This thread makes me cry for I cant understand how anybody couldnt get into those bands mentioned here. HOw can you dislike music because of growls? Thats stupid, real art isnt about "uh I like that voice" or "uh I like that melody" it is about expression, passion and understanding!! " to like" is the wrong approach to prog in my eyes

I know exactly what you mean.

I don't "fear" that I'll never get into Yes, as it's been 25 years now, and I still can't stand Jon Anderson's voice or lyrics...

I'll stop right there, I think - it's just never going to happen

The important thing is not to stop questioning.

I don't really understand the topic. Why should I (anyone) fear from never to get any band? Seriously. Do you mean it is possible to get into any band by force? Is there any "gentleman set" of bands, kind of a "passport" into the "high" community of the people who "do understand" the music? I live (exist?) with no problem not liking, say, Genesis, too much; probably, I don't get them, so what? There are still bands that I like...

I'm about to listen to Ghost Reveries, so I'll let you know if I still think the album is ruined by the death growls. Wink

How can you not consider Pink Floyd prog? Surely you haven't heard the pre-Dark Side Of The Moon records then. I recommend Meddle. That being said, I don't believe that I will ever get Marillion.

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

Well its too easy to mention any band that is ina genre I dislike anyway, so sticking firmly with 70's prog, I'd have to say Jethro Tull. I have tried & tried but it just doesnt click with me. I also have a problem with neo-prog bands who re-tread the 70's era (I don't include new vision bands: Cardiacs/Mars Volta/Primus/Gorky's Zygotic Mynci)

Mostly anything with growling. I've just had a good listen to Dan Swano's Moontower. What a great pity, the growling ruined it for me. Similarly Opeth without growling is some of the most beautiful music around. A right turn off with it. Especially when both singers have such great normal voices

Well, I love Yes, Early Genesis, Gentle Giant, Zappa, King Crimson, but I never got into ELP. It just feels like a showcase for Emerson and Palmer. And Palmer, although very fast, can't groove.

I love Moontower. Swano has such a good death metal voice. He can sing on key with a normal voice, but it's just so bleh when he sings normally....reminds me of a generic nu-metal voice.

It took me a long time to really start to like the growl. But one day, I heard a song I really liked, and the whole thing just kinda clicked for me.

I have a problem with Jethro Tull, but from the classic era I never could appreiate Genesis, except some bits of music and songs. And Gentle Giant does nothing for me til now.

Generally speaking I can't get into any of the bands from the "revival" of prog, and neoprog as well. But fusion help me a lot to understand more about jazz, especially bebop.
Bach, Ma, Bros, Déia, Dante.

I have started to like gentle giant, but I can't listen to an album straight through.  I've gotten much closer, and i love the bass.
