Hi Axe Victim

I bought a dodgy Focus DVD a few weeks back. Cant even remember what its actually called, but its part of a series that includes concert performances from may acts including Caravan, Hawkwind, Gillan among others. oh yes and Asia

The Focus DVD is mainly a documentary, punctuated with live clips of them playing some great songs rather badly IMHO. They seemed to have a tendancy to play everything at least twice as fast live. I hate it when bands do that. Its as though they were deliberately setting out to ruin their own music.

Anyway, 'Giant on the box' Gentle Giant by any chance?? I dont know that much about them, I have one track on a compilation which I do quite like. Whats the DVD like???

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Echolyn has a DVD coming out in September.... looks good. If you're a GG fan, you may enjoy Echolyn. They wear their GG influences on their sleeves, but still make incredible music that's all there own. IMO.

There's a trailer for the DVD.

Check it out: http://www.echolyn.com/news.php

I'm currently enjoying Pink Floyd at Pompaii, the recently released directors cut.

The between song sections are pure Spinal Tap!

The Magma dvd is amazing, it includes the complete trilogy, ending with
Mekhanik Destruktiv Kommandoh.

Glass Hammer "Lex Live" : excellent! This one is the one I watch most
often.

Nektar Live @ Nearfest : excellent!

IQ "Subterranea" : excellent!

Curved air "Masters from the vault" : too short (30 minutes)... but it does
include the track Vivaldi.

VDGG Live with Godbluff (the new version) : essential.

Strawbs "Live at Chiswick" : don't buy. I like Strawbs a lot but the dvd is
not good at all.

I love the Pompeii video.. I wish they would have just shown more band performance and less fake lava running thru the fake village.  I also love the DSOTM documentary....the acoustic performance of Breathe by David Gilmour is just amazing...Go to Top of Page

I love ELP's Masters From the Vaults dvd.. I know its not official.. but its so entertaining to watch. They evidently spliced a couple of shows together.. so one minute your watching Greg sing in one shirt.. then immediately without a blip...he's in a completely different shirt. There's one point where it seems that he's messed up the lines to Knife Edge.. when really its just the splicing was going on.. cause he sings one verse in one shirt.. then the same verse in another shirt...

It is actually a great dvd tho. I understand the official ELP dvd will have these shows on it also. I can't wait to see how they improve it...Go to Top of Page

THIS IS ELP

A few days I bought three that are in my DVD player very often:

  1. Focus...Live in America: Good document of Thys Van Leer working with a different line of members before he had the stroke that doesn't let him play flute.
  2. Rush in Rio: Incredible DVD, great concert and what a fanatism of brazilian fans, some thank God others cry, I never saw something similar in any prog' concert.
  3. Steve Hackett...Somewhere in South America: Good DVD of his tour in Argentina, not as great as Tokyo Tapes but still amazing.

Giant on the Box is a real joy, they're so tight, and a real surprise; who'd have though that a quarter century after they disbanded they'd have a dvd finally coming out...lucky us!

I see they have discovered (?) a filmed concert of the Moodie Blues live in Paris 1970 or 71 and scheduled for DVD soon.
