Looks like this is another band I am going to be putting down on the toget list Smile

I was also wondering what people could tell me about the band ÉTRON FOU LELOUBLAN. From the material I have read on RIO they seem to have been one of the five bands to partake in the first RIO concert in England, hence an important contributor to the movement. There seems to little mention about them and there are few reviews on the site. I was just wondering if people thought these chaps; are worth the listen? What albums you would recommed? What their sound is like?

cheers

Out there music Big smile Insane, in a good way. You have saxophones releasing sounds frantically, drums that are all over the place, and then they switch to something a bit more coherent in structure. I find it hard to describe, but maybe as Lise wrote in their bio, Samla and Aksak Maboul would be a good reference point.
I myself was wondering whether to purchase their entire discography album by album or buy 43 Songs (3 CD) which has all their releases.

EFL (for short) were like a French version of Beefheart's Magic Band, only more focussed on jazz than blues. Sadly little of their work is in print these days - there's a 3 CD set that collects all their material together, but it messes around with the original running order and the sound quality isn't great (ReR staff actually persuaded me not to buy it). I used to have a couple of their albums, long since vanished, but if you ever come across a vinyl copy of Les Trois Fous Perdegagnent ... or Poumons Gonfles with the initials CG on the label it's mine and please PM me. Les Trois Fous... was my favourite and seems to be generally thought of as their best.

Guigou Chevenier still has some stuff available, but I've never heard any of it. You can also hear them backing Fred Frith on half of his Speechless album.

Thanks for that Chris, I wasn't sure whether it is worth spending all that money on that 3 cd release - 43 songs.

Thanks for the infortamtion Avestin and Syzygy, much appreciated.

Looks like it is not going to an easy plight tracking down their material Cry but I guess that is half the fun Smile. From your descriptions and the likened bands I think there music is going to be a treat.

43 Songs is out of print but is a nice way of getting all the band's studio output all in one go. I got a used copy for $11 (!) so I can't complain. Unfortunately the liner notes are totally nonexistent.

I believe Musea has recently reissued all of EFL's studio albums. I have the reissue of Les Sillons de la Terre, which is probably the best intro to the band (though the debut Batelages is my overall favorite). It sounds like it's been remastered - sound is a bit clearer and cleaner than the version on 43 Songs. These new reissues should all be in print, as they were just pressed within the past two years or so I believe.

Managed to have a bit of a listen to Zaars' new album! Am adoring them already Smile. From first impressions I can very much see the likeliness between the two bands. Somewhat figures after realising Michael Hazera and Yan Hazera are present in both bands.

Thanks Brandon, that is good to know.
I think I will go for the option of getting these reissued albums rather than 43 songs (which I found in a store, but costs a little bit more than 11$ LOL).

I have the last EFL album, and I am certainly looking forward to getting more. Also of interest to EFL and related bands is Debile Menthol, whose first album I just received a few days ago, wonderful stuff.

They are  a French (I think) RIO band, similar in style to EFL. I think their albums may only be available on vinyl, not 100% sure though. It's on the RecRec label, so you can expect good things.

They're Swiss I believe.

Both Debile Menthol albums are available on CD in the 2-CD set Emile a la Campagne (the first album is Emile au Jardin Patrologique and the second is Battre Campagne - hence the name of the twofer). I quite like the first album, kind of wacky fun a la EFL and Samla. The second album is a bit more experimental and, in my mind at least, takes it a bit too far and is less successful. Still, a nice double CD set if you like this kind of weirdness.

OopsEmbarrassed, I really thought they were French, but them being Swiss would make sense. I should've done my research.

For those interested in Debile Menthol it may be worth you while to check out L'Ensemble Rayé. Well at least their first two albums.

After Debile Menthol disbanded in 1985 Jean-Vincent Huguenin and Cedric Vuille decided to head off in a different direction froming the group L'Ensemble Rayé. Their deubt album Même en Hiver/Comme un Pinson Dans L'Eau consisted of two sides, with each side of the disc devoted to compositions and arrangements by one of the pair. I personaly felt this gave them the opportunity the express themselves more clearly muscially than they were able to in the more band orientated environment.

Their second Album continued in vain of the sound of the first album with their style of RIO-flavored avant-rock and European folk-jazz.

I would not call any of their music overly ground breaking, but worth effort if you are interested in the former bands.

Beyond these two albums I have little knowledge and would be interested to see if their RIO influences have carried through their career?

I'm stuck on which Univers Zero albums to buy. I'm looking into Ceux Du Dehors, Uzed, Rhythmix and Implosion. They all sound fantastic, but I can't get all of them. Help please.

I'd get Ceux Du Dehors first, it's generally (and IMO correctly) regarded as their masterpiece. Heresie is also a good early release if you see it. Following that, Implosion, Uzed and Rhythmix in that order - oh, and to hear the reformed UZ at their best pick up a copy of Live, it's an absolute masterpiece!

What do people here know of BEGNAGRAD ?

Seyo added this band from Yugoslavia and they have two releases listed here:
Begnagrad 1982
Tastare (Theoldwones) 1992 (recorded in 1976)

Only their s/t has reviews (one by Seyo) and he praises them.
I was wondering what others think of them?

I love 'em. Really fun, vibrant and surprisingly listenable.

Sounds like I really need to be a-checkin' out EFL.
