RIO Drop-In Centre

Well... I'm not sure.

Some of it was quite cool and I quite liked Grandpa Simpson's vocals (want of a better style for him) on Part 1.  Some of it was a little... well, I'm not sure.  Some of it I liked, some I didn't.  The second part was much stronger in my opinion and the guitar bit at the end was not too bad.

Having said that, it wasn't really that crazy to my ears, it was actually quite mellow and not noisy at all.  I just feel as if some of it sounds like it was recorded in a garden shed in Osaka though.  The one beat seems to persevere througout the whole thing (both parts) and then there is this bit where it sounds like a cat crying, a child crying... lots of weird stuff and lots of chimes as well.

It didn't seem to have any coherence and seemed like a jam to me.  It may grow on me, but I don't know how much I'll play it.

Is this typical of Krautrock as a whole?

I'm not sure what this expression means (having a big say), but if it means what I think it does, I'd like to say: All our votes weigh the same. The only reason why I'm sometimes called team leader (or something similar) is that I was the first to join the chart on Mike's website and therefore I am so far the only person with the ability to add bands to the chart - Mike designed it like that. So I am leader in a bureaucratical sense only. Assaf and Chris know a lot more about RIO/avant-garde music than I do, and I think David's and my knowledge of RIO/avant is comparable...

Because of the posts here, I actually just put up "Gold and Green" for the first time and, wow -> cool stuff! My first taste of OOIOO probably won't be my last. It reminds me of Boredoms, but it has a little Zeuhl (and RIO/avant-weirdness in general) and noise thrown in the mix as well I think. Considering that Boredoms and Smegma will be added under RIO/Avant-Prog, I don't see a problem with adding OOIOO there as well. Anyway, I added them to the voting chart and I voted yes myself.

About a "(experimental) Japanese" subgenre on the website: The collaborator team recently had a heated debate about geographical subgenres. A lot of people think the subgenre "Italian Prog" should be lifted, because there are no big features that distinguish the Italian symphonic prog bands from their foreign counterparts. In short, many feel that subgenres based solely on geographic boundaries should not exist. (this excludes, of course , Krautrock - which was coined early on as a certain brand of experimental, sometimes very specifically German sounding music with a vivid music 'scene'; and the Canterbury Scene, where a signature sound was a created that was adopted by bands abroad as well).

I know I will be criticized for this, but yes I dig Merzbow's Noise. When listening to it at the right time, it can be relieving (I know how this sounds like, but you must take int account that for me, metal music calms me down, so you can understand what lies behind my weird spirit....)

Hey, I'm interested in noise as well. I just haven't got further than Smegma yet... well, except for the Smegma/Wolf Eyes album.

I don't have any Merzbow. I don't have the entire Wolf Eyes album - I couldn't find all the tracks on the web. But when I have money again I will consider buying an actual copy.

As much as I appreciate your generosity, please be easy on my harddisk and brain... they both can't handle all this new music. I am still trying to find my way through the Smegma discography. I also found (out) a lot of new stuff about them. Stay tuned for some interesting details (maybe tomorrow) and eventually the addition (somewhere in the coming few months definitely). I already started work on a bio... about a year ago I think (no, seriously... I've been waiting for this a long time).
