With the greatest respect I think this poll is pretty pointless, as so many of them are! Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, certainly in the early seventies had moments when they would momentarily sound the same. By the end of any track you could tell which band was which and the genre they fitted into. Deep Purple were hard rock, Uriah Heep were definitely Progressive Rock by virtue of the mood and tempo changes, and the more complex structure of their tracks.

Please don't get me wrong, I adore 'Child In Time' as a classic piece of rock history and often play it on my show, but, The  Magician's Birthday is much more progressive, not better, just more rooted in progressive rock.

I love both these bands but have voted Uriah Heep as they are on the whole more interesting and adventurous.

Uriah Heep for me! I loved this band and i like them still. DP are too much rock n roll band for me, UH had better material and songwriting.

Both bands are great. Heep with David Byron, Purple ever since especially with Steve Morse. There is no comparison,. but Purple seems to have more stamina.
GOD bless their good socks!

Uriah Heeps first album WAS a synthesis of Deep Purple/Vanilla Fudge that led to famous quote by a US critic that 'if this band make it I will shoot myself'. Must find out what happened to him.....

I think purple are the better band myself.

Both (Heep&Purple) are icons of the early age of "hard" rock to me. I value them both. Heep is behind in the poll, so I vote for them.
To be the one who seeks so I may find .. (Metallica)

1) This poll has to be a joke. Right?
2) People protesting how many universes separate the two bands' music must be joking, as well. No, the two bands are not carbon copies of each other, but they are both predominantly early 70s-based heavy rock bands with some greater or lesser "progressive" tendencies, featuring a heavy organ presence and 'operatic' male vocalists. Spare me the hand-wringing.
3) I think way too much is made of Heep's ostensible prog abilities. Three-quarters of their songs during their peak years are very basic, verging on meat-headed, and when they do try to venture into prog realms, they usually aren't up to the compositional task. Byron's voice is interesting, but ends up sounding more laughable than garndiose because the compositions can't stand up to it. Heep seems to me the definition of pretensiousness: a bar band trying to convince itself that it can play Bach.

I don't see any similarities between Byron and Rod Stewart.
From what I read about David Byron, I never saw Rod Stewart was mentioned as an inspiration for him.
David Byron was quite ambitious singer, I don't think he wanted to imitate anyone.

My vote is based on the first 6 Heep albums, but you gotta give Purple their props for what they've done and continue to do. I quite like the past couple of studio albums now that Morse is a permanent fixture in the group.

Where is the "both" option? There's no competition here. I love both bands alike.

Machine Head and Burn are hard to beat for Hard Rock.

Heep's Stealin' is a great song and a classic!

You must be joking Nakatira

                      DAVID BYRON                                                ROD STEWART

Now in the voice:

Rod Stewart has a poor range, very low and very raspy, makes Peter Gabriel sound smooth and clear, flat with very few variations and no drama..

David Byron had one of the highest voices ijn the market, he could reach the range of Jon Anderson easilly and was absolutely smooth totally dramatic an theatric very versatile, the prototipe of a Metal vocalist.

There's absolutely no connection between the two.

Iván

I prefer Deep Purple

Ritchie Blackmore is a guitar hero and Jon Lord an incredible organ player.

The MK II and III made great long live epic songs with classical arrangements !

I voted Purple. It is one of the three bands wiht which I started my music addiction (in 1970).
The other two were Santana and Led Zep.

Heep came a little later (1974) for me. I have to say that during the first six years of their career, they procuded really good music  but after that the kind of albumls they released was of no interest for me.

Purple, on the contrary, released several very good albums during their different Marks (as well as two or three crappy ones, I admit). Their commercial approach is also quite questionable (releasing an enourmous quantity of lives, compils etc (only equalled by Yes in this exercise) for the last fifteen years or so.
