 Topic: Rickenbacker 4080/12

|
Hi, I heard about a double-neck guitar/bass (4-str. bass on top, 12 str. gtr. on bottom) called the Rickenbacker 4080/12 that was used by Rush's Geddy Lee and Genesis's Mike Rutherford. I was just wondering if anyone knew when these were used (specific songs would help, both Lee and Rutherford). Were they just used for playing live or were they used regurley in the studio or just for specific songs or what? Any information would help, thanks.

geddy; no.
geddy just got the thing and almost never used it. he was like the 3rd person to get one. jerk.

Geddy might have also used the doubleneck while recording, since he claimed that it really nice tone (from all the body wood).

The 4080 was used by Geddy Lee on the following songs:
1) The Necromancer
2) Xanadu
3) A passage to Bangcok
Geddy used a JetGlo 4080 12 and I believe the white one was a 4080 6

Geddy only used it on 3 songs studio and live, for as much as he did use it on the songs he did it was a waste. The last time the 4080 appeared live was during the Exit Stage Left tour in 1981. After that anytime they played those three songs they would be a shortened version cutting out Geddy's guitar part. The only exception was A Passage to Bancok where during his guitar part (Chords) he played a Bass line instead.
I can't comment on how much Rutherford used his but I will say that Geddy terribly underused that instrument.

I worded that sentence a bit weird, I meant that the guitars were mainly used live and not in the studio. He did seem to not use the 4080 very often and it would have been awesome to see Lee use it in more songs. If you watch any 70s Genesis video, you'll see Rutherford with the 4080/12 on essentially every song.

Here is a slideshow of my 1975 Ric 4080/6
Geddy had a Jetglo 4080/12 and a white 4080/6

In 2000 the wife won a meet & greet with Geddy on the day MFH was released. We got to sit in on a 90 minute radio interview & one of the first questions I asked Geddy is why did you give up the Ric for the Jazz. His reply was that the Jazz gives him a wide variety of sounds that he could not achieve on the Ric, that and he kept banging the headstock on everything on stage. He did say he was looking for either a Ric 4000 or 4002 (cant remember) I guess for his collection. I guess he still plays with the Rics but prefers the Jazz, IMHO he should have stayed with the Ric.

I do like his overall sound with the Ric when compared with the Jazz (his bass sound on Permanent Waves and Hemispheres are flawless).

Not sure if your aware but Geddy recorded most of Permanent Waves with his Jazz Bass, Hemispheres is 100% Ric.
Even Moving Pictures where Geddy was touring with the Ric, most if not all the songs were recorded on a Jazz Bass. Don't worry, it took me a long time to hear the difference and I own both a Ric and a Fender GL Jazz
I did have to add that Hemispheres is my favorite of them all.

Can't say I know much about Geddy's use of it, but from Genesis bootlegs and videos that I have seen and heard, it seems like Rutherford spent more time playing the twelve-string neck than the bass.

And Permanent Waves is my favorite of them all.   EDIT: Wasn't aware of the change in bass sound, they do sound similar, so that's why I often thought he used the Ric. I was also swayed that way because of live videos around the time where he used the Ric.
