Topic: Four Prog Metal Bands Posted: September 12 2006 at 20:36 |
I was listening to some lesser known bands today and I am curious as to how people would rate them?
As for me it´s probably between Dali´s Dilemma and Superior, can´t decide yet...

Damn...4 really good, sort of obscure PM bands.Pretty hard to choose but I would have to say Unexpect, their album Utopia is brilliant.

Í will check that one out
The song I listened to by them had a woman singing sort of opera vocals in the background and a guy singing like a demon (My wife rolled her eyes and asked what the hell I was playing! )

I think I got it wrong, it was actually Thine Eyes Bleed that made my wife flee in terror!

oh man, i'm definetely going for Unexpect; their latest output - In A Flesh Aquarium - is really like nothing i've heard before, be it prog or extreme metal, or both; it's really outstanding [if you can stand it ]

I like Superior the best. Dali's Dilemma isn't far behind.

Haven't heard Unexpect or Eyes Bleed...
I've heard people rave about Superior for years, but quite frankly don't find them to be all that progressive. I own Behind and have listened to it many times. Fairly straight-forward song structures, heavy with some piano thrown in. Does piano+metal=progressive metal? Anyway, not bad, just not prog in my book.
Dali's Dilemma is my choice. Clearly in the Dream Theater camp. However, I think the song-writing stands on it's own (better than most of DT's post-Awake writing IMO) and the musicianship is bordering on incredible, especially the drumming. If they ever came out with another album, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I've only heard Dali's Dilemma and Superior hence no vote, but must say that Dali's Dilemma is far superior over Superior

UnexpecT without a doubt - by far the most innovative of the bunch.
TheProgtologist: if you've only listened to Utopia, try the new one, since it's about thirty times better in my opinion. Truly challenging stuff.
