Topic: Kansas Survey Posted: June 18 2006 at 16:24 |
Iīm just curious to know how Kansas fans tick, so here are three questions.
1 What are your top three bands? (Besides Kansas)
2 Are you a Yes fan? I ask this because I have noticed that not many Yes fans like Kansas and vice versa (I could be proved wrong here)
3 What are your thoughts on Proto Kaw? Do you think they are more progressive than Kansas?
I want to hear from Kansas fanatics like myself!

If I may, I'd just like to poke my head in and ask this:
If your top three bands in Q1 are all Prog, what are you top three non-Prog bands?

1 What are your top three bands? (Besides Kansas) KC, VDGG & Pink floyd
2 Are you a Yes fan? I ask this because I have noticed that not many Yes fans like Kansas and vice versa (I could be proved wrong here) I think Yes made some great albums yes !
3 What are your thoughts on Proto Kaw? Do you think they are more progressive than Kansas? yes. I have the "early recordings of Kansas" and IMO every track there (execpt Belexes) is pure symphonic prog while every Kansas album has few rock songs. Even in Leftoverture which I believe to be a masterpiece there are some songs that are just rock (What's on my mind, questions of my childhood).

I agree Omri, "Whatīs on my mind" reminds me of Paul Rogers and Bad Company.

Question #1 is often changing (excepting Rush), so this is just which groups are my favorites right now.
1 - Rush, Joe Satriani, The Moody Blues
2 - Yes = Very Yes. So, yes.
3 - I'm not totally sure, I've only heard a few songs as of now.

If we're talking ones listed as prog here and over their whole body of work then probably Marillion, Arjen Anthony Lucassen, Pink Floyd.
Bands in this century - Salem Hill, Proto-Kaw, Super Furry Animals, Oysterhead.
Non-prog? Violent Femmes, Concrete Blonde, Red Hot Chili Peppers.
2 Are you a Yes fan?
Yes, but not to the point of obsession like some people here.
3 What are your thoughts on Proto Kaw? Do you think they are more progressive than Kansas?
I think they are very different from Kansas. I'm looking forward to seeing them live in September.
I want to hear from Kansas fanatics like myself!Well, you have. |

I have been listening to a lot of Enchant lately. They sound a lot like Kansas and the vocalist sounds incredibly like Steve Walsh. Great band!!

Prefab Sprout, Squarepusher and XTC - at least today, but those are always at least in my top 10.
I'm genuinely curious about the answer to that part of it, though - my
purpose is not to mock it. Because it seems unlikely to me that you can
be into Kansas without liking Rock of various shades quite a bit, and I
think the answers to that would give some insight into whether that's a
baseless assumption or not. And two out of your three fit my theory.

Yes it is quite interesting, for example I donīt like Mars Volta, maybe someone who likes more pop (or smart pop) would be more inclined to like bands like The Mars Volta?

^It's possible. I don't really have a grasp on TMV fans as awhole. I
know that in my circle fo friends that is semi-true, but not a given.
Mostly, though, I find that those of my friends and acquaintances who really dig
TMV are the ones who slate Neo, Prog Metal and AOR Metal almost
completely, but love Prog Prog (yes, I'm now using that term).

1 - early Pentangle, Return to Forever, Gong....but I'm a fan of all things, love Roy Acuff, Hank Williams and the Carter Family....love West African blues, Afro-Cuban jazz, Japanese pop.....Dvorak and Rachmaninoff.....The Who, Stones and Beatles....The Beastie Boys, Funkadelic, Isaac Hayes, Motown....all things have their time.
2 - Absolutely....but only until Going for the One....Tormato and Drama aren't bad, but...
3 - Kansas' first three LPs, including the ProtoKaw stuff, are OK....but far from first or even second tier prog rock. Highly derivative but sort of unique for an American band.

I will approach the question as of what i liked leading up to Kansas in the 70's and that will go to Teaflexs questions as well
1. Top three were ELP,Genesis and Jethro Tull
2. Yes is in my top 5
3. Proto-Kaw is great but approach the music more loosely as in improv than Kansas did. They also have more a jazz element as the Keyboard players favorite is Brian Auger and the Sax/flute player John Bolton grew up with big bands. It sounds similar because the main songwriter for both bands writes it. They are killer live.
4. To answer Teaflex Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa and The Who. Deep Purple was close in there as well.

I am a Yes fan they are in my top ten , my issue with them is I think Jon Anderson lacks depth in his vocals and Yes don`t rise to the agression in their music enough for my liking . (I much prefer classic Kansas to classic Yes)
3 What are your thoughts on Proto Kaw? Do you think they are more progressive than Kansas?
I prefer Kansas to Proto Kaw (probably Steve Walsh and Phil Ehart) that said I like Proto Kaw.
