Gentle Giant
Van Der Graff Generator
Opeth (Ghost Reveries is WAY too gloomy and death metalish. I'll listen to Damnation on a fellow co-workers iTunes on Monday)
Mars Volta
Sigur Ros (Takk is good; however, with all I've heard it sounds like the same song and the vocals can be a bit borish at times.)

If I had to list prog bands that I just don't like: Kansas, Symphony X, Asia and Styx. But it's not like I can't get into it, I just don't like some aspects of their music.

I kind of feel this way about The Mars Volta, Tool, Gentle Giant, and Marillion... although I'm closer to accepting the fact that Tool and Marillion just aren't for me.  I do kind of like both TMV's Deloused and GG's Octopus... but not enough to rush to the store to buy more of their albums.

Not at all! Raging against God... you mean Eulogy? That's not God, that's preachers. Look on one of the layers of the Lateralus biooklet, it has 'God' in the brains. Wonder why?Wink And they can be quite optimistic, just listen to Parabola.

I appreciate what The Mars Volta are trying to do, but they haven't been able to "click" with me yet. In they're defence, I've only heard snippets of songs.

Yeah, Tool has nothing against God at all. Lateralus and Reflection are also quite good tracks lyrically in a positive sense also. There is actually more to Tool lyrically then meets the eye. Wink

Genesis. Not that I 'fear' never getting into them, I just suspect I never will after all these years of opportunity.

I own several of the 70's albums and am sure they are of very high caliber, but there is simply no spark whatsoever that I get from hearing any of their music. I suspect there are probably cultural aspects to this, much like why very few Brits much fancy Kansas or the Allman Brothers, but seem to think highly of Wishbone Ash.

There's really no band here I really strongly dislike (with the notable exception of Triumph ), although there are of course certain albums that are probably hopeless, even some from Yes, Kansas, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd.

Just my two cents, for whatever it's worth.

The Mars Volta just doesn't do it for me. Opeth I mostly like, although the cookie monster stuff leaves me cold.
And, to be honest, VGG isn't for me either. Also, this zeuhl stuff is just too bizarre.

Just my opinon, I'm sure others disagree.
Bring me my broadsword, and clear understanding.

Not a band, but rather an album. Though I like TFTO, I still have not "gotten into" it, even though I'm thoroughly obsessed with Relayer and CTTE, its direct neighbors. Very difficult album...

Thanks Gravity eyelids and The miracle.I must confess i heard that they were anti-God through somebody else, it wasn't anything i myself caught in the lyrics.Am i wrong then that their lyrics are hateful and negative?I didn't really give them much of a chance i'm afraid. And for those who can't get into them, why can't you?

They are not hateful at all though can be pretty depressing/negative, but never overdo it. Maynard is actually an excellent lyricist and his lyrics outstanding poetry for the most part. And don't get scared away by titles like "Hooker With A Penis", it actually makes sence lyrically.

I cannot think of many bands i do not get it regarding the prog metal, fusion, RIO, symphonic, art rock, canterbury, folk prog, electronic, italian and neo prog (except maybe Tool, Townsend and some KC of th 90's). on the other hand, i do not get the majority of bands in the krautrock and post rock styles. VDGG is significant if i exclude hammil's voice. Curiously, i don't get most of the krautrock bands excerpt amon duul2 and the rock'n roll bits of guru guru.

Both excellent bands ... but not my taste
Tool, which i can tolerate more than the other band, great metal, excellent vocals, but boring for me.. i dont know exactly the reason, but i dont get them...

The Mars Volta... another excellent band with great musical arrangements, but honestly i cant stand them, i cant stand their prescence, the vocals for me are horrible, the name of the songs (yeah i know you say there are cool) but i think they are ridicolous and only because they want to sound different or innovative... also i cant stand their influence to young people and fanatics (i know DT or Radiohead influence them as well, but i like their music, here is not the case), in fact i think actually TMV is one  of the most representative bands nowadays and i applause that, but simply i dont like them... and i wont ever be able to like them i think..

Marillion (lots of neo for that matter) and perhaps VdGG- that may change though. I actually end up liking most of what I hear.
