our family. We loved him deeply and seeing him suffering in the last few days was anguishing. Only people who have pets can understand the depth of our grief.

Two great new additions today:

QUIDAM ~ QUIDAM
ROCK SYMPHONY 070 (Barcode: 7898217280703) ~ POLAND ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1995 - 1996 Released: 1996
1st album by the Polish Prog group Quidam, which took the Prog world by surprise when it hit the Western world. In retrospect this is definitely one of the best Prog albums released in the 1990s and surely one of the strongest Prog debuts ever. Quidam has all the elements of a great group: superb writers, excellent instrumentalists and a divine female vocalist with an angelic voice of the caliber of Annie Haslam - Emilia Derkowska. The band is deeply rooted in the Prog tradition, especially in the Genesis dramatics, but they take the best of the tradition only as a backbone of their music, developing it far beyond the cliches and building exceptionally well developed and masterly executed songs. The delicate balance between acoustic (flute, viola) and electric (keyboards and guitar) instruments is enchanting and extremely effective. The choice to stick to Polish lyrics is a wise one, as the vocalist certainly can express herself better in her native tongue, rather than use English (as they tried later on). This is a masterpiece in every respect and every single second of this album is absolutely perfect. No serious Prog collection can be complete without this album.

CARMEN ~ FANDANGOS IN SPACE / DANCING ON A COLD WIND
ANGEL AIR 229 (Barcode: 5055011702295) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1973 - 1974 Released: 2006
One of the most eagerly awaited reissues ever of the first two albums released by the US / UK Prog group Carmen, which were amongst the most sought after albums among Prog collectors for almost 30 years. Carmen originated in the US and was a brainchild of David and Angela Allen, who took their Flamenco roots and mixed them with rock. In 1973 the band moved to UK, which was more open to their unusual musical direction. The legendary Tony Visconti produced their first two albums. In spite of the initial high interest in the band somehow things eventually did not work out and after recording one more album they disbanded and disappeared from the scene. The albums remain as an important legacy of the period, especially in view of the fact that they are one of the first attempts to combine wold music (in this case Flamenco) with rock elements, which they certainly did with great taste and talent.

Two brilliant Fusion albums added today:

PONTY, JEAN-LUC ~ AURORA

Recorded: 1975 Released: 2006
The extraordinary talents of the French violinist Jean-Luc Ponty stretch over a magnificent career, which started in the 1960s and continues to this very day. His impact on the role of violin in modern music (jazz & fusion) is unparalleled and his compositional skills are equally impressive. The most important aspect of his contribution to music is his ability to mix his European lyricism with American rhythmic patterns, creating a unique amalgam of contemporary sound. Since the late 1960s Ponty was active on the US scene as member of Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention and then John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, where he contributed to the creation of the definitive Jazz-Rock Fusion foundations. While still a member of Mahavishnu Orchestra (1975) Ponty formed his own group and started recording a long series of brilliant albums for the Atlantic label, of which this is the 2nd. With the help of brilliant musicians like Partice Rushen on keyboards and Tom Fowler on bass (ex-Zappa) Ponty managed to give birth to a perfect Fusion album, which is as relevant today as it was on the day of its creation. He wrote all the music, which includes some of the most memorable melodies the genre was blessed with. The performances are also perfect in every respect and all in all this is one of Fusion's cornerstones and an absolute must.

PONTY, JEAN-LUC ~ INDIVIDUAL CHOICE
WOUNDED BIRD 8098 (Barcode: 664140809826) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1983 Released: 2006
Ponty's 10th album for Atlantic, which marks a radical change in his approach to music, expressed mainly in his extensive use of electronic sounds (as opposed to his earlier use of acoustic or electric violin). Using a complex array of synthesizers and other devices Ponty creates sonic vistas of great beauty and depth. Mind you the Fusion spirit is still very much there and no danger whatsoever of New Age senseless monotony - this is highly spirited music of great value. Although Ponty is by far the main performer, he does use a few supporting musicians like old buddy George Duke on mini-moog or Alan Holdsworth on guitar. As usual Ponty wrote all the music presented here and again he managed to come up with some formidable melodies, which lost none of their charm over the years. A must for all JLP fans and people with taste.

