There's
really no proof that the drugs did anything at all to him.
Schizophrenia and psychosis rates are not notably higher in users of
psychoactive drugs than in the population at large.

Finally his family can rest in peace as no one will be trying bother them to get Syd to record something he wasn't able to do for 35 years.
Likewise for Syd, as I am sure he was equally harrassed.
Forget the drugs, they only hurried the situation. This was a person who was tortured mentally and probably wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of years with Floyd without the drugs.
Was he a genius? I don't know. I do know that this label is too often applied to someone who dies young, or burns out early.
Syd, I hope wherever you are, you are Resting In Peace.

The drugs were a mere catalyst, they hurried it. To be honest they were probably good in a way-they gave his tortured mind an escape from reality. I think he existed on another level of human existence, where he had trouble communicating with those not on that level.

^ Some people are not just meant for this world, it seems... Yet they are the ones that touch our hearts the most.
RIP, Syd Barrett.

^Yes, Syd touches my heart still, I can still feel his existense in this world. It may sound silly, but it's true. I think it's the way that I identify with him-it's strange indeed.

A true pioneer, who's legacy will continue on. I am grateful for his impact on my, and other lives. Syd, your suffering is finally over. (Deep bow)

To Syd:
Thank you for changing the way people look at music. That honor is given to so few people in the history of the world, and at least one person in this world puts you up on that pedestal as well.
You'll be missed, by all.

How ironical, just after the release of the Pink Floyd DVD Pulse, it's announced that Syd Barrett has passed away! In the mid-Seventies Pink Floyd became progrock millionaires while Syd's mental state (schizophrenia, badly influenced by heavy hard drugs abuse) went downwards, he decided to turn into a kind of recluse, helped by his mother who died a few years ago.
I learned about Syd his music while I was a huge Pink Floyd 73-80 fan, it was at the home of a friend who was very much into The Sixties. After listening to Arnold Layne I was mesmerized by his innovative guitar work, distinctive vocals and eccentric lyrics. I still love Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, Interstellar Overdrive and especially Astronomy Domine, how sad Syd didn't get the opportunity to blossom more than a few years ![Cry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif) .....

It is ironic to me that just last week I decided to create a home made CD compilation of classic psychedelic music from the 60's. And of course it had to include Syd era Pink Floyd. I had not listened to these tracks in many years. I scanned through several of the old cuts, and decided to use the track "Paint Box." Again not hearing this in many years I couldn't believe how brilliant this track was. It stirred great emotion and is still a very exciting listen. It really is one of the great English psychedelic music classics. I revisited all of the early Floyd singles, and some of the BBC sessions, and realized what an impact Syd Barrett has made on not only early British psychedelia, but also as a pioneer of progressive rock. His "Astronomy Domine" alone is a major proto-prog track, and still one of my Pink Floyd favorites. If it wasn't for Syd, would we have ever experienced the prog sub-genre called psychedelic prog and/or progressive space music? His influence on both psychedelic pop and progressive rock is obviously overwhelming. May the brilliant light of this crazy diamond shine forever. Thank You Syd. You will not be forgotten.

Roger Barrett in 2001..taken from some UK tabloid story.
Whilst everything that happened to him with his breakdown was so sad, it did appear that he pulled himself back to some level of reality and a limited interaction with society. That takes real guts.
Today is a sad day indeed.

He was a true innovator in psychedelic rock and early proto-prog. Sad that he is now gone. Regards to his family and friends.
