I'm sick and tired of all this Rush-fanboyism. That's one of the reasons why I don't visit Prog Archives that much these days.

Queen is definitely Progressive to me. Even though they don't dabble in odd-time sigs, the type of music they had written and the musicianship they exhibited at a minimum makes them proto-Prog.

If any discussion about a band constitutes fanboyism then there's alot of it going on here at the archives.
BTW Cert, nice points you laid out. I disagree, but still an interesting read.

Just listen to what these bands (out of my head) created after 1978: Bacamarte/Ange/Twelfth Night/Ozric Tentacles/Edhels/Nemo ...
And some bands started as clones but managed to create an own sound like .. Rush, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree... to name a few.
To me their music doesn't sound regressive, it's (very) distinctive progressive music, not mainly based upon the Seventies prog! |
You havent read all my post Erik or you would not make the points you do.
I am saying that "Prog Rock" was a monicker associated with certain bands over a relatively short period of time. The term was invented to describe the type of music Yes,Genesis et al were playing specifically as a way of pidgeon-holing them.
My memory seems to recall that Art Rock was the big umberella genre that Prog Rock sat BENEATH,now this situation has been reversed...
That is why Marillion and IQ ETC who were heavily influenced by Genesis (amongst others)but came after the "golden era" were called Neo-Prog isnt it?

Fellow Rush die-hard Tony R, I have read your entire story in your post, I am only reacting on the last prhase about no progrock after 1978, it's also not meant personally because you quote something and there I react on, that's all.
Indeed, in the early Eighties neo-prog was the new mainly Genesis inspired prog rock movement, speerheaded by Marillion and followed by me from the very first moment in 1982, even Rush was second best at that moment for me  ...

I wasnae taking it personally my friend.
I am merely saying that Rush are Prog Rock because they were accepted as Prog Rock band between 1976 and 1979.Whether history decides that their credentials should be scrutinised and re-assessed doesnt alter the fact that they belong in that category.This is aimed at those that think Rush should be in Prog-Related that's all.To move Rush into Prog-related would be an historical innacuracy...

oh wow.. sure that poll has been done... would be interesting... 'rush fan' v 'DT fan'
hahha.. yeah... it's like the dilemma we Americans face every 4
years... both are evil and must have stakes driven through their
hearts.. but in the end... you must choose and you end up finding that
little something in one that that wins your vote. Rush for
Micky... at least I can listen to it and remember that before I started
shaving and hit puberty.. I did love this group...

I guess they are in title to be along with Genesis, ELP, Crimson, Yes, Floyd and Jethro Tull... but as I am not the biggest Rush fan I must say that if they get to that category, we must take in consideration all the crap the band has released! I mean from Presto till now...its pretty bad music if you ask me...and then again I theink that their golden years are good...but not in the same level as Genesis, Yes or King Crimson so name a few...
But then again, they have sold so much and influecned so many, that I guess they deserve it...

I have tried to appreciate Dream Theater but apart from some exciting moments on their DVD's (amazing interplay, sensational keyboard work) their music simply fails to keep my attention, for me it's a cascade of scale-acrobatics and it sounds too clinical too me. Rush since Presto also fails to keep my attention, that the only parallel ..

I find everyone bashing most of Rush's work after Presto. At least Roll
the Bones was brilliant. Don't let the bit of rap (which is
proffesionally written and skillfully executed) in the titletrack put
you off.
Edit: Fusing styles is progressive.