WOUNDED BIRD 8185 (Barcode: 664140818521) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1984 Released: 2006
11th album for Atlantic and a conceptual follow up to its predecessor. This is essentially another solo effort with Ponty creating layers of sound using various synthesizers and then soloing and improvising on top. Chick Corea guests on two tunes and George Benson on another one, but the album is perhaps the most personal and intimate affair Ponty recorded at that period. The music, as usual all written by him, bears the distinct qualities of Ponty's lyricism and European serenity, but remains focused and fascinating. Definitely a gentler side of Fusion, recommended to attentive listeners. JLP fans will of course love this to bits.

PONTY, JEAN-LUC ~ FABLES
WOUNDED BIRD 8276 (Barcode: 664140827622) ~ FRANCE ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1985 Released: 2006
12th and last album for Atlantic, at least for a while, as he returned to record for the label again a decade later. Ponty returns to the group format, this time as quartet with the excellent Scott Henderson on guitar. With a full rhythm section behind him the music is closer to the usual Fusion form, but the synthesizer layers are still present, created by Henderson using the guitar-synthesizer. A great set of melodies, all by Ponty of course, and some fiery performances make this another addition to his outstanding legacy, which is cherished by his numerous fans, yours truly included.

Two suberb Al Di Meola albums added today:

DI MEOLA, AL ~ HEART OF THE IMMIGRANTS
WOUNDED BIRD 9052 (Barcode: 664140905221) ~ USA ~ Jazz-World Fusion
Recorded: 1993 Released: 2005
Al Di Meola's amazing talents as composer and guitarist have been with us since the early 1970s, when he captured the world's attention as the guitarist of Return To Forever. After leaving RTF in late 1976 Di Meola started to record a series of solo albums, alternating between acoustic and electric guitar. The first years of his solo career were dedicated to the Fusion genre, but gradually he incorporated many other musical elements in his work, such as classical and world music. He also cooperated with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia in a series of acoustic guitar trio recordings, which rank amongst the most revered albums of such type. This beautiful album presents Al's on acoustic guitar with a group called "World Sinfonia", playing superb instrumental music influenced by world music elements, the Argentinean tango in particular. In fact this is a second album in which Di Meola pays tribute to the Argentinean genius Astor Piazzolla. Although only four of the included tracks were composed by Piazzolla, the rest of the music, composed by Di Meola, is close in spirit to the Master's legacy. The bandeneon virtuoso Dino Saluzzi is another world famous group member taking part in these recordings and his contribution help immensely to create the authentic tango atmosphere. The entire album is a masterpiece of musical creation, exciting, emotional and incredibly beautiful all the way through. One would have to be completely deaf to stay indifferent to this enchanting music.

DI MEOLA, AL ~ ORANGE AND BLUE
WOUNDED BIRD 9197 (Barcode: 664140919723) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1994 Released: 2005
Although concentration mostly on acoustic projects, Al Di Meola's love for the electric guitar remains intact, as does his ability to use it. This incredible record brings Di Meola back to his familiar Fusion / Jazz environment and with the help of some of the best musicians on the scene at the time (Peter Erskine / Steve Gadd - drums, Marc Johnson - bass and many others including the Israeli singer Noa and Greek superstar George Dalaras) he produces a highly spirited album. The music, composed almost entirely by Di Meola, is of the highest quality, mixing superbly Fusion, Jazz and World elements. The guitar parts are elegant and dazzling, as always and the entire crew follows the leader supplying sympathetic support, which compliments his playing with excellence. In short this is one of those albums that never let you down and repeated listening presents no danger of boredom whatsoever. Highly recommended!

