What I mean with brazil financing the world cup is simple:
Everybody loves to watch Brazil ... so if they are out of the cup, less tickets will be sold.

Not just 1978, Atkingani; 1934 was a bit iffy, too.......(The Bullfrog is alleged to have picked some of the refs for Italy's games....

What I mean with unfair is tthis the trained professionals referees usually try to be more in favour of teams that really finance the world cup (Brasil). Also, seems like the 2 teams that give this event the most money (Germany and Brasil) were put in extremely easy groups for the 1st round while you can put USA with 3 terrible teams and Argentina with difficult ones as well.
Although sometimes they are incompetent at well such as the many times they interfered with Argentina in the fault that should have been a clear penalty against Holland and the time the referee called hand contact on an attacking dutch when he stopped the ball with the chest.
They should put 2 referees or something because the amount of unfairness that occurs with only 1 is overwhelming.
btw, as an Argentinian, I was not disappointed at Argentina vs Holland that much. Surely, this was not an important match at all and they didn't want to lose players with yellow cards nor injuries. Unfortunately, our great Burdisso injured himself though. Messi did not have such a shining moment as in the previous match, but he was still a great and agile player and the midfield/offense played great with Riquelme and Tevez's tactics.
Ok, with Mexico defeated badly against us, we'll already most likely have to deal with Germany. That is really going to be a tough match for sure, especially with unfair referees and lots of cheering for Germany.

Well, well, well... same old song! Never heard that Brasil finance the World Cup (we're not that rich!), but I know the only Cup that was really paid for: 1978!

To be truthful (and only looking at the standings) this looks quite boring. Only Ghana's win over the Czechs was a surprise so far, and to a lesser extent, Croatia not winning against Japan, which cost them their qualification for next round. The rest went almost as expected.
Notice how Japan and Korea are not getting anywhere this year? 4 years ago, these two organizing countrie both managed to at 1/4 finals (one of them even to semifinal), due to financial interests and had lots of referree calls going for them , in order to get them through.....

I'm surprised
Look at the talent they have playing in their leagues: Pele, Rodney Marsh, Franz Beckenbower, Carlos Alberto (1970 mexico..what a GOAL!), Eusebio...how could they loose?

Well, the USA is gone, but I doubt anyone is truly surprised. They may have talent, but in their three games in the World Cup they sure looked outplayed and outmatched. Only in the first half of their match against Italy did they play up to the level of expectations that many people had for them. The quality of football in the U.S. is still nowhere near the level of that played in Europe or South America. Clearly they were ranked too high (#5 in the world - are you serious??).

When I refer to fear I talk about psychology, all latin teams are so afraid of Brazil that they loose the game before playing. Europe teams dedicate to defence and as you know with players as Ronaldinho Kaka or Juniho, closed defences are a candy for Brazil.
African teams have nothing to loose, they are already happy reaching the next fase, and those are the most danf¿gerous and frightening teams for Brazil.
Are strong, fast and never get tired, if they loose they loose nothing, so they are not scared plus it's no secret that Be¿razil suiffers more when attacked and this African teams live to attack.
The Olympic Team defeated by Nigeria (in 1996) was not the "best". According to IOC rules you only can use 3 players that played previously in World Cups, hence the 1996 Olympic Team was a bunch of new kids with 3 experienced guys. But those kids even losing the Olympics and later the 1998 Cup formed the base for the 2002 team and partially for the present team.
I know the rules of the Oloimpic Games Guigo, but Brazil went to pick the cup, that was so obnvious that they didn't stayed 24 hours to receive the bronze medal.
In terms of World Cups we played 4 times against African teams (Zaire, Algeria, Morroco, Cameroun) and won all without even suffer a goal. But Ghana may surprise, why not? This is football, Africans are progressing, one hail to the newcomers! But even being defeated Brazil (just like Argentina, Germany & Italy) will remain in the top of the table.
In World Cups there are always a coulpe of surprises, but thoise surprises can win a game against Brazil or Germany, but they won't win the cup, those are won by the bigteams with history.
About African progress in football, are y0ou sure? I believe they never had a worst Cup than this one, they were getting better, but seems that progress never completely reach, the great football is still in South America and Europe.
It's obvious that modern football is not that romantic game we liked to watch and that sometimes have disappeared since the 90s but still is and certainly will be a great pleasure to see the 4 Bigs playing and also some other teams like Netherlands, England, Spain, many Latin Americans and probably some African teams.
Football is now a business, the romanticism is lost for ever, but watching the advances in tactics is great.

I don't think so, Brazilians worst fear are African teams, South Amnericans have such a complex of inferiority that start loosing the game, teams from Europe use defensive tacticts agaibnst Brazil and that's great for players that can break any defence.
But Africans feel they reached what they wanted and have nothing to loose, remember the Olimpic games when Brazil sent their best team with Romario and Bebeto and an African team sent them home.
I believe Brazil may not win Ghana.
