Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums, and relatively new to progressive rock.  The bands/artists I currently listen to are: Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, Rush, Dream Theatre, Frank Zappa, and Genesis....I think that covers all of them.  In particular, I really enjoy King Crimson, Yes, and Gentle Giant.  If there are any groups that are similar to those, or you think I might possibly like based off of that, I would love to hear so that I might check them out.  Thanks!

Hi there. Van der Graaf Generator is missing on your "starting with prog" list. As many people say, try "Godbluff" first, and then go to "Pawn Hearts". You also should go for some Magma. There are many bands, some you'll like, some you'll hate, but it is always worthy to spend time trying to understand the beauty that music is. for new bands, try Godspeed you! Black Emperor, and perhaps "Carptree". and watch out for Teaflax, or you'll end up under a lot of messages about "Pure Reason Revolution" (Nice band). The Residents are a personal favourite, but their material is a bit weird, since they have a most unusual humor. "Comercial album" and "The Mole Show" are very interesting albums. Henry Cow, Art Bears, check them out. Good luck.

Your choices are amongst my favourites too.

I'd chack out Anglagard's Hybris (click)Focus' Hamburger Concerto, and Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra (think many Crimson fans might like Zarathustra). PFM's Per un Amico and L'Isola di Niente just cause I think they're great.  The Italian singer in Le Orme reminds me a bit of Jon Anderson.

As for Gentle Giant, Yezda Urfa has some Gentle Giant sounding stuff (check out the streaming mp3 at the link I offered).  I prefer Gentle Giant.

You might like Happy the Man.

Anyway, I expect someone will come up with a list of bands that were inspired by King Crimson, Yes, and Gentle Giant, as well as ones that share similar qualities.

Thanks to all of you for replying, I will look into the bands that you guys have mentioned. As well, cuncuna, thanks for reminding me of VDGG, i have listened to them, but they somehow slipped my mind when I posted my last message.
