avers, this is my friend Miyako's (Koenji Hyakkei/Yozigenn/ad infinitum) main band! Been bangin' on about them for an etenity on me thread!

Seen them live a handful of times. Always great. Gotta love a band that can discuss the timbre of Univers Zero and still drink you under the table

Yuko, I missed you mentioning them in the other thread, sorry...Embarrassed

I only listened to it twice and I like this a lot. They are dynamic and combine what is great in different sounding RIO bands to one frame and the result sounds very good to me.
How are their other albums?

I know of this one but have not heard any of their material I breify looked over the name when I was looking at some of Koenji Hyakkei & ad infintum side projects. Then more interest was sparked when Yu mentioned them, along with many pictures of a certain member. From your discription Assaf it sounds like something which would fit nicely into my colleciton. Where did you order it from? Once I get myself a job gain I will start ordering more albums.

An album I know and love - produced by Yoshida (although he doesn't play on it) and highly rated by Chris Cutler among others. He describes it as 'post prog', which is as good a description as any. I only wish I'd thought of it myself.... The title 8.8 refers to the recording date (August 8). Definitely worthy of inclusion, though I'd rather field it to somebody else because I've got enough of a backlog as it is, but I'm working on it guys, I promise!

Yuko, do you know if they've released anything else?

Hey guys.

I'm somewhat of a newbie in this field, so if you specialists could give me some recommendations, would be much appreciated.

I love the Canterbury sound (possibly my favourite sub-genre here), so anything close to that would be good. I already know Absolute Zero (who are amazing, BTW), haven't heard much by Henry Cow, but the sample in the archives sounded strangely fascinating.

Some other bands I already know and like: Alamaailman Vasarat, Höyry-Kone, Univers Zero, Kroko, Miriodor, John Zorn, Zaar, Guapo, Massacre, Hella, Samla Mammas Manna etc etc...

Thanks in advance! Big smile

Hey hey hey, my man Toni Big smile Good to see you here... LOL

So of the top of my head, if you like a those above mentioned you shall probably like (if you don't know already) - Ensemble Nimbus which is linked to SMM - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=501

You can find the ties to Canterbury and also to SMM madness.

Hamster Theatre is also something you could like to try with the relation to Canterbury - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=2168

Not in RIO, but not far, and you might like Cerebus Effect which has been called Cantercury Metal (which is sometimes accurate, but does not describe their entire scope) Check your PM in the coming week...

Oh and given all those bands above, I can also recommend Tipographica - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=699

Thanks Assaf! Clap

I should have mentioned that I already know French TV ... They are good alright, but I was slightly disappointed by the album I heard (Pardon Our French). I should probably re-listen to it though. They never stay in one place for long -- they seem to go in every possible direction without first thinking if it's such a good idea... This can be a bit irritating sometimes, but still a good band.

I'll check out the others though!

I also recommend you get Fukkeduk. Great band. It reminds me of Alamaailman Vasarat only more "mature" sounding.

OKies for the Canterbury side of things, you cannot go wrong with Henry Cow. From some of the Canterbury family trees several sites I have looked upon some see HC to span from this scene. I think Legend would be a good starting point, entailing a completely intrusmental album. If you like Henry Cow the natural progression would be to looking into groups like Art Bear and News From Babel.

Also another album you might be interested in (though coming under Zeuhl) is Kultivator - Barndomens Strigar. At times get a bit of a mixed reaction, but I find it to have strong roots in Canterbury.

Also, I cannot agree more with everyones suggestion of Fukkeduk

Think that's it although they are very active with gigs and side-bands. I've e-mailed Miyako and am awaiting her reply.

Their Japanese label incidentally has a free mp3 available. (Just the one, mind)!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Thanks for the info.

I'm not one to blow my own trumpet (ha!) but I've just added Fred Frith to the archives - with a very selective discography for now. Like Joren with John Zorn, I'll probably add to it as time goes on.

Coming soon(er or later): Chris Cutler, Cutler/Frith, Massacre and Charles Hayward.

Miyako replied and said that they have completed their 2nd cd and that it will be released in December (possibly in Japan first. I'm unsure of their tie-ups with other labels).

She also thanked everyone for buying her music and seemed ecstatic that anyone outside of Japan knows her or her bands!

An' just a quick note on the pronunciation for that authentic pretentious touch:

Le Silo is pronounced Ru Shirow

8.8 is Ha Ten Hachi

Yes I think she has more fans out there than she first though. I have definately been mulling over getting more of material from several different bands.

Can people recommend me this band?

Deep Turtle: I keep seeing their name popping up all over the place and have been intreged by what I have heard. So all those Deep Turtle fans out their tell me what you think.

This is a little review on one of their albums to give everyone the idea what they are about,

DEEP TURTLE Turkele CD
Zerga (Finnish import)

Deep Turtle have been one of those bands that people have always recommended that I check out, but for one reason or another I have never had a chance to actually get my hands on any of their releases, until now. I finally managed to get in touch with the Finnish label Zerga while we were working on getting the new CD from Finnish glitch/improv/prog crushers Kroko, and found out that they also had some copies of the 2003 mini-album from Deep Turtle, Turkele, still available! Very stoked that we finally got ahold of this, as Deep Turtle's crazy pop/prog/hardcore is everything I had hoped it would be. Their music is a heavy, super melodic mutant hardcore punk that moves from mega catchy and almost ska-like at times, to furious pummeling thrash, mixed up with jazzy musicianship, latin rhythms, hints of Eastern Eauropean folk music, and total symphonic prog experimentalism, with crazy complex drumming and powerful bass playing that often switches suddenly into a sort of ridiculously complex, stop/start punk-prog that reminds me of Ruins or Lightning Bolt. Deep Turtle are amazingly adept at combining their insane arrangements with total pop hooks that will glue themselves to your head. All of the lyrics/singing on this disc are in Spanish, which just adds to the weirdness. Seven songs in 23 minutes, highly recommended! Packaged in a full color wallet sleeve.

Sounds like something I'll like. Especially since Lightning Bolt is mentioned.

From memory my first interest was sparked whike reading a review of Kroko's first album. They put a likeness to them as well. Do you know there material Assaf? If you have not I really do recommend them.

Also good you see you have taken such a liking to Lightning Bolt. Which albums have you hear by them?

I'd buy it just for the name! Almost as good as Japan's 'Pink Sabbath'!

Yuko, do you know anything about the following band?  I realise they're not RIO/Avant-prog, but thought I'd ask whilst you're online.

NAIKAKU

Naikaku is a Tokyo base young four-piece band including female flutist. Their aggressive and lyrical music express a contemporary Italian Heavy Progressive Rock which is similar to Osanna and Dream Theater. The Band who continues to evolve music into something new. By adding the more artistic visual images on the sounds of Progressive Rock where lyrical "stillness" and technical "movement" are well harmonized while it changes the scene dramatically and unrestrictedly, Their sound will capture your attention and let you sink your mind into a musical sojourn where the artistic mind can be absorbed by the listeners senses.

My notes:

They have two albums released so far, viz. Wheel of Fortune (2003) and Shell (2006).  They're also playing at the Baja Prog Festival in Mexico, along with Ain Soph, in March 2007.

They sound quite interesting.

Have you heard them?
