I voted Led Zep, although both bands are in the top 5 of my all time favorites.

Deep Purple, even though I won all of Zeps and albums and most DP's 60s-70s output, Ian Gillan's voice is simply better than robert plant and has more emotion to it.  Plant seems detached from the music and when he is emtional it becomes maudlin and uinspired

Led Zeppelin, of course.

By the way, how come they're not classified as prog related by this site? When I read the description of the Prog Related category, I wonder why Zep is nowhere near to be found in the list of prog related artists. Their catalogue even encompasses a handful of songs which could easily be classified as folk prog or art rock, not just prog related.

Led Zeppelin didn't consider themselves a hard rock or heavy metal (yes, some call them that Confused) band. They saw themselves as unique, and as I listen through their albums, I'm bound to agree. There's no way Zep was too mainstream to be included on this site in the prog related category. Either they need to be inducted immediately, or the description of the prog related category must be re-written.

Have a listen to them and think about. You will find it makes sense.

This is a joke ... Deep Purple is without a doubt a great rockin' band but Led Zeppelin are the masters of classic-rock. I don't think anyone rocks as well as Led Zeppelin and their compositional skills and virtuosism rivals the best prog bands (Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd)

I enjoy them both. And again I don't see the point in comparing Zep and Purple. They're musically quite different.

Where's GR at to tell all us Zeppelin voters why we're wrong?

Led Zeppelin by a large margin even though I like quite a bit of Deep Purple.

Zep by a country mile, since they were generally interesting. Purple got boring as soon as they dropped the Psych aspects of their sound and just became a chuggin' Blues band who happened to have some talent as players and performers.

Yes, Zep is way more interesting and mostly more adventureous, but both are great.

They were better at playing hard blues rock than psyche though.

Fair enough, but that's like being better at playing dodgeball than soccer.

Liked the early proggy Purps and the later boogie era, but the band's post-'74 stuff is by the numbers hard rock.

Love every Zep record....but don't put 'em on very often.
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

I thought it to be a rather apt analogy.
