Have we heard from micky since the match ended? I had this wonderful mental picture of him, up & down, shouting at the ref, back & forth to the fridge........but you should be proud! The US found their focus & aggression & were a bit unlucky.......So what's micky's summing up?

USA outplayed Italy in the first half and Italy outplayed the USA in the second.  If not for a lucky break the Italians would have held the USA scoreless.  The USA did play better today than they did against the Czech Republic, and they did it with only 9 guys on the field.  Not bad.

By the way, congrats to Portugal!  They made it to the second round for the first time since 1966!

But I don't see them progressing farther than thatWink Maybe the Q finals, but that's it.

Not bad for a country that only qualified for the WC 4 times.

On the US, I feel like that the team has a good chance now in beating Ghana because of the suspensions of Asmamoah and that other guy whose name I forgot.

I am just back from my late shift, saw some flashes of USA-Italy, 3 men send away and USA succeeded to keep the 1-1 in their pocket, congratulations, that's the way I like the USA fighting Wink !
Cheers, Micky and thanks for your ELP DVD review!

I was a happy camper at the outcome... we're still alive...if barely.  Italy can beat the Czech republic but us beating Ghana... a tall order... but look how much chance you all gave us against Italy hahaha. We're alive, which after that first game... is gravy at this point.

btw... you're mental picture....dead on... I about hit the ceiling when it looked like we took the lead (was the correct call obviously though) and spilled yet another beer.  It was pretty rowdy at the micky household this afternoon... now we're ready for pt. 2. tonight.  Becks is rooting for the hometown Hurricanes... me.... nah... The Oilers.  Rooting for Edmonton but not looking forward to sleeping on the couch if they win.  Oh well hahaha... I'll snuggle with my Keith Emerson blow up doll I guess. Wink

I think USA has a good chance from the way that we executed the wingers against Italy. But however, you never know, if Baros and Koller are fit for the Czechs, then Italy might not be able to win.

Not sure what game you guys were watching... Italia played bad, but so did USA.  I cannot see either team getting very far.

Oh and all those red cards were justified and none of them were ball before leg... (except for the first one of course)

I didn't see the match, as I lost all interest in football a long time ago. However, I think Italy should have withdrawn from the Cup after the wave of scandal sweeping across the Italian football world (I think some of you at least will have seen or heard comments on the whole story). Football used to be fun when I was younger - now it's just money, cheap publicity and violence.Dead

Thanks Italy-USA,we had our first referee who exagerated and ruined the game.USA's second goal was perfectly valid (as the player shot directly to the gate, not passed to the "offside partner";policy states that as correct maneuver).Plus the red cards for USA that went wild and aberant (Pope especially).

Disapprove

No Ricochet, although I would have been pleased with an USA win, you could clearly see that there was an USA forward player in the line of the shot off side, he blocked the sight of the keeper so in my opinion no doubt about an off side case!

No, it was not valid at all. He was in front of the goalkeeper and the keeper couldn't have predicted if he'd touch the ball or not, therefore a clear offside.

But the US players' red cards were very harsh decisions (at least the second one!!) from the referee and he also missed an obvious penalty (Italy defender handballed). Italy were lucky to get the draw, in my opinion the US would've deserved a win.

Overall a very dramatic and exciting match.

I don't suppose  USA  or ITALY will qualify for the "fair play" award at the end of the tournament after last night's "battle" - the ref was good he did his job and held firm through some disgraceful fouls (ouch!!Ouch). How do the Police expect the crowd to stay calm when they behave like that?? ENGLAND had better watch out too - they've even had to keep some yellow card players in the hotel for tuesday's game against SWEDEN in case they're "naughty" and can't resist fouling and get banned from playing!

It might be just a question of interpretation......apart from the elbow to the head incident, I didn't see it as a particularly dirty or violent game........the 2nd of the group games anyway will be more intense than the 1st, especially for the teams that lost or drew first time around.......

if the fouling gets any worse they'll need these......!!!!LOL

Picture: Air Ambulance hovering.   Picture: Paramedic bending over. Picture: emergency-entrance.

...sliding in and chopping a man's legs from under him seems the norm these days, T & T were doing it to Sweden and England.  i thought the player was supposed to go for the ball.......the refs are right to be strict.
