For anybody interested:

Mastodon, a gerorgia based Prog-metal (well I think they are at least,) are releasing the album Blood Mountian on Sept. 12.  They put out the 1st single, Crystal Skull, today, and you can hear it on their website:

I happen to love this band, and I think that they're very promising young group of individuals.  For anyone looking to get into them if you like what you hear, I suggest picking up their latest release, Leviathan.

Any Thoughts?

I`m not sure if they are prog. They combine extreme metal with rock, that`s all. Drumming is outstanding though.

They are pretty prog IMO... Jazzy drumming, fast, but still stoner riffs, a nice overall complexity... throaty vocals.... interesting and cool!

Their music is quite complex ... and on a high artistic level. Surely they're not just combining two styles of simple music.Wink

They combine two styles of simple music in an unsimple way. If we add them we should add Gojira

Blood Mountain is definitely prog (don't ask), and Leviathan was at least borderline.

I'm borderline on whether or not they're prog. I can see arguments for either way right now, but I think once blood mountain comes out, all our minds will be made up for us. The new tracks sound very promising, and I plan to buy the new cd once it comes out.

Wow, I must say, I'm impressed with the new song! Any other song I've heard by them sounded like buzzing noise, but this is coherent, and I might venture as far as to say as progressive....(I still don't really like the vocals thoughEmbarrassed)

You should hear the song Hearts Alive... Very epic and progressive, hardly just "buzzing noise". Their other songs, being noisy, are still quite progressive, just imo Mastodon is the best band to make music Schuldiner-influenced music after his death.
