It's a shame a World Cup finishes with penalty kicks ... AND that Italy is the World champion, because they didn't deserved it ...
France deserved to win because they put more balls ...

Anyway, congratulations, Italy !!

Clap

A refereeing can`t be excellent, first of all because of that Malouda`s dive which Elizondo deliverated as a penalty kick (less than minute 10), so early in the match, that mistake could have changed the direction of the match.

Stop being sooo deffensive ....

In the other hand, im agree with you both, this was an average World Cup, this final match was a clear example of it, sadly we have to wait other 4 years LOL

Indeed, this World Cup was littered with bad tackles, yellow and reds cards, very boring games and lots of 0-0 draws and low scoring games.  There were a few highlights, but I switched off after England, Argentina and Brasil were out, as I had no desire to watch the remaining teams.

Very disappointing.

First, congrats to Italy Clap

I was divided but after Zidane's headbutt I preferred Italy (but no saints were playing in either sides, certainly).

Let's wait South Africa 2010... generally when the host country has few "dreams" of winning the competition is average to good. If not, then Brazil 2014, when I'll have the opportunity to receive you all here and make the best team of prog supporters ever! Wink

Surely, it will be the best team. But whom shall we support?

Well, as the quarterer man used to say: "let's go per parts!" Big smile

There's only one country already classified for WC 2014, ahem... Tongue

 Truest words all thread.

The group stages were great, but the knockouts were average.

Apparently Materazzi informed Zidane that Dream Theater were crap and that Liquid Tension Experiment were the better band

Yes, they should make the whole thing one big group stage. All 32 teams have to play the other 31.

The last good World Cup was 1986 IMO.
Lots of goals, great games and Maradona at his best.
Most WC's since have been overly defensive with fairly negative tactics.

Perhaps with the Asian and Afican teams improving so much and the fact that most of the players in the tournament play in such few leagues (mainly European) that games will only be settled by the odd goal?
The gap between the worst and best is getting smaller.

I'd have to concur that this was arguably the worst World Cup I've ever seen- seen it since about 1994 and seen footage of earlier ones and there have been so few great moments in the 2006 one it's hardly been worthwhile. Only Germany was consistently excellent in the whole tournament, imo. Although Italy were not the finest team there, they deserved to win yesterday after Zidane completely disgraced himself irredeemably. A bizarre final, in all honesty, but perhaps the only fitting one to such a let down of a tournament....

It's still over a month till the Premiership kicks off.

How do we cope without football now? Confused

I just read that in Brazil some lip-readers told in the programm Globo that Matarazi has insulted Zidane his sister by calling her a whore.. I don't know or this is true but Zidane will tell within a few days what made him reacting so badly, he already revealed that it were very mean words...

I cannot leave this thread without mentioning this (don't worry BebieM, no bad words about Germany Wink ): we have accused the Portuguese of behaving badly (for sure they did) but Italy made some very nasty fauls (intimidating elbowing and kicking at heels in the very first part of the game) and Matarazi has succeeded to provoke Zidane to react badly, after the injuries of Vierra and Henry, the red cart of Zidane was too much for France ... for me they were the real heroes of the Germany 2006 finale Clap !

I prefer Italian progrock rather than Italian football ...

Agreed. Italian antics were not very good, but overall I never really enjoyed Italian football. Far too defensive for my liking.
