Why is everyone so concerned about being happy?

For me, happiness is never going to permanent, whatever you do.  You could be the King/Queen or the ruler of the world, but you won't be always happy, if at all.

I stopped trying to be happy years ago.  Yes I am happy, but I don't seek to be happy.

I take ever day as it comes, if something bad happens, it happens.  There's no point planning things at all really.

Can't see the logic in that.  If that were so, more women would have been created with the ability to have an orgasm thru intercourse.  Last numbers I read said only about 25% can. [IMG]height=17 alt=Tongue src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle>

Probably one of the reasons we hear so many complaints about girls faking it.......[IMG]height=17 alt=LOL src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle>

Should have known it was you as soon as the "Smutty Sex Talk" alarm went off in the Moderator's Control Room...

I think we thing to much of our existence...Im sure the whole univers happend just because God farted one time and the fart was so powerfull it created a univers, and there for us... So the meaning in life would have to be "to stink" as thats what farts do

yes, when David Hume (18th Cent Philosopher who had written tracts on the non-exixtence of God, and a moral argument for committing suicide) was on his death bed, a small crowd gathered around him to see whether the fear of imminant death would force him to change his mind.  He didn't of course, but this didn't stop much of his work being censored and burnt by the establishment.

aside from his beliefs being considered blasphemous, the great fear was that if the farmer was convinced that there was no heavenly reward for the backbreaking work of tilling the ground every day of your life until you dropped dead at 45, and consequently no eternal damnation for stepping out of line, then everyone would want to become aristocracy in this life, and the whole social structure would collapse around the establishment's ears, just like it did in France, 20 years later!

so, as Andy quite rightly points out, the true reason for our existance come down to having a good shag..Wink

You mix up pleasure with happiness. The Dalai Lama says that true happiness can only come through compassion for others and not through pursuing pleasure just for yourself. This gives us a purpose in life - to reduce the suffering of all mankind.

Ahh.. but the question of this thread is "what is the point of Life"... which is totally different than having a purpose in life. Having a purpose in life is an individual issue where the Point of life.... is more universal and sort of asks... so why do we live?

Most of us live, because its a better alternative and less frightening than dying....regardless of whether we're religious and believe we go on to a higher plane... or not religious.. and thats just it, folks!

And if you don't think its a better alternative.. then perhaps you need to come up with a few of those purposes in life...[IMG]height=17 alt=LOL src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle>

Yes, there is a clear difference between purpose and point.

If we'rebringing it back round to the 'point' of life, then I stand by my original assertion. It's all about shagging.

Incorrect, our contribution is only important to us, as a species and is probably something of an inconvenience to many other species on the planet. I'm sure in otter land there are levels of communication between the animals on the most important issues within their sphere of being; mating, feeding, defending themselves and their young etc.

However simple or complex our world, or that of any other species may appear to us, it all comes down to one thing: Shagging.

and the fact that some cannot bring mankind to this simple almmost accidental level (as life on this planet is accidental also) causes some to think of a higher form of life and a creator. So they create a deity! Once this deity is created, then what! Tell you what !! Let's adore it. Guys next doors created a different one, let's talk them into either them joining us or beat them to a pulp. and trouble starts...

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

That makes a lot of sense.

There must be a lot of very unhappy and unfulfilled politicians out there. Does anyone go into that job to make things better for everyone, or just for themselves? Are some so psychotic or unintelligent, they have no idea either way?