It is the Blood, Sweat & Tears Weekend apparently ;) with the reissues of their sadly forgotten material now available again, which brings me a great pleasure as I love this band to bits. Here are the first two of them:

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ NEW BLOOD
WOUNDED BIRD 1780 (Barcode: 664140178021) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1972 Released: 2005
5th album by US Jazz-Rock icons, which marks the departure of lead singer David Clayton-Thomas (replaced by Jerry Fisher) and a period of frequent personnel changes in the group. In spite of the negative (to say the least) critics and dwindling sales, BS&T were till a superb group, which was completely unparalleled in their ability to mix rock rhythms with intricate jazzy arrangements and deliver time after time some uplifting and spirited performances. Fisher handles the vocals very well and although his vocal abilities lack the magic of David's timbre, he handles the songs with taste and feeling. Swedish guitarist Georg Wadenius adds a rockier dimension and the brass players kick ass as usual. Call me a sucker, but I just love this stuff. Since Columbia lacked the brains (and balls) to reissue this stuff, I am grateful to Wounded Bird for bringing this superb music back to life and circulation. It has not dated a bit and still gives me the thrills, and I hope others can rejoice as
 well.

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ NO SWEAT
WOUNDED BIRD 2180 (Barcode: 664140218024) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1973 Released: 2005
6th album by BS&T, who continued to produce splendid recordings in spite of negative reception by the critics and poor album sales. Jerry Fisher becomes even better integrated with the players and continues the role of the lead singer, with the instrumentalists delivering some great solos. The entire feel of the album is slightly more jazzy than usual, but the formula and balance of Jazz-Rock remain well preserved. It is a great pity that this great music had to wait so long to be available again, but matters is that now we can enjoy it again. Surely every BS&T fan will want to lay his hands on this one.

The BS&T weekend continues with two more additions of their magnificent reissued albums:

Recorded: 1974 Released: 2005
7th album by BS&T, which marks more personnel changes and for the first time also presence of guests like the wonderful Arnold Lawrence on sax and Brazilian percussionist Dom Um Romao among others. The band manages to produce a surprisingly strong set of songs (regardless of the unfair criticism it was continuously under), especially the lengthy suite on the B-side of the LP. Great arrangements, rock solid performances and some outstanding solos make this an album worth rediscovery, especially after so many years it was nowhere to be found. Definitely a must for all BS&T fans.

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ NEW CITY
WOUNDED BIRD 3484 (Barcode: 664140348424) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1975 Released: 2005
8th album by BS&T, which marks the triumphant return of David Clayton-Thomas as the lead singer, following his failure to launch a successful solo career. David's extraordinary and powerful voice was always the ideal counterpart to the band's sound and his return brings the band instantly to the level of former grandeur. His ability to sing ballads and bluesy rockers with the same level of confidence uplifts the band's overall confidence significantly and as a result this album sound every bit as strong as the earlier ones David took part in. To me the album sounds as great today as it did when I first heard it over 30 years ago and it is a godsend to have it available again. If you like the first four BS&T albums, you must have this one as well.

The last of the BS&T reissues added today as well as the last Mahavishnu Orchestra album missing on my site:

BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS ~ MORE THAN EVER
WOUNDED BIRD 4233 (Barcode: 664140423329) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1976 Released: 2003
9th album by BS&T, which was the last studio album they recorded for Columbia (the label released some live recordings years later). The title is quite ominous, as this is their best effort of the later years, every bit as strong as the early albums and blessed with the same characteristics - incredible vocals, clever arrangements, superb playing and great tunes. Unfortunately for the band their fate was sealed by that time and soon after they were no more. Although David Clayton-Thomas carries the BS&T name to this very day and some albums were recorded in the last 30 years, the original 9 Columbia albums are their true legacy to be remembered and cherished for eternity. They brought me many happy moments in the years that passed and I hope some of you will experience the same with this music.

MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA ~ MAHAVISHNU
WOUNDED BIRD 5190 (Barcode: 664140519022) ~ UK ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1984 Released: 2002
7th album by MO, recorded almost 6 years after the last album recorded by MO Mk. III (which means this was MO Mk. IV). In the years that passed between these two incarnations of MO John McLaughlin recorded several superb solo album as well as trio albums with Al Di Meola & Pace De Lucia and of course led the Shakti World-Fusion ensemble - a truly astonishing body of music. The reincarnation of MO served as a project to take another look at the Fusion genre and reflect the changes that the genre went through. McLaughlin selected some of the best Fusion players for his group, with veteran Billy Cobham on drums, Swedish bass player Jonas Hellborg (with whom he recorded several duo and trio albums later), and two excellent representatives of the second generation of US Fusion players: Bill Evans (the other Bill Evans) on sax and Mitchell Forman on keyboards. The music on this album is very different from what the first six MO albums presented. It is much more laid-back, relaxed, serene and cerebral. McLaughlin plays with layers of electronic sounds produced by his guitar synthesizer and Forman's keyboards, with plenty of space for Evans to solo. The rhythm section is also much looser and provides just the right setting for this music. If you are just into the Fusion pyrotechnics as displayed on the early MO albums, this one will be a disappointment, but if you are into great music, you will truly appreciate this one. The fact that Atlantic never reissued this album proves how blind and deaf the Majors are and I am grateful to Terry from Wounded Bird to bring this superb music back to life.

Two very different albums by two very different drummers added today:

WHITE, LENNY ~ ATTITUDE
WOUNDED BIRD 232 (Barcode: 664140023222) ~ USA ~ Jazz-Rock Fusion
Recorded: 1983 Released: 2005
6th album by one of the most versatile US drummers, who played in such different settings as Miles Davis (late 1960s), Return To Forever (mid 1970s) and a myriad of projects spanning everything between mainstream jazz, fusion and funk in later years. His early solo projects were all oriented towards Fusion, but he continuously moved from Fusion towards Funk / Soul, incorporating more vocals and commercial arrangements. Of course this does not mean that his music was bad, as it never was and a player of caliber had always something to offer. This album, although characterized by a commercial sound, presents some high quality Funk music with truly excellent rhythmic approach. The presence of the legendary bass player Marcus Miller turns this into a classic Funk that generation of players studied later on. Definitely on the lighter side of things, but still a damn good listen.

BAKER, GINGER ~ FALLING OFF THE ROOF
WOUNDED BIRD 2900 (Barcode: 664140290020) ~ UK ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1996 Released: 2006
2nd album by the Ginger Baker trio, which includes two jazz giants: Bill Frisell on guitar and Charlie Haden on bass. Baker is of course mostly known as a rock superstar for his role in the legendary Cream (also a drums / bass / guitar trio), but since the 1990s he returned to active duty as a jazz drummer, with a variety of projects in the jazz realm, this trio being one of them. Of course Baker always was a jazz drummer, long before he played for rock audiences. His work with the Graham Bond Organization in the early / mid 1960s is just one of the manifestations of his jazz background, but it even goes far back to the 1950s UK trad bands. Baker was always one of the most original drummers and generations of drummers studied his every beat. He is heavily influenced by African rhythms and he played and studied African percussion for many years. All this adds up to make him a most atypical jazz drummer, immediately distinguishable from any of his peers. The sound and the music are quite different from most guitar trios, to some extent due to Baker's unusual approach to drums, but also due to the choice of the material. Only two standards (by Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker) are present, all the rest of the music was penned by the trio members. The level is of course none less than exceptional, only to be expected from such distinguished players. This is a very interesting and different jazz album, worthy of investigation.

