Spain did well turning that game around but I'm starting to think they have a few defensive weaknesses though, too many to win the cup anyway...

What's wrong with the coaches:
Holland: no killer forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar, back to 4-4-2 system after a lead ..
Spain: new sensation Fabregas (so much pace and creativity) started as a substitute
against Tunesia
France: no Giuly in the final 22 players and Trezeguet was not even used as a
substitute when France couldn't score against Togo
Brasil: chaotic play, lack of confidence
England: so defensive and sub-dued, where is their famous spirit?
Any other examples? Edited by erik neuteboom - June 19 2006 at 17:45 |

hahah... for once I left the prog at home and listened to sports talk radio today.. Eric Casiliias on ESPN radio made the case...probably a valid one as to why 'football' will never catch on here. Amoung many points he made was probably a valid one in retrospect..and one I've noticed in watching games over the last few days. Here in this country we thought we had the art of the 'flop' perfected in basketball... basketball has nothing on 'football' for shear overdramatics of some of the 'flops' we've seen. Bad enough...but made worse by refs being quick on the draw with the cards. As a wise man once said...sometimes a foul...is just a foul. Have in mind that red card Pope drew in the Italian match.. slo-mo replays... all ball then contact. You'd have thought the Italian player had been shot. Anyway his closing statement was interesting... the skills on display are amazing... but the product on the field is substandard. Of course he went on and on about the 0-0 and 1-0 games.. but that is obviously a product of the collective ADD this country has. It's like baseball in a way... a great pitchers duel is just as exciting as a steriod juiced home-run derby. It's all in the strategy. Probably a typical american view.. but figured I throw it out there. I've really enjoyed the matches myself. |

Normally bad decisions from referees mean that they will be "frozen" till the end of the Cup and probably for other FIFA contests but I never saw a decision being cancelled.
What happens is that FIFA officials may suspend a player based in what they saw in the TV but eventually was not caught by the referee or the linesmen. It didn't happen until now in this Cup but it happened in previous World Cups.

I really hope this is true, and not just one of those urban myths recycled.....
"1. A thief who stole a woman’s World Cup ticket was arrested after taking her place in the stadium — and finding himself sitting next to her husband. Police said the ticket was in a handbag that was snatched from the woman as she made her way to Sunday’s game between Brazil and Australia." from: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,29650-2233213,00.html |

Tomorrow it's Holland against Argentina but at this moment there are some heated discussions on
the Dutch tv and in the Dutch sports papers because of the Dutch football team,
IN MY OPINION WE ARE MOVING MORE AND MORE FROM ORANGE
TOWARDS
...RED, THE DANGEROUS ZONE SO RED ALERT:
1) we depend too much on the brilliant actions of our keeper Vander
Sar and the forwards Van Persie and Robben
2) the marking by our defenders is bad, especially Van Bronkhorst
3) the midfield lack 'ball-conquerors' and 'chasers', Sneijder is too much a
light-weight
4) the communication between defense, midfield and forwards is bad
5) some players are on the wrong position like Cocu and Van Bommel
My advise:
1) Cocu in the central defense
2) Van Der Vaart replaces Sneijder and Van Bommel plays more in a fore-
checking role
3) Van Bronkhorst should be replaced
4) Holland should play less defensive and less cautious, don't let
Riguelme control the game and chase up defenders like Heinze and
Ayala!
So please, Marco Van Basten, be less obstinate and please Johan Cruijff, stop flooding the defense with compliments, it's poor until now!
LET'S PLAY LIKE HOLLAND SHOULD: GO AND CONQUER THE BALL, like in 74 and 88! Edited by erik neuteboom - June 20 2006 at 06:07 |

I expect Ecuador to win today. They played well till now.A first place in group A wouldn't be unjustified.Plus a more easy match in the last 16 if Sweden have the second place.

Those are valid points in regards to the general american sports audience and here is another one - winning, or lack there of. America does not like to suck in anything and having a history of losing not only means that people will change the channel whenever they see a soccer match on t.v., but also keeps MLS stadiums empty. Over MLS short history several teams have already gone belly-up. Though the quality of Men's soccer has improved dramatically over the last 15 years in this country, it still isn't enough for the majority of sports fans to care. I believe success in the World Cup will have some impact, but not enough to cause my local team, the Kansas City Wizards, to ever be confused with Real Madrid (in terms of ticket sales and revenue). Until the USA truly becomes a dominant force on the global stage then America's interest will continue to be minimal; which is a shame because soccer has actually become my favorite sport. It just takes time. The NFL was around for nearly 40 years, when in the late 1950's it finally began to find a large audience. The NBA didn't really take off until the 80's when Magic and Bird dominated the game. I agree that the overdramatic flops are a turnoff, but that shouldn't be a detriment to what is a very challenging and exhausting game to play (and fun game to watch). hi hi we're losing..but it was somewhat predictable...our two best strikers are resting and some are avoiding the second yellow card..As you can see our replacements are not as good as the others...
If Ecuador looses it doesn't matter...
