Guitar Help

Hey... im new in prog... i like yes, floyd, genesis, zeppelin (not prog i know), emerson, beatles, etc...

and im new in guitar too... i know a few songs.. like stairway to heaven, babe im gonna leave you... roundabout intro, turn of the century intro, from the beginning, is there anybody outthere?...

and im practicing only with songs i like.. so i want to know if you can tell me some good songs to learn and ill download them in guitar pro.. just tell me the names.. of songs that considering the songs ive learnt you could tell me.. or more difficult i dontknow

Based on the songs you cite, I remeber 'Hey You' (from 'The Wall') as being fun to play, fairly simple and a good intro to the Gilmour way of composing.

 Spock's Beard has a great little ditty for solo acoustic guitar, "Chataqua" from Beware of Darkness. The band even has a tab of it on their website. The drawback is that it isn't a professional tab and not the easiest to read.

 Tab does get pretty annoying and any serious musician needs to learn how to read. I would recommend looking at Powertab if you haven't already. It is a tabbing program but it also generates the standard notation with the tab so you can look at both. It does make notation mistakes, like incorrectly using flats instead of sharps in certain keys. But hey it's just a stupid program. In its favour, it's free! You can download it at numerous sites. There are also numerous sites that archive the tabs. The program also has midi capabilities so you can hear a rendition of the tune. Search google for powertab websites. Speaking of this, does anyone happen to know if there is a Powertab version of "Chataqua"? I'd love to see the actual music instead of the tab.

 Unfortunately, the best way to read music is to simply just try it. The more you see the better you'll get. Having said that, there is a great site out there that has tons of free guitar music in standard notation. The webpage for the Iceland Guitar School has loads of free music in .pdf format. It has a range of stuff too, from very simple to VERY tough. It's tough to find popular music (even tougher for prog) which is in standard notation. All that tab gets annoying. Most of the music you will find without tab will be classical or spanish music. This guitar school site is no different. Search google (or whatever search engine) for the Iceland Guitar School. By the way, this site is pretty much dedicated to a traditional Segovian approach to classical guitar. But you can use music just to practice reading. Happy playing!

I mess around with the guitar solo on Firth of Fifth, fairly straightforward solo, I never get bored of it.

Ok, seriously. Blood on the Rooftops is hard. from Genesis I'd suggest Entangled and Squonk from the late era. Hm, well, they have a lot of guitar songs that are possible. For Absent Friends is one of my favourites, and quite possible too.

Then I'd recommend Jethro Tull, Skating Away on a Thin Ice of a New Day... thought don't try to sing while you play, I couldn't. These are really cool songs for acoustic and electric, but quite hard, so as a next step maybe. Can't think of a better way of training ones rythm playing than J-Tull. A couple of songs more, hmm... Well, Heavy Horses... and oh oh, Aqualung. And the solo rocks. Though you don't get these for GP, I guess...

Perfecct for training arpeggios would be some guitar songs from ELP, like From The Beginning or C'est la Vie. well, I guess some Geness stuff would do this as well, but are harder. The Cinema Show for example is great.

Yeah, I think that's enough for a while, or? These are my personal favorites. Oh, and try Dust in the Wind by Kansas, girls like it, I should know
