STEVE HILLAGE — Green

Review by greenback
SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Neo-Prog Specialist

4 stars This is the first HILLAGE album were Miquette Giraudy really demonstrate talent for techno keyboards. Hard to believe those excellent keyboards are played by a woman. This album was surely a good reference of inspiration for OZRIC TENTACLES, especially the keyboards. It is not surprising that Miquette Giraudy and Steve HILLAGE work together these years in a techno ambient group named system 7 (system 777 in USA). The sound is so space here that even the guitar is sometimes sequenced and has full of frequencies filter changes effects! I find this record quite structured, and the drums + bass do a very good job. Just hear the guitar sound on "Palm Trees": absolutely amazing! It reminds me just slightly Steve HACKETT's solos on "Spectral Mornings" and more the "Listen" solo on "Magic is a Child" (NEKTAR). This record is one of his best.

DEEP PURPLE — Made In Japan
Review by sunsson

GENIOS!

I'd be interested in other's impressions on the appropriateness of this review.  This individual became a member, recorded this as his only review the same day, and never came back to the site.  By his own admission he only listened to the album four times, does not appear to know much else about the band, and his only substantive comments are that he doesn't think Hodgeson is a very good piano player and he didn't find the lyrics very complex.  It doesn't seem to me could have had much of a grasp of the rating system, offers no specific examples of why/what he found the keyboards and lyrics not to his liking, and his only comment about any specific track is to call it "interesting".

SUPERTRAMP — Crime of the Century

Review by getinvolved2006 (Gareth Brazier)

2 stars After reading the reviews of this album I felt compelled to rush out and buy a copy, as I felt that it would fill a whole in my expanding prog collection. From the reviews I wasn't expecting pure prog rock, but a more gentle and simple style of music. What I wasn't expecting, however, was boredom.

After listening to this album four times, I cannot rouse any interest in it at all. It is by no means terrible, but after a year of listening to the greats such as Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull and King Crimson, I found the music on offer here so simple and unchallenging. Much of the music is piano driven, yet I feel Roger Hodgson is at best an adequate piano player.

Many of the songs here seem based around the repetitive playing of keyboard or piano chords, which are simply layered upon one another to create the illusion of a complex song. The lyrics are unchallenging and uninteresting and many of the tracks seem deviod of direction or structure.

The only track on this album worthy of any real mention is Dreamer, which at least has a fairly interesting sound. However, this song is typical of the entire album as it simply consists of layers of bog-standard keyboard chords repeated over and over.

Well i'm not sure i agree with you...

the fact that the reviewer does not like 'Crime of the century' is quite sad, but he explain why quite well, imo. he listened to it 4 times only - because he doesnt like it. still he could have an opinion about it.

I feel that the problem is - maby he is too purist, and expect that every prog/art rock album should sound like yes/genesis, and be as complicate as their albums. Imo, this could be happen to the younger among us, who didnt listened to that stuff in more-or-less the 70's-80's. in the 70's there where a lot of good music, not only complicated progressive rock: art rock, excellent songs, etc etc.

But those who discovered this just now expecting that everything would be such complicated and virtouso playing... ok thats what i wanted to say (i hope the idea is quite clear, sorry for the english)

If you ask me, I don't think this review is inappropiate, even if I don't agree with the reviewer. He explains his reasons, and he's right when he talks about the repetitive keyboard chords, but that's the trademark feature of the band's style. If he likes it or not is a matter of taste, and ratings often depend on the taste of the reviewer, as they're always subjective. The fact that he only listened to the album four times considering that he doesn't like the album is not unusual, in fact some other reviewers seem to need even less listens (Is Sean Trane around here?? ) I think 4 listens is a number enough to have an opinion.

I don't really see anything inappropriate here. Four listens means that he gave it an honest try. He did give it two stars, not one. I also don't think more detail is necessary. He conveyed what it was that he found disappointing.

Don't look now but it seems the same troll as yesterday is back on the vulgar review rampage again, this time as Tony_R

The reviews of the DT hating, Tony R imposter are being totally deleted right?

He's at it again more than ever today. It really bugs me how someone would have so much hate to do something like this. UnhappyThumbs Down

Good. My only fear is that this person will keep making new accounts and continue doing the same thing. I hope everything works out.
