can anyone recommend a pair of cheap headphones, but that are very durable. I need the ones that are like ipod headphones. The ones that fit rit into your ear, small.
I have surround sound PC sound and stuff, and I want pretty quality, but i dont know if they make quality ipod like headphones in that small style.

Well, I listen to to most of my prog with my second hand Panasonic CD player from 1998, which I got for free (Persuasion is a good tool to have). However, I plug in my Bose Quiet Comfort2 Headphones and let the music do the rest. Its like a Sanctuary, where its you and your favorite prog group(s) Zappa, Harmonium, Rush, Supertramp, ect. . . playig you a private show, a one manshow, or its as if you are at the studio watching them play.
These are overpriced and and a bit cumbersome, but well worth the investment to hear some of the most obscure prog bans with refined clarity.
Also, I love guitar and find that playing with the Bose in the amplifier foments creativity, and when I finish a chord progression, or song, and play it without the bose it sounds much better. Edited by Asyte2c00 - August 27 2006 at 23:41 |

Those "earbuds" aren't too good for your ears and only portray a limited amount of what is really in the music - I'd really recommend something like a decent pair of Sennheisers.
Even cheap Sennheisers sound fantastic! |

i have a pair of sony earphones that are far better than the ipod ones (the ipod ones are appaling) they only cost me £17.99 . i think earbuds can only get so good so there isnt much point in spending lots on them. i just bought some grado SR80s (headphones) they seem fantastic so far , they are far less congested sounding (if that makes sense) than my earphones and the detail is fantastic. if you can i would recomend headphones over earphones.

So earbuds - the only possible way to go is Shure, EC2 or EC3. They aren't cheap and you have to persevere with the various supplied ear-seal options to get the one that works for you but once right they are capable of astonishingly realistic stereo imaging and detail - only problem is they are a little light on the bass.
Proper headphones - well, the AKGK240 Studios have been the de facto pro cans in studios and radio stations the world over for a reason, they are comfortable, loud ruthlessly accurate* and detailed and have brilliant bass.
The up market sennheiser HD600 or HD 650 are also absolutely fantastic cans, but a lot more money than the AKGs.
*This has always been important to me as a muso and an engineer, a lot of people have speakers and cans that sound superficially good but are boosting loads of bass and treble (smiley face EQ). I much prefer to hear stuff as the band and engineer intended (LOL! Which is why my wife starts to shake if we go near a HiFi store, almost as much as she does when we go to a music store!!!)

Go for Sennheiser HD600 and have many years of musical enjoyment, while very cheap headphones will just hurt your ears. |

^ Sennheiser recently introduced a line of in ear headphones:
 I guarantee you they will not hurt your ears. BTW: Whether they hurt the ear or not depends on the volume, nothing else. The only problem is that cheap headphones don't isolate the ear from environmental sound well enough - so in order to hear the details in the music people are forced to crank up the volume. The in ear phones are really excellent in that regard - even professional musicians are using that technique on stage today. |

Indeed, there are big but very comfortable (you quickly forget it when you have it on your head). I'll not bring it in the train, not so much because of the look, but rather by fear to damage them or being attacked by hooligans wanting to stole it. On another hand, i'll wear them outdoor when in the country on holidays. Most important, it works like storm!!!! Extremely natural, great imaging, fast with punchy low and fine highs. ^ I might even buy them in the next few months ... currently I only have a cheap Medusa 5.1 headphone set which I use for online gaming. It's great as far as surround sound is concerned, but the audio quality sucks.

Indeed, this is really a great value (used in the best studios). A new product (cheaper: 100€) which is said to work great and would be a great solution for portable sources: Etymotic ER-6i

There's nothing below...it's the minimal walkman headphones. But i would not call it a good Hifi headphone.

Yes,I have a pair of Sennheisers,the type that plug into your ear canal and sonically they are excellent.They also allow you to listen at a lower volume setting meaning that you save on battery power... |
