I actually was refering to this - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=25421&PN=4
But I am still waiting. I hope it calms down.
Anyway, let us not deviate from the subject of this thread.
Apologies about the bands I've mentioned and that were already discussed here, I completely forgot. Next time, I'll go over the thread before asking.
Did anyone look at the link I posted in the previous page from rate your music?
There are some bands there I am not familiar with. But I did see DAAU there, and after listening carefully to 3 albums of their, I voted yes on their inclusion to PA.

I have had rather a long look over that list in rate your music and things like this are just another remunder there are so many more new bands I know nothing about. I will writed down a little list of the band just in the top 100 that have caught me by surprise. I really start to get a big shaky the further the list goes on.

- La Societe Des Timides a La Parade Des Oiseaux
- Kourgane
- Julverne
- Jose Luis Fernandez Ledesma Q & Margarita Botello
- Jono El Grande
- Jan Kuijken
- Il Berlione
- Hardscore
- Golden Avant Garde
- Fukkeduk
- Ex Vitae
- Ensemble Nimbus
- Eider Stellaire
- Die Knödel
- Culto Sin Nombre
- Nazca
- News from Babel
- Pak
- Panzerpappa
- Pochakaite Malko
- Rouge ciel
- Six Cylindres En V
- Spaltklang

Wow looks like there are more on that list I don' know than I know. Overall this is a very impressive list.

Over the next few days I will see what I can find out about some of these bands and post it up here if people are interested?

Here's a bit of what I know about a few of these...

- Larval

Fusionish band sometimes associated with the downtown NYC jazz scene. A couple albums on Cuneiform I think; I have Obedience which is pretty good, but inessential.

- La Societe Des Timides a La Parade Des Oiseaux

Otherwise known as "La STPO," has been getting good reviews from a variety of places recently (I guess there was a recent reissue?) but I haven't heard them yet. Definitely on my list.

- Jose Luis Fernandez Ledesma Q & Margarita Botello

Fernandez Ledesma is a brilliant Mexican symphonic prog talent, one of the few modern symph composers that still interests me. Sol Central is his collaboration with his wife Botello, and it's more on the avant-rock end of things. It's also absolutely brilliant and my favorite album of his. Just gorgeous stuff, a must for anyone who wishes avant-prog was just a bit less "ugly."

- Il Berlione

Japanese avantish/fusionish group, more complex and less aggressive than Happy Family, and less complex and more aggressive than Tipographica. Their first, self-titled, album is great; the second one drifts uncomfortable close to crappy lite-fusion for my tastes (they could use a better saxophonist for sure).

- Ensemble Nimbus

Samla-esque all-instrumental group, a little less wacky than Samla but with the same jaunty kind of feel. My favorite album is their first (they have three), but unfortunately that one's on APM and thus long out of print.

- Culto Sin Nombre

Mexican chamber-rockish group, I believe has some relation to Decibel but I forget the nature of it exactly.

- Nazca

Probably the best-known Mexican chamber-rock group, ahead of Decibel and Culto Sin Nombre. Two studio albums and a live album that are all sort of like a poor man's Univers Zero. Nothing as good or compelling as that band, but if you like UZ you'll probably enjoy these guys.

- News from Babel

Post-Art Bears group with Dagmar, Chris Cutler and Lindsay Cooper. Also Zeena Parkins I think! These guys have been on my want list for the longest time, need to hear their stuff.

- Pak

New York (I think) "brutal prog" group. Think Hella, Lightning Bolt, etc...

- Pochakaite Malko

Not really an avant-rock group, more of a symphonic band with some zeuhl traces. Seriously bombastic in the style of ELP. Not really my kind of thing. Two albums, I've only heard the first.

- Volapük

Very complex, chamberish group with some albums on Cuneiform. If you like Tipographica or Blast, you'll like these guys (they're maybe a step down from those groups in terms of pure compositional knottiness). I only have Polyglot but it's very, very good.

- Yang

Frederic l'Epee's (guitarist for Shylock and Philharmonie) newest group. Haven't heard, but is reportedly heavier and more clearly rock-oriented than Philharmonie.

Hope some of that helps! Of all these, Jose Luis Fernandez Ledesma's Sol Central would get my highest recommendation.

Thanks for that, I have been slowly been making my way through trying to find some information on those artist and that was a big help. Some of them sounded farmilar but I couldn't realy remember. From some of your descriptions I am definately going to have to looking into a few more of them. Also on your recommendation I will definately spend some time trying to track down 'Jose Luis Fernandez Ledesma's Sol Central'

Here is a little information I found about one of the bands.

L'Ensemble Rayé

home page, with samples L'Ensemble Raye

From the sample this band seems to be a bit of a mixed, in both sound and quality.

There are numerous sound sample on their home page which is above. Folk influence are abundant mainly present via acoustic measures, think of the influences present in Alamaailman Vasarat thought dumb the intensity down ten fold. Not really my style, amusing for a little while but then can become quite testing. But check them out for yourselves.

So I was having another look through the stock in my store and there has been a new 2nd Hand item coming into stock and I am wondering if anybody knows anything about the band.

The band is and this is how my store describe them:

AFRIRAMPO "Explosive girl duo from Osaka, with ties to Boredoms & Acid Mothers Temple."

The mention of the formentioned bands drew my interest. They have a MySpace page which I am planning to check out when I get back from work.

If anybody can recommend or adivse me to steer clear of them I would find it much appreciated.

