The song Rhayader by Camel. That defines the '70s sound for me.

Yes's Gates of Delirium has my vote for quinessential progressive rock, particularly the live version on YesShows.

I normally use the term Prog as an abbreviated form of the term Progressive Rock, so, in a nutshell, it is rock music that is progressive in nature, as opposed to rock music that is a bit progressive in places.
To be progressive in nature, a song or album must satisfy three simple criteria;
1. That it is progressive in all 5 of the basic elements of music.
2. That it is also lyrically progressive.
3. That it is clearly the artists' intention to create a progressive work of art, not simply to play in what is considered to be a progressive style.
Obviously none of this can happen in a vacuum, but there is always something both subjective and relative about measuring quality in music.
Even the terms "rock music" and "progressive" are subjective to some degree - but that's part of what makes analysing Prog Rock so much fun!

Think about the definiton of the word 'progressive'. If a band these days re-uses the same sounds as a 70's prog band, is that band really making progress on any sound or style of music? NO, it's actually regressive.
For me, progressive rock is not a static genre. It's not even a well-defined genre. It only characterizes the mindset of a band who intends to use their musical talent to create an original sound or idea. In the 70's, bands like genesis and yes were considered progressive because they were creating a new sound for rock. If a band tried to follow their sound now, it would no longer be "making progress" since it has already been done before.
Progressive Rock = Innovation, Originality, Experimentalism

Prog is something that's not easy to define. The song that could define progressive rock prefectly ineach element could be "Close To The Edge" or "Machine Messiah" by Yes

Things can be proggie in different ways for me. For the most part, I'd define it as rock music that incorporates melodies that would be too melodic for traditional rock-and-roll, more based on diatonic scales than pentatonic blues.
Added points for use of unusual time signatures, recurring themes, longer songs...

My definition:
The greatest music ever, existing between 1965 and 1979 wherabouts.
Blending of different genres with a basis of rock and roll and psych. Key elemnts that make it prog are the Synths and pianos used at the time and the drumming and sound quality.

IMO, GENTLE GIANT.
They took the then emerging progression in rock music, refined and crafted it, wrapped it shiny cellophane, tied a ribbon around it with a bow and left it under the Christmas tree of every enthusiast who was or is prepared to embrace the challenge that their music offers.
[NB.Please, I'm not suggesting you have to be a Christian to enjoy prog or GG. I am ,of course ,speaking metaphorically. Is it necessary to explain this ? I hope not because there is no offence meant].

Looking still the same after all these years...
