As good as On Reflection, Knots, etc. are, there is one GG track that always comes immediately to my mind when thinking about vocal harmonies---the chorus of "Pantagruel's Nativity". Ahhh, pure bliss...

The best vocal harmonies I ever heard are from the Soviet/Byelorussian group Pesnyary (how many of you are acquainted with them?)
Out of Prog domain -- probably, the Tuvan singing (when the "normal" singing interchanges wit the throat-singing). For example, something by the group called Huun-Huur-Tu.

I know that Marillion don't 'specialise' in vocal harmonies but I have to wave the flag for my favourite band:
Closing section of 'Man Of A Thousand Faces' Closing section of 'Go!' Awesome! |

I just have to mention Sacred Baboon here from Yezda Urfa, it has some Gentle Giantian harmononies there.
EDIT: Just a word of warning, you MUST use headphones while listening to GG! The stereo effect is amazing! ![]() Edited by JrKASperov - September 13 2006 at 16:56 |

I'm in complete and total shock. Has no one even thought to mention Simon & Garfunkel???
I think that those two have the best chemistry I've ever heard.
I personally love Yes, but the harmonies aren't always great.
Harmonies that come to mind are the end of "Heart Attack In A Layby", "Bleak", and all of Alice In Chains' material (Cantrell is so underrated as a singer, and Layne has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard).

I love Gentle Giant and Yezda Urfa for vocal harmonies. And, probably been mentioned already, but Et Cetera deserves a nod. "Newton Avait Raison" can be found on this page --> CLICK

The oft neglected, nearly prog band Capability Brown were Charisma Records' harmony specialists - check out, if you have the chance, Keep Death Off The Road, Drive On The Pavement. Have to go a long way, though, to beat CSN's Suite Judy Blue Eyes.

Gentle Giant definitely has great vocal harmonies. I recently acquired Three Friends and I was really impressed. Prologue has some really interesting vocals.

Asides from the Eagles and other west-coast-oriented stuff ( England Dan & John Ford Coley came to my mind immediatly ) I'm deeply in love with the vocal harmonies BJH did on "Live Tapes", "One Night" in particular. I know they didn't always hit it perfectly but especially this gives a very unique feel to it, it's lifting me up !

Frost's Milliontown has some awesome vocal harmonies. Of course, you can always go with A Night At The Opera.

Yes on TALES. Anderson sings SATB parts in a lot of this!
Gentle Giant doesn't usually use vocal harmonies as much as vocal COUNTERPOINT. But it's still incredible. |
