BV, I've yet to hear Zoikhem. They are a relatively recent zeuhl/RIO outfit I think. I heard they are a little similar to Mexico's Nazca and UZ. Bleak and sparse, perhaps ? !

Yeah that picture really does catch the essense of what the band is truely about.

Yes, I would be more than interested in see some pictures. I love most of the artwork in the normal additions, so to see more would be a pleasure. Also is the T-shirt just the album cover on the front or have they gone for the extravagent? I have been tossing up making my own Boredoms shirt, I think I might do it sometime soon, I just have to choose some of the Art work I like. Anybody have some good ideas? Also love the idea of the random noises, though I could see this coming a problem during the middle of the night!

Tell me about it, paying through the nose that is. Other than the five big albums in their catalogue, all the other albums over hear cost silly ammounts. They are all imports from Japan, as I don't think they are marketed in Australia. I'm just lucky my store orders them in and this way I don't have to pay for shipping.

BV, you need to make a couple of Japanese penpals ! Most of their second-hand cds are around the fiver mark (not sure Oz currency against UK but bloody cheap)

They toured this year (as did ooioo) and yet again I missed them. 'Bollox' is the word I uttered I believe.

Last time I saw 'em was 2 years ago on Xmas Eve in Tokyo. Two songs, each in the 45 minute area. The 3 drummers on their circular kit and Eye-chan on electronics and conducting a 20-odd Japanese high school girl choir in uniform. Tried to keep my eyes on the band but, alas, 'twas impossible.

PS the T-shirt is white with a simple Boredoms/VCN logo in ultra-violet. Made for clubs as they are seriously into Trance

If you are talking about 500 Yen. Then that is amazing. That translates into something like $5 my money. So this is defintely something for me to think about Wink

I think "Bollox" is the word you are looking for. Though I think you will find the English spell it a little differently.

I would die to see them perform. I have a recording of a live gig they did. Downloaded it from who knows where. The folder on my computer was entitled DJ EYE. It is just one 35 min track of some amazing Avant-Psych, mixed with peculiar electronic ambience. Eye seems to have a little bit of an obsession with repeating oh oh eyh oh oh over and over again. I don't know if this was something played at your concert. I seriously have to be one my favourite tracks I have heard by them. I just looked up them on my other computer it was taken from live at the metro, Kyoto, Japan 3/25/2001

Yes Zoikhem certainly did sound quite interesting. This afternoon I was flicking through some French site listening a lot of French progressive artist is general. There are a fair few bands which got the RIO/Zeuhl tag. Though I think their genre's labeling is quite loose. So over the next coming days I might be asking a few more questions about some French bands.

Keep probin' BV !

I think I have that Kyouto concert. Got it from limewire I think. One long piece and very experimental ? If it's the same thing then definately no other musicians involved. Probably just Eye and his electronic gadgets. Have you seen Scanner or Akita Masami (Merzbow) or Aphex Twin live ? Even AMT's Cotton ! They look pricey but can create one helluva wall of sound ! (...says I who hasn't got the slightest what I'm goin' on about. Only recently tamed the Sinclair ZX81...)

I'm talking more like 1000 yen per cd. Can't work the maths but sounds cheap ! By the way BV. I'm as English as Fish an' Hips

Listenin' to the Hellebore record again. If any member of Tortoise gets to hear this they will jump from Chicago to an unknown planet off Betelguese in one tenth of a nanometre in 3 milliseconds (in old money)

The thing I don't like about these polls is: 1 who gives a sh*t ? 2 they are country specific an' 3 who gives a sh*t ?

I can play any Rush song. Makes me a better guitarist than Lifeson ?

I must say, Yukorin, you sound more English than Tony R!

Oooh, some of this mention of bands is interesting.

I l;istened to Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy. WAP94CDX. the other day and it's one of the hardest albums I've ever had to listen too, it's insane!  Apparently his ambient stuff is much easier to get into to.

Yup that would have to be the concert, very electronic and experimental. I like the electronic scene so this type of my music sits with me very well. I would have loved to be there, even without visuals there was one amazing sound and emotion coming from that recording. Nothing like playing it  in a dark room.

Yes I was not sure whether you were English or not, but you seemed to have close ties with the country. With me it depends who you ask as to my heritage.

I have seem some Merzbow and AMT footage (some great footage on archive.org, I have posted it here before). Have you seem Merzbow? Hat off to you if so. I don't think I could even comprehend the intensity of a concert like that. I know Wolf Eyes puts on an impressive show, in the wall of noise style. They were in Australia not long ago, but unforunately miss out, I only started liking the band a few weeks after they came. There is a split EP from the concert with an Australian noise band. I should be picking it up sometime soon, it is only limited to 1000 CD's. With Aphex Twin I need to have more of a listen to this band. One of my friends has some of their stuff on vinyl, and some very nice turntables. So it might not be long before I get myself a little more comfortable with the band. Supposedly they have some pretty trippy video clip, anyone seen them?

1000 yen is still very cheap, converts to about $10 Australian, which would equate to something like a 3.5 pound.

I'm listening to a track by Estradasphere called "The Dapper Bandits" and I think it's more Assaf's thing than Adam's.

Are you familiar with them?  I see they're in the archives.  If you are aware of them, where do you suggest I start album-wise with them?

Shock horror... but they vaguely remind me of Taal (on the one song I heard)!

Also worth a mention is Dave Murray's (former drummer of Estradasphere) new band The Deserts of Träun, which I believe is probably of a similar sound to Estradasphere.  I've not heard anything by them however.  They do have an album out though, called "George Arvanitas Pres. the Arti".

Anyone familiar with them?

Kombinat M (from Austria) are now here as is their only album Hybrid Beat (Cuneiform and now for only 4$ on Wayside music).

Too bad they only released one album.

I'll post about this in the collabs zone as well, but I'd like to throw it open:

Adding Fred Frith and Chris Cutler.

These are two of the most important RIO musicians, and it's not much of an exaggeration to say that without them the genre would not exist as we know it. Both have had interesting careers, including some solo work, and should be included in the archives.

Fred Frith:
Has appeared on well over 400 albums as musician, composer and improviser, sometimes all 3 at once. His solo work has increasingly gone more into contemporary avant garde, but the following albums should definitely be included:
  1. Guitar solos
  2. Gravity
  3. Speechless
  4. Cheap at Twice the Price
  5. Keep the Dog (live)

This is a highly selective discography, but everything in it is based on rock music.

Chris Cutler:
Has appeared on almost as many albums as Frith, mostly with other bands but has made 2 solo albums plus some collaborations. Suggested discography:
  1. Solo
  2. Twice Around The World
  3. Dust (With Thomas DiMuzio)
  4. Quake (With Thomas DiMuzio)
  5. Shark! (With Zeena Parkins)

Cutler/Frith

The two have worked extensively as an improvising duo, releasing 3 CDs to date. Should they get an entry in their own right, or be added to one or other's discgraphy, or both?

Your thoughts, please.

My knowledge of them is dwarved by yours, but I will say that I believe that due to each ones personal musical experience they do deserve a solo entry for each. I respect them both for what they have created and I think it is suitable to do it in thsi way.
Oh, and cheers to you for adding them Clap

And I also think you will be adding Massacre, right?

I added now the Spanish band suggested by Cesar Inca and approved by the team - October Equus:

I haven't done it yet - hopefully between now and Xmas I'll get round to it.

Yes, I will be adding Massacre soonish - in fact, I was just listening to Funny Valentine.
