Topic: Justin Chancellor (Tool) Posted: October 08 2006 at 16:16 |
So, whats your opinion about Justin Chancellor, the bassist of Tool? He's really is a great player, and has superb bass lines...
So, do you admire him (or not?? )
....................I personally DO

He's an awesome bass player, although his work on 10,000 days is supposed to be his best, i can't bring myself to appreciate it coz it literally pains me to listen to that abortion of an album.
But undertow, aenima, lateralus = superb!

The Pot sucks.
Nothing memorable about it at all and the lyrics are terrible.
You've got to be on `pot' to enjoy it... damn i'm funny!

No, your not. Justin Chancellor is pretty good bassist and has a great sound but he's not one of the best.

Yes, he is good and an integral part of the Tool sound. I love his minimal playing in the Wings songs, very efective without using much

If an album was an epic song of 75 min, and there was just a plain one-note guitar solo played with a broken guitar and in the middle of this song was Tool's Wings it could hardly be called an abortion of an album.

If Justin Chancellor is a great bass player my Geddy Lee & John Myung trained ears would have picked up on it by now. JC is good but nowhere near being great in my humble opinion

Other than the fantastic riff on Schism I have not noticed him. This does not mean he is no good, his playing does not jump out at me.

His sound is an integral part of the TOOL sound...dark and moody. He is a great bass player!

I'm baffled by the admiration for him. He's completely ordinary, as are the rest of the band. Mediocre and slightly boring songs, played competently enough but without any sign of virtuosity, though the drummer and singer are pretty good.
If I had to choose between DT and Tool, I'd actually go for DT because at least I could admire the virtuoso playing. Lateratus is THE most overrated album in the top 100 IMO. To see it above masterpieces like Mirage, In the Land of Grey and Pink and Meddle actually makes me laugh, it's so ridiculous.

Geddy Lee & John Myung are really able and talented musicians. The fact that I prefer bassists (on the metal scene) like Martin Lopez and Justin Chancellor maybe lies to the fact that I prefer Anathema over Spastic Ink .

His lines are good. Technically he's not that great though.

I think Justin is a very underated player.Ok maybe 10000 Days isn't to everyones taste but to me JC's bass is the highlight on that album. Can't wait to see Tool live again.

I saw Tool in Columbus a few weeks ago, and apart from the spectacle of the show itself, it was Justin's bass playing that really impressed me. He makes a lot of different sounds with the bass and I don't think he ever repeats himself as far as a particular sound throughout different songs.

While I do agree that he is wholly nothing fantastic...he's written some good lines for the band here and there albeit 90% in D minor...not, and nor are Tool really, a very varied output.
