I have a question to all you DT haters and lovers;
How many of you are actually musicians, or atleast amateur musicians?

I think the main problem (it's not a real problem Tongue) is that Dream Theater's fan-base is full of "fanboys" who know nothing about propper music. They do not really comprehend Dream Theater's complexity and genius, but they like them anyways because Petrucci plays guitars very fast. Also, the fan base also contains a few people who know stuff about music, and they can actually understand the music and like it for the right reasons, but those people are referred to as fanboys just because they like the same band as the stupid guys who don't know sh*t about music.

Also, many DT haters know nothing about music. I respect people who might not like DT for sensible reasons... But some people just don't like DT because they don't want to be considered "fanboys"... Or just use the classic argument "They are just w**kers boasting in their speed".

Well I would just like to say something vulgar for once after shutting up about this for a very long while of consistently annoying "DT haters" threads:

To all you who claim that DT are just w**kers showing off technique, You are stupid, you know nothing about music. Your mind is just way too small to truely comprehend the genius of DT. Try covering one of their songs before you open your mouth, or better yet, just shut your mouth for good.

So basically anyone who doesnt like DT is stupid.

Do you think that Albert Einstein would be spinning Dream Theater discs if he were still alive today?

One little known fact about Mr Einstein:

He Wasn't Much Of A Musician

Einstein would relax in his kitchen with his trusty violin, stubbornly trying to improvise something of a tune. When that didn't work, he'd have a crack at Prog Metal.

You obviously didn't actually read what I said.

did not say whoever dosen't like DT - you are stupid.
I said whoever claims that they are not artists and they just wank over their virtuoso abilities - you are stupid.

Excuse me but there is a difference.

And also - There are a few musicians such as J.S Bach, that I didn't like before I played a piece by him. I think, if I was not a musician I would have never been able to comprehend (or coming close to comprehension) the genius of J.S Bach.

Another Example - I would have never been able to understand the genius of T.S Eliot, because I am no poet, and I have yet to actually read a serious poetry book in my life.  Therefore I don't go out and say that T.S Eliot is full of bullsh*t and he just goes on blabbering about nothing using his "High Language" and indulging in it.

P.S,  by no means am I comparing DT to J.S Bach, or T.S Eliot. I don't think THAT much of them :P

How do you know that DT arent superior to TS Eliot if you,as you admit, have never read any of his work or that of any poet? Because someone tells you that Eliot is superior art?

It is all about opinion, but it is best to form your own which is what I have done based on listening to DT and comparing them to bands I like and also those I dislike.

Tony, you're my man....ClapThumbs Up

As to what The Lamb says: first of all, I don't think words like 'stupid' should be thrown around like that in a public forum (Mods, sorry if I'm stealing your job, but I can't keep quiet on this one..). Then, as I'm known - jokingly or otherwise - as one of the major DT bashers on PA, let me explain my point of view:
I am not a musician, and as such I would never dare to say that DT are showoffs, w****rs or anything like that. The only thing I can say is they commit what, to my eyes, is the greatest musical sin of all: they bore the hell out of me - and I own five albums of theirs. Is that enough?

Mmm you are sortof ignoring the fact that I never accused "people who don't like DT" as stupid. People who has them for sensible reasons (like Ghost Rider) have the right to do so.
All I said was I think that people who say DT are technical showoff are just... stupid. Not because they have bad taste, but because they choose to critisize in inappropriate ways things that are simply beyond their understanding.

Tony R, I don't know if DT are superior to T.S Eliot, and I think the comparison of the two is beyond absurd. I only know that  I would never critisize T.S Eliot (especially not in inappropriate ways), being a person whose knowledge of great poetry is close to nothing.

I'm with TheLamb on this one (except for the issue of calling people stupid Dead).

People who don't know anything about music should not comment on how other people make music.
I know nothing about painting, so of course I never comment on the technique of painters, even if I don't like their paintings.

However, I don't agree that people who comment on technique without proper knowledge are stupid. I kindly tell them to learn music theory and then make a statement.

Calling them stupid won't solve anything, Lamb. Wink

The idea that non-musicians shouldnt comment about musicianship is patently absurd.

You can learn to accurately critique any "art" without being able to practice those disciplines yourself.

If you have the intelligence of course....

Savant capabilities:

Music is another common savant ability. Many performers with autism have perfect pitch and also have a great memory for music. In some cases, a person can hear a classical piece once and play it back in its entirety.

My little son thinks your avvy of the two legged horse is hilarious! His father on the other hand thinks your post is!
Speaking as a musician with a grade 3 in musical theory from The Royal Schools of Music(signed by The Queen) I would say they are all excellent musicians.
Good day gentlemen.
