I bought Godbluff by VDGG, and I have a hard time with their style, and with Hamill's vocals... Any album by VDGG you guys recommend? |
H to He, Who Am the Only One Its their most accessible album "Killer" and "House with No Door" are amazing songs. VDGG is simply brilliant.

That's right. And, as already was said in another thread, I would recommend also The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other (more like H To He, Who Am The Only One) and Still Life (more like Godbluff). But, overall, Van der Graaf Generator is the group which is very hard to get into... However, once you like it, you (probably) love it forever...

Magma. I ..... just.... can't..... get into it. The songs start out nicely but then they repeat the same verse 100 times and that repetition is driving me nuts! especially since it's in a gibberish language. And Mars Volta. They're just pop-punk to me. I don't see (or rather hear) any progressive elements in their music.

I had problems with Hammil's vocals aswell. Whenever he started singing I felt like punching my speakers But I persevered and I now I find his voice to be incredible, among the finest in prog. There's no guaranteeing (sp?) that you'll get into the band, it's definetely an aquired taste and it' a lot like the lottery: there's a chance you'll win, and there's a chance you'll lose.....

Why should you wnt to get into a band.
If it doesn't sound right on first listening I leave it alone for a while, adn try again later, just in case I missed it the first time, if than I still can't find anything worthwhile I will simple not listen to them anymore. If you really want too you can make yourself believe you like something, but in the end your only bore yourself.
so don't try to hard to like something, just focus on what you like, every minute wasted on listening something you don't like is a minute lost forever.

Neil Morse Solo.I really liked Spock's Beard but now that he is making overtly religious music I am not interested in being preached at. I don't mind more subtle lyrics but the titles are enough to put me off. Good luck to him, I am sure he is happy but I feel disinclined to listen to his new stuff. The main problem is he took Spocks Beard's interesting music with him...

I could not agree more with you, Spocks lost something and his solo stuff makes me cringe, I gave up on him, just cant stand another sixty mins of the same "jesus this, god that" with Mike Portnoy drumming. I love DT but he is wasted w/Morse.

AS for bands, I cant get into....a few..
Radiohead, do not too much for me, though I do like the song 'Airbag' alot!
Tool - likely coz I love synths, so that maybe the issue there.
Opeth - same as most other people, I cant stand his vocals, if all their albums were like 'Damnation' I would be a big fan.

It's strange isn't it... I just can't get into Opeth at all, and I made a concerted effort with Ghost Reveries, because my Brother In Law is so heavily into it. I sold my copy in the end...
On the other hand, I genuinely think Tool's Lateralus is in the top 5 prog metal albums of this century... I found it courtesy of PA, and it spent the entire of last summer going round and round in the car CD player!! Why?? I can't really explain!

It's got to just flow
Making love and taking time to let it grow

Tool, Spock's Beard, Eloy
Mahavishnu Orchestra and ELP were tough for a while, but they eventually clicked for me after repeated listens.

Oh, my dears... I am relieved this thread is open! There is "something" about Yes that irritates the .....out of me! there ! I said it! At last the burden is lifted ..... ! of course ,it could be associations of the times( one in particular comes to mind ) I guess I really need melodic prog in any form. I'm not like you , perhaps........my ears are a direct link to my heart............but you still all have the biggest of hearts!! later.....
