I bought it yesterday and now I'm listening to it for the second time (yesterday I had a rough day, and it was not the best moment for me to appreciate it). What I noticed first is that it sounds much slower, almost reflective, in comparison to the sheer energy levels of "De-loused.." and the unbridled sonic madness of FtM. That said, it'll probably be harder to get into than both its predecessors - though its quality shows clearly even from a superficial listen.

Incredible album. Two small complaints though - too much Frusciante! He's a good guitarist and all, but it needs more Omar. Also, the production really bugs me, all the instruments sound crisp and audible except for the drums- which are amazing, but they seem to get buried underneath all the other instruments. Aside from those two gripes i feel this album is *almost* as good as Deloused. "tetragrammaton" knocks me on my arse every time!

Am listening to it for the fourth time in the 36 hours since I got my hands on it ... some great new songs to add to the already impressive catalogue ... Vermicide, Viscera Eyes, Tetragrammaton all awesome ... nothing really weak ... I still want them to do more ... but I'm very satisfied with this for now

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I've only listened all the way through once thus far, so I'm still forming an opinion...
but my initial impression was that the first 2 tracks seem somewhat
forced to me. From track 3 on, I started hearing TMV that I know and
love.

I think it's their best album. It's less noisy and chaotic, and more musical. Even those who don't like the previous albums should definitely listen to it!

This album did it for me! TMV finally pulled me to appreciate their music!
I completely agree with what Mike said.
BTW..

It is weird how different all three albums are, but amputechture is a huge step from frances. I still like Deloused better, but that could change with a few more listens.

I can't shake the feeling that The Mars Volta's releases are some kind of cruel joke on the consumer. Every time you buy a Mars Volta album, Cedric and Omar laugh all the way to the bank. Kaching!
There is such a huge amount of acclaim and scorn -- love and disgust. Perhaps they're either musically brilliant, or brilliant tricksters/ poseurs. Much as I may, almost, enjoy their music, I can't help but feel that I'm being conned.
I wanted to hear what others heard in Aputechture, and came very close, but every time I came anywhere close to liking it, my good taste rebelled, and apparently common sense prevailed.
I know that I listen to them more I might well start liking them, and that scares me.
Is it more artsy or fartsy? I know this is cynical, but might they one day proclaim that it was all just a joke?