ELLIS, DON ~ AT FILLMORE
WOUNDED BIRD 3024 (Barcode: 664140302426) ~ USA ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1970 Released: 2005
For just about a decade (the Golden Decade as a matter of fact 1965-1975) trumpeter Don Ellis led one of the most sensational jazz Big Bands in history. A visionary musician, composer, arranger and bandleader, Ellis took the Big Band vehicle places it never went before and probably was never intended to go beforehand. His Big Band was unusual in every respect, as it included an extended brass section, rhythm section with two or even three drummers and bass players, a string section and a score of electronic devices like the ring modulator. The sound of the band in full swing was overwhelming and breathtaking, especially when it performed some of the more wacky music with strange time signatures like 5/4 or 15/16. Ellis was open to musical influences from all over the globe and when the brilliant Bulgarian pianist Milcho Leviev joined the band soon after arriving in the US, the Balkan rhythmic patters soon became also part of the regular repertoire. Ellis suffered a heart attack in
 the mid 1970s and died untimely in 1978, a great loss to the world of jazz and music in general. This album presents the Don Ellis Big Band at its peak, recorded in 1970 at the Fillmore West. A superb set of compositions and arrangements suit the abilities of the players perfectly and this music is so powerful and sophisticated that no serious jazz lover should ever consider ignoring it. A few words about the Fillmore: Fillmore's (East and West) owner Bill Graham was a man of great musical taste and open mind. He booked some of the most popular acts of the time as well as some of the most obscure ones and what's even more important he disregarded genres completely, giving Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix the same amount of respect and hospitality. We should cherish his memory for organizing so many of the momentous and historically important concerts at his venues, many of which turned out to be recorded for posterity.

Another live recording of the superb Don Ellis Big Band, just a year after the momentous Fillmore show. The band went through some important changes in that year, with the Bulgarian pianist Milcho Leviev joining the ranks of the players and the addition of the string quartet to the band's permanent personnel. Ellis wrote himself most of the material for this album, with arrangements done by some of the band members. The unusual rhythmic patterns are strongly present here with Leviev introducing the mesmerizing Balkan timing. This is Big Band music at its best: fresh, challenging and always full of surprising and often humorous moments. This stuff is beyond recommendations, just grab it and let the tears of joy fill your eyes!

ELLIS, DON ~ CONNECTION
WOUNDED BIRD 1766 (Barcode: 664140176621) ~ USA ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1972 Released: 2005
This album is quite different from the extraordinary Don Ellis Big Band live albums. Recorded in studio it enables (and produced by no other than the legendary Teo Macero of Miles Davis fame) Ellis to emphasize the more intricate arranging tricks (his own and some guest arrangers like Dick Halligan - ex-BS&T), which are virtually impossible to perform live. The album includes eleven shorter tunes, mostly Ellis unusual (and often humorous) treatment of jazz, pop and even Prog songs (Roundabout by Yes and Conquistador by Procol Harum). Exploiting the exceptional skills of his band members, which include the brilliant pianist Milcho Leviev, Ellis creates a charming collection of tunes, which lost nothing of its originality and interest over the years and remains a classic Big Band album. The album also includes the theme Ellis wrote for the classic thriller "The French Connection", which gave the album its title.

ELLIS, DON ~ PIECES OF EIGHT

Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006
Sensational reissue of a live recording by the Don Ellis Octet, which was available earlier only partially and is now restored to its full glory with almost an hour of previously unheard music. The album was recorded while Ellis thought a jazz course at the UCLA and features an ad hoc band assembled by him for this one time performance. However, in spite of the haphazard circumstances, the octet performs some first class music, composed mostly by Ellis (with a couple of standards and two tunes by saxophonist Tom Scott being the only exceptions). This is an extraordinary opportunity to hear the brilliant trumpet work by Ellis, which was much subdued when he led his famous Big Band. All band members play some great solos here and the ensemble performance is truly exceptional, which considering the circumstances, proves the incredible professionally of these players. Don's fascination with world music is already evident here, although in subtle undertones. A beautiful jazz album, full
 of energy and joy and very highly recommended to all jazz buffs!

After the longish stream of jazz and fusion additions it's time to come back to some fabulous prog and continue the fantastic Peter Hammill reissues:

HAMMILL, PETER ~ OVER
VIRGIN 370514 (Barcode: 094637051429) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1976 - 1977 Released: 2006
6th album by Hammill and a complete about face compared to the punkish predecessor. Back to his more customary lyricism and gloom, this is an album about end of relationships, a theme common in our lives and therefore more approachable. Hammill's VDGG buddies are back at his side, providing great instrumental support. His voice is stronger and pronunciation clearer then ever, so the lyrics are easily audible. The music moves between melancholic ballads and more up-tempo number. Orchestral arrangements are added on some songs, making this the most versatile Hammill album to date. Many of Hammill's fans cite this to be their favorite album of all, which is quite understandable, as it includes some of his best songs and performances. In retrospect it looses nothing of its power and beauty over the years and remains a true classic.