Just to mention - I listened to Secret Chiefs 3 "Book of Horizons" and quite liked it. IMO it is original, extremely diverse and various avant-garde album. Then I suddenly noticed it is listed here under Progressive metal label. This is completely wrong. I mean couple of short periods of idiotic "unhuman" vocals and several metal chords do not make album "metal", it's gotta be full of idiotic vocals and noisy chrods to be metal. On the same merits one could brand Discus as "pop" and exclude it from PA on this basis.
Must be corrected IMO, what do you, guys, think of it?

I've yet to hear them, but they're linked to Trey Spruance who owns Mimicry Records and he's obviously linked with Mr. Bungle, Fantomas and even Sir Millard Mulch, who are all RIO/Avant-Prog type bands.  Therefore I'd say the metal label is incorrect.  I'd have to hear them though to make a better judgement.

I agree with Eugene on this. I also think oif them as a band that plays eclectic types of music, which metal is only one of them. They experiment with seceral sounds and types of music and cannot be limited to one form. Thereore, I think Avant is the most suitable label.
The problem now, is to take them away from the Prog-Metal Team.

Just a bit to add on News From Babel: the band was Chris Cutler (drums/lyrics); Lindsay Cooper (reeds, keyboards, music); Zeena Parkins (harp, accordion); Dagmar (vocals). They were augmented by a variety of guest musicians and vocalists, including Bill Gilonis on guitar and bass, Phil Minton and Sally Potter. On their second album Robert Wyatt is the main vocalist, with Dagmar only appearing on one or two tracks. The two LPs were released on a single CD a few years ago, and this is due for remastering and reissue by ReR later this year.

News From Babel don't quite match up to Art Bears for inventiveness and intensity but are still pretty much essential in any RIO collection. The second album (Letters Home) is the one I prefer.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Robert Wyatt, Gloria Gloom

Sounds interesting Chris, especially if it that second album has Robert Wyatt on!  I shall look out for that when it's remastered.

So much stuff to check out has been listed, I don't even know where to begin!

I spent about an hour today listening to samples of all the artists on Cuneiform records. 90% of them would fit right here in this thread! Check it out guys, I was digging most of what I heard:

Well today has been a somewhat successful day inregards to my musical adventures. Meet up with my friend today and I was introduced to yet again another fantastic CD. Also he was kind enough to pick up a Boredoms CD for me while he was up in Sydney.

Korekyojin - Isotope

I find this CD to along the lines of Keiji Haino - New Rap. A little less noisy, and very focused on rythum work. I'm really enjoying this and I'm thinking RP is going to love this one if you don't already have it. There is a fantastic lineup to the CD and it is a live recording in 2004.

Kido Natsuki (guitar) - Bondage Fruit
Nasuno Mitsuru (bass guitar) - Altered States
Yoshida Tatsuya (drums) - Ruins

The other band I have discovered over the last week was 'Gatto Marte - Danae', the italian RIO/avant-prog band. I don't know if many people know there music? It is mainly based aruond classical structures and at times I find sound it a little like After Crying. Probably because of the extensive string sections. From first reactions this sounds quite good, I was just wondering what other people think of this band. Not to the extreme side of Avant-garde but still enough to keep me pleased. I will have to give it a few more listens before making any set opinions.

Oh yes, I have Isotope and LOVE it! Fantastic buy! Really great angular, chattery, and thrashy guitar playing, thundering bass and of course Yoshida's drums.

At least half the groups on Cuneiform struck me, but there was a fantastic song by the group called "Claudia Quintet", as well as some great Henry Cow wanna-bees (Like "Blast"). So much stuff to check out, I don't even know which interest me most yet, I'll have to futhur listen to quite a few - leading into some purchases. I'm sure it'll turn out nicely. Thumbs Up

Did they release an album on Lizard Records??? I heard only couple of songs by them, and it got me very curious about the band - but either they are very new or very obscure - I failed to find any information about the band.

Yes it does appear the album in discussion was released on Lizard Records. There is very little information on the Lizard Records web page which is translated poorly into english.

They are reasonably newish band, that album is from 1997. But this is their homepage which I though might be of interest to everybody, where you can listen to some sound samples.

You can give Afrirampo a listen but i didn't enjoy tem much. More like a simple rock band IMO. Though they've good reviews and maybe you'll be able to enjoy them more.

About that list
Fukkeduk has the violin player from Cro-Magnon and was produced by Nick Didkovsky from Doctor Nerve.

Rouge Ciel are a canadian band which earned many comparisons to Miriodor.

I only have their "...Tot Licht!" album. I think it's alright, but I don't like it so much; I find it a bit boring.

Some news from me:

Last Wednesday I went to Rotterdam. In the local record store I found two interesting CD's (second hand): Fantômas' "The Director's Cut" for only € 6,50, and Zaar's only album for € 5,- ! I had only heard some snippets from Zaar, but I decided to buy the CD anyway, because of its low price.

That night I went to John Zorn and Acoustic Masada with a friend (more specifically: a female friend - yes, they really exist: women who like avant-garde music! Tongue). It was an amazing concert. Of course I already knew what John Zorn was capable of, but he still managed to surprise me. Some of his playing was absolutely stunning! Joey Baron (drums) was also very impressive. He even gave a few headbutts a la Zidane (no kidding). LOL The only minor point was that the concert was so short: only one hour and 20 minutes. But hey, I'm not complaining... Amazing show! Clap
