I guess you meant that sarcastic, as Jethro Tull also recorded a Christmas album.

well, IMHO, there are two sides of it...
first of all, i don't like BN, i think is poor folk, and i'm sure Richie did it for Candice... so, no, since the motive wasn't need for expression via music, i don't agree with this project, even less for Christmas Carols...
still, i wouldn't expect anything great from him if he didn't go down that road... i mean, if he had Rainbow or was in Purple, he wouldn't change the history of music like he once did... he would probably release mediocre LPs like Purple do and just tour to perform his classics much like the best tribute band to himself... what i'm trying to say is i don't miss him from the rock map... and since he is commiting the most acceptable crime - submitting to his lady's will - just let the guy do whatever he likes... he's written his own gold pages in the big book of rock music, we will always love him and listen to his immortal rock anthems...

Back to Blackmore's Night now...

Actually it is easy to see the plot here. Obviously Ritchie is madly hooked on the blonde and she and her mother know it. And they both know her talents are limited (Ritchie probably knows it too, but he's getting his thingie wet, so he cares only halfway) and they know the project would not survive Ritchie's wake up call.
So the dragon mother-in-law is watching out for potential dangers (or other sirens) and loses her temper stupidly when the "Purple Spectre" goes by her. Question of personal insecurity, I guess

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

Blackmore's Night is great. And if Ritchie likes what he is doing, how can anyone be so selfish to say that he is wasting his talent?

A lot of people share my view. Shadow of the moon was a great album but lately his output is rather commercial and monotonous.
He has cut off his nose to spite his face.
I like some Blackmore´s Night (in fact I´m a big Blackmore fan), but what he will be remembered for is his fantastic guitar work in the seventies.

I am torn between both of your stance.
People need to get over Blackmore's past. He does not owe anyone anything anymore, especially noyt the industry.
So Ritchie does exactly what he wants , fine for him and he's got a delicious babe to sink his teeth (and more) into. I read somewhere that he is really living out a fantasy as best as he can.
But let's face it, if the first two or three albums were acceptable, the formula has grown quite thin, and Candice, whose talents are pretty thin (on stage anyway, I will not judge otherwise), is now becoming increasingly irritating. she is not a good singer, just passable. And the show is actually held/run by Candice's mother who acts as their manager.
Fortunately no-one is forcing me to listen to their stuff.
But I think it is time Ritchie stopped before BN is becoming ridiculous. |
Some say he made a fool of himself with Rainbow (the 80's Rainbow)
ex; with a siger like JLT (though don't get me wrong, I really enjoy JLT and Rainbow-I was listening to Power when I wrote this)...

It's got to be slow
Taking love the only way
It's got to just flow
Making love and taking time to let it grow

As a big-time Blackmore fan, I could weep! What the hell is he on? I'm sorry if I'm offending anyone who can actually take pleasure from the twee pap he is vomiting forth, but, remember, this man was THE finest British rock guitar player. Ever.
I can't fathom him at all, why didn't he explore his classical leanings further? Refine the stuff he did in his Rainbow days with Beethoven, Holst etc?
The man (in black) has clearly lost the plot ![Cry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)

Well I don't like what he does now but I couldn't say it's really that bad. I do think he
errs too much on the side of twee though, and the Christmas album isn't the right step. There's nothing wrong with going down a folk path, I think he just should have done it without novelty or corniness attached.