HAMMILL, PETER ~ THE FUTURE NOW
VIRGIN 370515 (Barcode: 094637051528) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1978 Released: 2006
7th album by Hammill and also regarded as one of his strongest releases. It is more artistic and experimental than its mellow predecessor, with music going all over stylistically. Hammill is almost alone here, playing all the instruments and singing, with some occasional help form VDGG cahoots Jackson and Smith. This is an album that requires repeated listening before it truly sinks in, with layers and layers musical and lyrical overtones that need to be assimilated in time. The effort pays off eventually and once hooked, it stays with you forever. Not recommended to Hammill beginners, but essential to his true fans. The song "If I could" is perhaps Hammill's most memorable creations amongst the hundreds of songs he has written and although he revisits it on later album, the version included here tops them all.

Two new additions today. First comes another Peter Hammill remaster, which means there are still two more to go to complete the remasters series. Then comes the first of a long series of the magnificent John Mayall remasters - much too late for my taste as Mayall was always one of my favorite musicians, but better late than never:

HAMMILL, PETER ~ PH7
VIRGIN 370516 (Barcode: 094637051627) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1979 Released: 2006
8th album by Hammill and another about face compared to its predecessor. This time he comes up with a set of beautifully melodic tunes, almost conventional (mind you Hammill is never really conventional), which are more accessible than almost any of his previous material. Don't misinterpret this as a put down, these are still great songs with many of Hammill's characteristics, all beautifully sung and played. The overall atmosphere is just brighter and less tormented than usual. I haven't listened to this album in a long time and upon hearing the remaster I was pleasantly surprised to rediscover this material, which stands the test of time beautifully. This is yet another face of Hammill's multi-faced artistic portrait. Recommended as a Hammill starter for people who are not aquatinted with his or VDGG work.

MAYALL, JOHN ~ PLAYS JOHN MAYALL

1st album by the hero of my youth and to this date one of my very favorite musicians of all times. Mayall is the absolute Godfather of British blues. Since the early 1960s he's led a streak of blues groups, called The Bluesbreakers, which were a breeding ground for entire generations of future blues and rock superstars. If the names of Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Aynsley Dunbar, John McVie and Keef Hartley (to mention just a very few of his alumni) mean anything to you than you can understand his importance. But Mayall is far more than a bandleader. He plays many instruments and writes superb melodies, some of which are amongst the best blues songs ever written. And of course he sings the blues like nobody else. Mayall not only deeply loves the blues, but he understands it probably more than anybody else, which made it possible for him to expand the art of blues way beyond its original form. Thank God he keeps doing it now for over 50 years - a truly remarkable man and an unprecedented career. This album is a live recording at the London's Klooks Kleek club (a famous meeting place for UK blues musicians). Mayall and his Bluesbreakers perform a brilliant set of songs, composed all by Mayall and this is one of the best examples of how the British blues revival crystallized around that period. Although this music was recorded over 40 years ago, it sounds remarkably fresh and up-to-date, losing nothing of its charm and beauty. Every John Mayall album is an absolute must for any blues fan, this one especially so for its added historical value.

Two more John Mayall remasters added today:

MAYALL, JOHN ~ A HARD ROAD
DECCA 984222 (Barcode: 602498422250) ~ UK ~ Blues
Recorded: 1966 - 1967 Released: 2006
3rd album by Mayall and his Bluesbreakers and one of the all time greatest blues albums ever recorded. Any band leader facing the crisis of his leading instrumentalist leaving the band (when Eric Clapton left The Bluesbreakers after just one album to join Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce to create Cream) would surely despair, but Mayall immediately found not only a replacement for Clapton but also a player of matching virtuosity and sublime feeling for the blues. The young Jewish boy named Peter Greenbaum, or Peter Green as all of you may know him, was just the person and his performance on this album started an illustrious career of one of the blues greatest stars. Of course the other two musicians playing on this album (John McVie - bass and Aynsley Dunbar - drums) were also heading for great musical ventures in the future. Unfortunately the Mayall / Green association was also destined to last for one solitary album (same as the Mayall / Clapton liaison), when Green left to form Fleetwood Mac, soon to be replaced by another guitar hero Mick Taylor. The material includes mostly Mayall's compositions, with Green contributing two of his tunes and a few blues standards. The level of performance is phenomenal and the 60s sound and production create a magic atmosphere making this an everlasting gem.
A special note to collectors:
The numerous bonus tracks on this album include the legendary EP recorded by Mayall and US blues giant Paul Butterfield, which ranks amongst the rarest and most expensive collectors' items on the vinyl market.

MAYALL, JOHN ~ THE BLUES ALONE
DECCA 984180 (Barcode: 602498418055) ~ UK ~ Blues
Recorded: 1967 Released: 2006
5th album by Mayall, although it was in fact recorded shortly before Crusade (the 4th album) but released later on the Decca budget label Ace Of Clubs. Mayall takes the ever so bold step here to face the music (or rather make it) alone, as well as supplying all the compositions. He sings and plays all the instruments and only some drum tracks are courtesy of Keef Hartley. His performance is as brilliant as ever, creating a unique document of the era. Mayall always wanted to record a solo album, but the confusion facing his band after his second lead guitarist left the band following the recording of only one album pushed him to make the album rather sooner that later. Regardless of the circumstances, Mayall manages to create another masterpiece, which is every bit as relevant as it was at the time of the recording. Wholeheartedly recommended!

This magnificent Box Set summarizes the 15 years (and 15 studio albums) of activity by the seminal jazz / fusion band, which shaped the future of the genre probably more than any other band in history. The set includes 3 CDs and a DVD. The CDs give a solid overview of the band's output over the years (1971-1985), starting with a few pre-WR cuts (to show the direction Shorter and Zawinul were taking) and even trying to predict the future by including a DJ remix of one of the tunes. To spice things a bit a few previously unreleased tracks are included. The true gem of the set is the 2 hours long DVD, filmed during WR Heavy Weather tour (with Pastorius and Erskine), which is outstanding in every respect (sound and vision) and alone is worth the price of the entire Box Set. If you don't own all the WR albums already (or any WR albums - shame on you) this is a wonderful opportunity to enter the magic word of WR and get hooked. If you do own the albums, you'll still want the set for the
 bonus tracks and the DVD - in short it's a winner any way you look at it!

I close the October new additions with a true BANG! Here is the album that generations of music lovers had wet dreams about, finally remastered and reissued:

HENRY COW ~ CONCERTS
RER HC5/6 (Barcode: 752725022521) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1973 - 1975 Released: 2006
This magnificent and legendary album is a true document of an era and a glimpse at the process of musical groundbreaking. Henry Cow's visionary music and musical ideology was of course aeons ahead of their time and influenced (in fact influences to this very day) generations of musicians. At the time these recordings were made, Henry Cow were an obscure band, unwanted by their record label (Virgin), which was the cause of this music being released as a double LP on a tiny Norwegian label (Compendium). The vinyl album turned almost immediately into a collectors' item and with time became a Holy Grail of every serious Prog collector (priced accordingly). The fact that the music, although composed, is predominantly improvised, makes it so innovative and fascinating. Although early traces of improvisation in rock were already present since the late 1960s (mostly by musicians, who had some jazz background), the unique combined talents of Henry Cow members managed to give birth to a whole new genre of music, which later was christened as RIO. Improvised rock, with heavy traces of jazz and contemporary classical music is about as close a description as one might think of, but of course words are hardly adequate when describing music, especially music is this caliber. Today the music contained on these two pieces of plastic belongs to the canon of modern music and any person, who considers himself a music connoisseur, can not afford to have this album missing in his collection.
