Il y a des Jours |
Part of a holy and wholly ignored French tradition of fey, Art Brut-addled, Rock In Opposition associated f**kery, Hellebore are shot through with the same rich veins of Inspired illogic that riddle the work of Etron Fou Lelouban and Albert Marcoeur, the twin 70s founts for this breed of Gallic musical eccentricity. In the 80s, ground zero for these developments was the Ayaa label and its proprietor, Denis Tagu. With membership in four of this genre's finest outfits (Look De Bouk, Szentendre, Toupidek Limonade and Hellebore), Tagu is truly the grand old man of this terminally obscure contingent. In concord with the practices of his other units, Hellebore's bouts of breezy bonhomie and subtly skewed savois-faire are, on their one and only mid-80s release, repeatedly destabilized by all manner of impish harmonic chicanery. Unlike Tagu's other units however, Hellebore frequently corral all these wayward tendencies into terrain that's often both darker and jazzier than anything else he's had a hand in.
A track like Uminak-Marquis De Saint Cricq presents a virtual catalog of Hellebore's collective strategies, weaving languid threads of intertwining guitar and clarinet filigree before collapsing into a slurry of Contortions-level cacophony, coming up for air amidst tinking rhythm boxes and haunting male choruses, morphing into a wheezing Parisian Cluster plus piano and finally lurching into a discordant march.
Hellebore's paean to the spirit of musical unpeggability is a sonic treasure chest for those willing to look outside the margins.

I was at that gig Faaip. Great setlist and a great show. My buddy was PAing for them (he's great friends with Yoshida) so I will try and get the md from the soundboard if possible. The sound quality on the dvd is excellent but the camera angles are pretty shoddy (but bear in mind it is only a 200 capacity venue)
I fell in love with Kyoko that night. She is absolutely gorgeous !

Thankfully there are NO crowd shots ! You can just make out the front row. I was at the back propping up the bar as per the usual
The pictures on the sleeve are from the same gig.
After the show I tried chatting up Kyoko but she was 'aving none of it...

Never heard any Kayo Dot. What's your recommendation ?
Presuming the lovely violinist is Japanese try this line:
"Mia-chan. sh*tsumon sh*te ii desu ka ? Moshi yokereba issho ni nomi ni ikimasen ka ?"
(Hi Mia, can I ask you something ? If you're ok shall we go for a drink together ? )
Sounds pretty cheesy in English but it's quite sweet in Japanese
Edit: Works computer is acting up! Also the naughty word filter has come out to play. Replace the asterisks with i. Also be careful with the pronunciation !

Umm so far they've only realeased 2 albums... And it's kinda hard to pick between the two. But i'd go with 'Choirs Of The Eye' seeing how it's the better Kayo introduction. Haha ! that's going to be slighty hard to remember, But i'll go for it ! ... even though i'm not sure if she even know's Japanese. Haha she might feel kinda odd going out for drinks with a sixteen year old though. And im sure she'd enjoy going to a haunted house a little better anyway (she's into that freaky stuff) EDIT* I've lost the function to quote correctly apparently But i will try to say that !
