I very much doubt it, Jim, scanning negs isn't very complicated at all, printing b&w in a dark room is rocket science in comparison!

i am amazed British comedy shows are so popular around the world, perhaps people share a love of the absurd? what do you find funny about them? all satirical comedy is popular in every nationality, that could be the key!

Pfff, that's not an easy question, yes the absurd types and absurd situations. They are very popular over here. The typical dry English humor. Have you ever watched German humor on German TV, it's terrible ( hope MikeEnragalia is not reading this )
The Dutch are not much better.

haven't seen much humour from other countries in Europe, i'm not really a fan of American humour - except Phil Silvers' "Sgt.Bilko", that was absolutely brilliant!!
i heard an example of Russian humour - a friend of mine was working in Moscow, where they wear those fur hats with the ear flaps - for a joke the Russians told him if you wore the hat with the flaps down it meant you were gay. his poor ears were nearly frost-bitten before he realised he was having his leg pulled!!!

Fawlty Towers is excellent stuff! I have just got my kids into it (we have the series on vhs) and they find it hilarious...............although they did work out where my partner gets most of his best jokes/quotes from!
Black Adder is also a favourite in this house, and Monty Python of course!

Maybe it's just me, but almost every American film I see on late at night involves mindless car chases, shootings, stabbing, swearing... what ever happened to harmless films that dealt with adult concepts in an intelligent way? I'm not saying all violent films are inherently bad, not at all, but some of them are pointless and not even worth making. It's also not always a question of violence, but it's often a question of how much the film costs to make! |
Intelligent way? isn't that called a "chick flick"???
C'mon-gorey and senseless violence rules!

Now you're making me feel old! My brother had a ZX81 and later on, an Acorn Electron. My first PC was a 386... actually, that was the family machine, my first PC was an AMD K5 133MHz.
I had - and still have - an Atari ST 520, which cost over £300 at the time.
I went to school when the Internet was barely in existence, so I didn't have the advantage of being able to find information at a click of a button. Yes, I had to go a building called a library!

HA! You think you're old-the first computer here was a Commodore 64 and it used BASIC!
I learned computer in school on TRS 80's and Apples and had some training inPASCAL in college.

I just turned 40.
Remember when all of our toys were made of metal, playground equipment had sharp edges, bolts sticking out and a concrete pad under the jungle gyms and riding a bike with a helmet on was unheard of? | When I was 9 years old my parents brought me to a playground in a park. I ran to the giant metal slide, the kind of slide that has a metal tube covering it, and climbed the stairs. When I got to the top my mother decided to snap my picture going down, just as I got to the slide and started to sit, I whacked my forehead on that metal tube enclosure and just about gave myself a concussion. As I slid down the slide my mother snapped the picture. Later after getting the pictures developed, there is a great picture of me sliding down the slide, holding my head in pain and crying! |
Those old playgrounds were great. Full of danger. Do you think our parents were trying to thin the herd?
Bill Cosby had a great routine about this. |
Our playground I recall had a rusty military airplane on it that the kids would climb all over until some totally bogus parents complained that we'd get hurt on the thing. They just recently upgraded the playground in the park to have plastic equipment on this rubber stuff and signs designating the age groups that can play on each set. What fun is that if you cannot risk getting launched into the air on a see saw or get kicked in the head by a kid twice your age on the jungle gym?
We are raising a society of pansies-I swear!

playgrounds were death traps when i was a kid - concrete, metal, every torture trap you could think of! i was always falling or banging my head, my knees were permanently skinned. nowadays they have their mums there with them, and if they fall and hit the ground they just bounce, and all the climbing thingies are plastic. we have a local "wacky fun house" full of cages and plastic balls, i would love to have played in one of those! i used to love to go swimming - you were allowed to dive in the pool in those days (open air pools), it was a lot more fun, there were life guards but they didn't get on your case like they do now.

Speaking of death traps-anyone here recall Action Park in NJ?
