Creativity to make melodies , Although the skill of the guitarist does come into account for me, that is why I consider Steve Howe to be the best guitarist as he has a mixture of both.

I'm a guitar player, and let me tell you: anyone can build their skill and get better - and I'm not joking. However, not everyone is creative or can create melodies. For example: see Slayer.

If you can't make a good melody, then all your skill is worthless. That's why I like Joe Satriani so much! great playing and melodies.

Creativity in making melodies is important for a musician, or more specifically for a composer. Musicianship in that regard is good to have for a guitarist - after all, it's a definite boon for improvisation - but skill IS of primary concern. I don't know about the rest of you, but I would far rather listen to a highly skilled guitarist bringing life to a composed piece, than some fumbling beyond which can be discerned a creative melody.
The key question is what constitutes skill, and of course the answer is a frantic waving of the arms and the imploration, 'NOT SPEED!' Skill is the ability to execute a melody - whether a result of your own creativity or some other's - with a variation of sound and pace, with a texture appropriate to each note, which completes the emotion that otherwise can only be partially present in a well-conceived melody.

Both would be preferable, but I went for creativity. Not being a musician, technical skill for its own sake is just not for me.

Steve Hackett is a perfect example for this poll. He can create amazing melodies, but for some reason he has never learned how to bend properly.

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

Creativity. If you only can play solos, you're worth nothing in a band.

I disagree, sorry.. Btw which album of Vai makes you think like that? There is an album called the 7th song, full of melodic and ballad songs (still instrumental though) like For The Love Of God, Tender Surrender, Hands On Heart.. Do you think these songs aren't melodic? Big smile

Oh and I would say a combination is the best, but maybe the feeling is more important...Wink

I think you need to have both, but in order to play melodies, you have to have the skill to pull them of musically.

Both are preferable, but creativity over technical skill in the end.

without melodies, skill is nothing. Why do you suppose the majority of shredders like Rusty Cooley do little except make instructional DVDs? Because they suck at making actual MUSIC.

I would go with Creativity

Omar Rodriguez Lopez isn't exactly that good technically but i enjoy hearing him over the John Petrucci's and Joe Satriani.

But anyone who thinks Steve Vai isn't creative with his melodies should absolutely listen to his latest album and the song K'm Pee Du Wee in Particular
