I guess I'm talking about western, like the dylan/Early VDGG Peter Hamimill kind of guitar.

one that sounds nice or looks nice or both ?  (no, i'm not trying to be sarcastic).

just got an ovation shallow-bowl. looks are so-so, and sound is so-so (depending on who you talk to).

three things make me like it:
1. it was very inexpensive and in excellent condition.
2. it's acoustic-electric
3. the action is outstanding, feels like an electric.  can play bar-chords clear up the neck with minimum effort and perfect intonation.

I have always loved the typical sound of the Ovation but unfortunately it's too expensive for me Unhappy ...

If I were you I would tryto sell it, it's worth quite a bit. I highly recommend Maton Acoustic guitars, I have a Southern Cross Acoustic, number 174 of 291 and it is amazing, all hand made in Australia, Melbourne worth about $3000 though... But seriously though Mation Acoustics are the way to go, ask anyone. The Electric guitars they make really suck thoughUnhappy

Crafter make some pretty decent acoustics and electroacoustics for decent money. Cort and Garrison also have some pretty good reviews.

Best ones I've heard and tried recently have been Freshman but I think they're a UK brand and not sure how available they are worldwide.

Agony of decision. Am about to buy a 12 string electro-acoustic and will be weighing up a Cort against a Freshman.

Mind you compared to when I first started playing 30+ years ago it seems that even budget models these days are pretty consistent and playable

Norman guitars from Canada are, among those I have tried, the ones I prefer.
Nice quality/price ratio, too!
