Sounds like fun! What do you think of Zaar? I am not sure if I prefer them to Sotos yet (completely different sound really).

I haven't listened to that album yet. I'm simply getting too much music. The last few days I bought 10 CD's, one by each of the following bands/artists: Fantômas, Sigur Rós, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Erik Satie, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George Gershwin, Sonny Clark, Miles Davis and Zaar. Of those, I have only listened to Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Satie. Both very nice, although very different. Edited by Joren - July 15 2006 at 18:17 |

I need a copy of Rhaspody in Blue, as I always liked that in my youth, but never owned it. Is there an official Gershwin Orchestra version, or can you recommend a particular orchestra version?
I have the album before Bitches Brew and really like it and plan to get Bitches Brew at some point too. Sigur Rós I've only heard one track by and if you like laid back, ambient kind of music, you'll probably like them. Edited by Geck0 - July 15 2006 at 18:02 |

I have no idea. This is my first Gershwin CD, and I haven't even listened to it yet. I actually bought this CD because of Rhapsody In Blue (I heard it a while ago), even though it's not on this CD. It's a Gershwin CD so I thought I'd give it a try. It does contain "I Got Rhythm" though, which is a well-known jazz standard. I think I'll some day buy a CD with Rhapsody In Blue on it as well.
Get "In A Silent Way" as well, while you're at it. I personally like it better than BB, although I must say I have not yet listened to BB as much as I have listened to IASW.
I don't like laid back music per se, but I enjoy some music that could be described as such. Edited by Joren - July 15 2006 at 18:14 |

Joren what style does "Penguin Cafe Orchestra" play? I noticed they were being considered by the RIO/avant team for additon. Over the last year I have forever been seeing their albums in my local second hand store. Each time I have been intreged by their covers but have never brought anything as I never knew what they sounded like.

They play very strange music. Not in a "RIO way" though. It's very minimalistic, repetitive and dreamy. I like it. Kinda "proggy", but not really rock. I voted to include them in Prog Related at most. The bio on allmusic.com describes their music very strikingly: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joren, I think I meant "In A Silent Way". I do have that album already. With just two tracks on though, it's going to take a while to climb up my last.fm rankings (not that it matters of course)!
I also like John Coltrane by the way, but don't have anything by him. I have access to a lot of my brother's CDs, so I can borrow his Coltrane! Anyone familiar with Polar Bear? My brother has an album of theirs and has seen them live. They're jazz, but with avant-garde tendencies. I've not listened to them enough to decide whether they should be here or not, but I rather like them! My brother heard some of Sotos - Platypus (the quieter, jazzy parts - he left halfway through the album) and said it reminded him of Polar Bear. Just thought I'd bring them up. |

Sorry, I misread your post. You wrote "the album before Bitches Brew" (my italics), but I thought you meant Bitches Brew. Coltrane is awesome. I don't know Polar Bear and Sotos, but I have heard about the latter a few times around here. |

You have to listen to Gov't Mule (and guests) version "Afro Blue", it's great! It's three electric guitar players, bass, saxophone and drums. Excellent stuff (I've heard two version of it by them actually).
Coltrane's version of "Our Favorite Things" is superb, yet still reminds me of The Sound of Music (grrr!). |

My copy of Rhapsody in Blue (bought in UK by the way) is played by Slovak Philarmonic Orchestra (Bratislava), under conduct of Richard Hayman, and Kathryn Selby on Piano - this is absolutely great 1988 recording. It's released by NAXOS, think you can find it in UK.

I am assuming we are talking about Polar Bear from UK? I'm pretty sure there are two bands by the same name, though I have not heard any material by the other one (I cannot remember where they are from maybe USA).
I don't own any Polar Bear unforunately but I been able the listen to there latest album "Held on the Tips of Fingers" which came out over the last few years. From what I can remember it sounded quite good, I'm not sure about the comparision to Sotos. As I have not listened to Polar Bear enough to form a clear idea about their overall sound. Is this the CD your brother has? |

I believe it is, I shall play it later, as I've put it to one side for future play (just haven't gotten around to doing so), along with a John Coltrane album.
Yes, the UK Polar Bear. The leader of this band is also in a punk type band... let me look them up! http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/jazz/reviews/polarbear_held.shtml http://www.onefinalnote.com/features/2004/polar-bear/ http://www.babellabel.co.uk/The%20Babel%20Label-2552.htm - Held on the Tips of Fingers http://www.babellabel.co.uk/The%20Babel%20Label-2444.htm - Dim Lit Apparently they're what is known as post-jazz. Even if they're not suitable for the archives, I still think you guys will be interested in them. |

Thanks James I will have a look at those links soon and hopeful be able to have a few samples again of their music.
Also I have been meaning to ask you something Joren. I know the band Smegma are hopefully being added to the database which I am very happy about, I love their album "Glamour Girl 1941". I got sent this album just a little while back "Smegma - Schrammel Oi!" and I was wondering whether this is the same band or not as it is an abrupt changing in styles if it is? |

Not a problem, Adam. The latter two links have some MP3s available for download, so check them out when you can.

Hmm I don't know "Afro Blue"... I don't have a problem with "My Favorite Things". (Maybe because... I have never seen The Sound Of Music. ) |

Yeah I've heard "Schrammel Oi" as well... Assaf owns it. It definitely is a different band. If you search for the cover on google you'll soon find out. They're a bunch of skins/oi! punks from Germany I believe. Edited by Joren - July 15 2006 at 19:00 |

I'm not sure which album Afro Blue is on, but it's not written by Coltrane. I forget who wrote it. It's an amazing tune though, so check it out!
My Favorite Things was of course written by Rogers and Hammerstein for The Sound of Music, which is a film I loathe! Coltrane's version is delightful however. |

*phew* This comes as good news, I really was hoping the fantastic band who recorded "Glamour Girl 1941" had not fallen to these depths. By the way, what did you think of the band? (the Avant-jazz one) |

I came across a similar problem earlier.
I was on last.fm and saw there was a free tune available by Wobbler. I played the track and was astounded! It was awful awful drum 'n' bass kind of stuff (but ambient, kind of like Portishead). I thought: surely this isn't the same band that brought out Hinterland? I looked at the profile and thankfully, it wasn't. It was some dude on a laptop. The name of the track sounded Norwegian too and that also threw me! I love the name Smegma, haha. Look it up in the dictionary Edited by Geck0 - July 15 2006 at 19:08 |

Oh dear, yes I am well awear of the definition behind that word and also found it amusing that someone would decide to call a band by this name. Great band neverless and obviously with a sense of humour! |
