It all depends on how seriously you take it. It's not based on levels, and one genre is not better than another (at least, not outside of my own head ). Although, with the ever increasing variety in prog, some kind of map is very useful for navigating these waters. Way back when (way, way back), I used to think it was all basically similar to Genesis and Yes. Now I know of vastly different kinds of bands, yet they all fit under this prog umbrella. Without some kind of guide, it would have been difficult to go from Pink Floyd to Magma, to PFM, to VDGG, to Porcupine Tree, etc.

However their are many bands, particularly in prog, that cover multipal genres, either throughout their discography or even on indavidual albums. This makes it near impossible to classify bands under a specific heading. My suggestion is take the genre's listed on this website as a rough guide to get the idea of the general sound of a band/artist, but dont stick to it religously.

Clap  and think that grouping those groups, that can't be pigeonholed into a specific sub-genre,  into Art-Rock was  a damn good idea.  Beats all those groups being thrown into symphonic as they were.. which left the symphonic team haveing to go through...group by group trying to figure out who was and was not. Some laughably not symphonic others borderline....
