I'm currently studying the philosophies of the Marquis De Sade as part of an Open University course, and your belief system is alarmingly similar to his... at the end of his life, his chief regret was failing to take all the opportunities for a good bonk, which had been presented to him as a younger man...[IMG]height=17 alt=LOL src="http://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif" width=17 align=absMiddle> |
Nonesense, I got laid on Monday night. Bit of a waste of time, as no offspring will come about as a result, but fun nonetheless. That raises an interesting point. Are we the only animal who has sex purely for pleasure?
The Marquis De Sade is right. I often kick myself at all the opportunities I missed for a good roll in the hay when I was young. Stifled by my own bashfulness or lack of self esteem. Oh well..

Dolphins have sex for pleasure.
Aren't they considered to be intellectual/smarter than the average animal?

The only flaw in your argument being the apparent lack of hay in Bracknell....

The irrationalist point of view, especially that of Nietzche, claims that life has no ultimate goal or higher purpose. Life is an abyss of chaos that you must look into in order to find the meaning of one's own existence. It is a very personal experience.
I agree with this somewhat. I believe that everyone has a different point in life, its up to us to find out what that is. Sort of like the poker analogy... everyone is dealt a specific hand of cards in life. Its how you play the game with what you have that determines how successful or happy you will be. Or even how you are judged in the next realm....

Ah yes, Dolphins. I heard that too. They are extremly intelligent, despite having an irresponsible attitude to contraception.

Hi Linda. Good to hear from you again
Nietzche's desription of life as an 'abyss of chaos' rings true. It's felt like that at times. However, despite having stared into my own black hole for many years, I'm yet to find that purpose on a personal level. While I maintain that the purpose of the species as a whole is purely to breed, I know that on a personal level no amount of joyful random breeding would ever make me truly happy.
You bring in a religous element to the discussion here; saying that how one plays ones hand of cards may determine not only how happy they are, but how they are judged beyond their mortal years. I cant relate to this being Athiest, but it seems if you have a faith then you have apurpose in life automatically; to live by the moral codes of that faith, the best you can, so you are judged favourably when you die.

No it's the other way round. All animals have sex for pleasure. Humans are the only ones who do it with the specific aim of procreation. For the other animals, they probably don't realise that sex and babies are connected so they just have sex for pleasure.

You mix up pleasure with happiness. The Dalai Lama says that true happiness can only come through compassion for others and not through pursuing pleasure just for yourself. This gives us a purpose in life - to reduce the suffering of all mankind.
